Wales Road Trip: Getting to Snowdonia from London

If you are based in London it can be very tempting to fly around the European continent on your weekends with airfares being so competitive. One of my favourite trips from London, however, was much closer to home! Wales is arguably the UK’s most underrated destination and a brilliant escape from the bustle of city life. While Cardiff and the Welsh Coast are probably the most popular destinations I highly suggest exploring some of the regions gorgeous natural outdoor landscapes in Snowdonia National Park.

How to get to Snowdonia

There are three options to get from South-East England to Wales.

Driving from London to Snowdonia

Snowdonia is a convenient 4-hour drive from London making it the perfect weekend getaway. I used Enterprise Rent-A-Car from St Pancras London because this was the cheapest option at the date of booking. A small 4 door car was sufficient for the road and weather conditions.

Flying from London to Wales

If you are flying into Wales you will arrive in the capital. Snowdonia is only a 2.5-hour drive from Cardiff, so I highly recommend hiring a car to make the most of your time in Wales.

Catching a bus to North Wales from London

There are National Express Coaches that leave from London Paddington and Victoria Coach Station that will take you to Cardiff Central, from there you can catch a local train to Bangor Train Station. From there it’ll be another two buses (5C, 53, or LX4 and then 67, C67, LX or 67) to Llanberis and then to Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia National Park. This is very time consuming

London to Cardiff by Train

Direct services by Great Western Railway and Virgin Trains will take you to North Wales from most parts of Britain. Make sure to hop off at Bangor Train Station. You can then catch another train via the Conwy Valley Line which runs through the Snowdonia National Park to Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Things to do in Snowdonia

One of the best things about Snowdonia is being able to take in the scenery without necessarily needing to drive to specific sites. There are however some convenient pit stops along the A5 that you might want to consider adding to your itinerary.

We picked up our car at 8AM on Saturday from St Pancras Station and starting from London made a lunch stop in Birmingham (on the way back made our lunch stop in Oxford).

After lunch we drove straight to our first Welsh stop, Betws-y-Coed Waterfall. There was a 1 pound entry fee per person to get into the area but it was a nice place to stretch our legs!

After this we made a quick stop at Ty Hyll, better known as ‘The Ugly House’. This is a really strange Welsh tourist attraction along the A5. Legends say it was built by robbers and thieves taking advantage of travellers as they journeyed through Snowdonia – hence the name as “ugly people” gave the house a fearsome reputation.

Driving to Llynnau Mymbyr was absolutely stunning as we had finally made it into Snowdonia National Park. For those of you from New Zealand, Snowdonia reminded me so much of NZ!

Lyn Idwal was my favourite stop of the weekend as we got a chance to stretch our legs again and walk up to the lake.

Where to Stay

While in Snowdonia I stayed at the YHA Llanberis. This accommodation was very cheap, had free parking and was ideally located to drive to nearby viewpoints. It was also only a two-minute drive to the town centre where you can find restaurants and grocery stores.

Where to Eat

Because it is small town there isn’t a vast array of restaurant options but Petes Eats was definitely a winner. They served cheap hearty food with friendly service and the servings were huge! It was a great place to grab dinner after a long day of driving.

Snowdonia National Park is a stunning region that is a perfect destination if you are looking for a laid back weekend trip. I loved Snowdonia so much that made it into my top 20 favourite travel experiences. It is a simple (and affordable!) road trip from London and unlike most places in the UK is not inundated with tourists.

Best way to travel from London to Snowdonia in 2022

Beaumaris Castle Beaumaris Castle (Welsh: Castell Biwmares), located in the town of the same name on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, was built as part of Edward I’s campaign to conquer the north of Wales after 1282. Plans were probably first made to construct the castle in 1284, but this was delayed due to lack of funds and work only began in 1295 following the Madog ap Llywelyn uprising. A substantial workforce was employed in the initial years under the direction of James of St George. Edward’s invasion of Scotland soon diverted funding from the project, however, and work stopped, only recommencing after an invasion scare in 1306. When work finally ceased around 1330 a total of £15,000 had been spent, a huge sum for the period, but the castle remained incomplete.

Penrhyn Castle Penrhyn Castle is a country house in Llandygai, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, in the form of a Norman castle. It was originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted a licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle and added a tower house. Samuel Wyatt reconstructed the property in the 1780s.

Caernarfon Castle Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon), often anglicized as Carnarvon Castle, is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon’s Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.

Aberglaslyn Pass

A mile or so to the south of the village of Beddgelert the river Glaslyn forces a passage through the Aberglaslyn Pass. This rocky wooded area is one of Wales’ most famous beauty spots; and the Welsh Highland Railway which runs through the Aberglaslyn Pass takes full advantage of the spectacular scenery.

Beddgelert Forest

A large wooded area managed by Natural Resources Wales, and a great venue for walking, biking, picnicking and camping.

Llanberis Pass

Llanberis is almost due-north of Beddgelert and the two villages are linked by a spectacular mountain pass. The area is popular with walkers and climbers and was in fact the training ground for the first successful British ascent of Everest. Pen-y-Pass, at the road’s summit, is the starting point for two popular walks to the top of Snowdon.

Nant Gwynant

This beautiful and peaceful valley cuts the mountains to the north-east of Beddgelert. The valley’s narrow floor is largely filled by two idyllic lakes, Llyn Dinas and Llyn Gwynant, along which are three campsites. The area is steeped in the Legends of King Arthur. As the A498 climbs the shoulder of Nant Gwynant there are panoramic views of the Snowdon and the neighbouring peaks.

Rhyd-Ddu

This pretty little village is located 3 ½ miles north of Beddgelert on the A4085. It stands close to the picturesque lake of Llyn Cwellyn. A popular path to the summit of Snowdon starts in the village.
