The Art of Edvard Munch
How does the artist Edvard Munch create such beauty, insight, understanding, and experience given the difficult emotional nature of what he is painting? This video attempts to give insight into these and other aspects of Munch’s work through a look at one representative painting.

Curator Nicholas Cullinan introduces Tate Modern’s Edvard Munch exhibition, and explains how the artist’s fascination with new technologies influenced his paintings
Few modern artists are better known and yet less understood than Edvard Munch. He is often seen as a 19thcentury Symbolist painter but this exhibition shows how he engaged with modernity and was inspired by the everyday life outside of his studio such as street scenes and incidents reported in the media.
He was also influenced by the technological developments in cinema and photography at the time, referenced by his use of prominent foregrounds and strong diagonals. This technique creates the illusion of figures walking towards the viewer, a trick seen in many of Munch’s most innovative work.
Underpinning Munch’s work is his preoccupation with psychological themes, exploring states of anxiety, isolation and fear states which, as this exhibition shows, Munch continued to explore right up to the end of his life.

Edvard Munch biography: This video discusses the life and times of the Norwegian expressionist artist Edvard Munch. Death, love and angst are prominent themes he explored through out his life. The famous artist Edvard Munch was born in Loten in Norway, but lost his mother and sister at a young age.
Edvard Munch is perhaps most famous for his paintings, The Scream, Death in the Sick Room, but his series of paintings, The Frieze of Life contains many remarkable paintings such as the Dance of Life. Munch suffered from bouts of mental illness and alcoholism, both issues are often reflected in his work. He also did a series of paintings for Oslo University, in Norway and for the Freia Chocolate Factory also in Oslo. The latter years of his life were spent in his estate at Ekely, Norway painting many self portraits which explored the effects of old age. Edvard Munch died in 1944 at the age of 80.
This video is designed for students and those wanting an introduction into art history.
