How to sterilize Sphagnum moss so it doesn’t grow back

Why You Might Want to Sterilize Sphagnum Moss

Preventing Regrowth

Most horticultural Sphagnum contains the spores of mosses, ferns, as well as seeds of other plants which come to life after a few months. You usually won’t want them, especially if you’re growing miniature and micro plants, single-species moss cultures, and creating small terrariums.

Under the premise that you are primarily interested in miniature plant species and bryophytes, here are some of the reasons why you might want to sterilize substrate:

Does long-fiber sphagnum moss need to be boiled/nuked?

I had flourishing algae on my peat-perlite-sand media for flytrap seeds. I carefully scraped off the peat around the 5-week-old sprouts and topped each seed pot with fresh media mixed with cinnamon and a touch of hydrogen peroxide.

My next batch of seeds has been soaking in rainwater. I’m planting them as they kick out a root cap. Part of the idea is to minimize the time the peat spends zipped up in a baggie.

But I’m also trying different combinations of sphagnum and peat: like, packing the seedling cup with long-fibered sphagnum moss with a dot of fine peat on top for the seed bed; 100% LFSM; and so on. I’ll do some with microwaved moss and some without.

Quarantine, sterilize sphagnum moss? : houseplants

I ordered some sphagnum moss online as its not available on stores here atm. I wanted to avoid any bugs and plant diseases so I though this was best option. Apparently its originally from china or at least the letters in the bag probably are. The moss itself looks quite similar what can be found locally in summer.

I just got it from mail and I can say it doesn’t quite look how i expected. I thought it would be totally vacuum packed and clean, no pine needles and stuff. I doesn’t seem to have soil, which is good. Also the color is more green/brown (nature like) than I thought as it was sold more light colored. Anyways, it does look clean despite some pine needles.

I am going to soak some of it on bucket today but should I sterilize it somehow or quarantine before adding as topper to my plants soil? I’m afraid of any pests, at the moment there seems to be none and the moss doesn’t smell.
