It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Manama. The capital of Bahrain. It is the smallest Arab country in the Persian Gulf. Bahrain’s population is only 1.5 million of people. It’s a cozy place for a short vacation. There is no metro, no trams, no trolleybuses. The country is so compact that 25 bus routes are the entire public transport of the country. And it’s quite enough to move across the country.

The Sheraton Hotel building was the tallest in the country when it opened in 1981. It also had the largest pool. And in 1983, the hotel was also recognized as the most computerized. However, since that moment, Manama has changed a lot.
The Grand Mosque, the modern Juffair district, the World Trade Center, as well as malls, water parks and museums have transformed the city’s landscape. Now, hotels of unusual shapes on artificial islands are no longer surprising. And the business district stands out for its special beauty and brevity.
The World Trade Center is a symbol of the country. It is unique. It has three wind generators in the building. When it’s windy, they are able to provide up to 15% of the total energy consumed by the building.
A part of modern Bahrain, as in some other Arab countries, is being built on artificial islands. The most remarkable piece of paradise in Manama is Reef Island. The modern design of streets, houses, restaurants, walking areas will emphasize beauty and splendor.

Industry 4.0 will transform work, from big factories to mom and pop shops

Many hear the term Industry 4.0 and envision vast wind farms with digitallyconnected machinery doing complex computations. And it is that, potentially. But there is another layer to 4.0 much closer to humans. It is about the interplay among workers, data, sensor technology and robots improving productivity from large factories to small businesses.

“With industry 4.0, we’re putting realtime data acquisition on the factory floor,” said Dr. Samer Aljishi (pictured), president of BFG International.

An industrial firm based in Bahrain, BFG manufactures architectural components such as facades and building envelopes. Lately, it has been using “internet of things” connected devices, sensors, cameras and operatormeasurement systems to optimize worker productivity and product quality. The business is experiencing how realtime optimization can alter work like nothing that’s come before, he said.

Aljishi spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the AWS Summit event in Bahrain. They discussed the technologies heralding industry 4.0, as well as what is lacking in the market for workplace robotics and data analytics. ( Disclosure below.)

Meet the new boss — it’s a computer
All of the devices that collect data — image sensors, cameras, etc. — can suggest actions for improved productivity, Aljishi said.

“The computer will actually see that the particular operator has done something in a different way, it resulted in an improvement, it in itself can go and change that operating procedure.”

The technologies that enable industry 4.0, particularly robots, could go a lot further than they have thus far, Aljishi said. But it’s a work in progress.

“We’re discovering that the robots aren’t very connected,” he said. “The programming of the robots doesn’t enable you to develop them or to connect them or to implement industry 4.0 on them.”

Specifically, we need advances in robot programming languages in order to finetune them for work, something Microsoft Corp. appears to have a head start in according to Aljishi. “The technology’s developing so quickly that I think a lot of these challenges will disappear in a couple of years.”

There is tremendous potential to extend industry 4.0 to medium and small businesses, he believes. Those that rely on human knowhow to produce limited series or parts can essentially box that knowhow. “And you’ll be able to transport it anywhere in the world and be able to localize or become international very quickly.”

Smokey Nagata’s Top Secret V12 Twin Turbo Toyota Supra! What a great experience getting the chance to shoot this piece of automotive history. The car was debuted originally at Tokyo Auto Salon in 2007. Originally Smokey was tired of waiting for Toyota to announce a new supra variant, so he built this as a tribute to a “new supra” design.

Smokey chose to go with a V12 engine from the Toyota Century and add twin turbos and custom forged internals to achieve around 1000hp to the wheels. He achieved this using dual HKS Fcon’s to manage the engine, one for each bank. The goal for the car was to achieve a 400 km/h (249 mph). We grew up watching in disbelief many of Smokey’s feats and general care free attitude testing these amazing machines on open public roads. In Italy, the car did 358 km/h (222.6) mph, just short of Smokey’s 400 km/h goal. He still crushed his previous records.
