It’s also equal to 0.057 miles, rounded up, but I don’t think anyone is capable of such a visualisation. My hat would certainly be off to anyone who could understand 300 feet from that perspective, anyway! On the topic of a visual understanding of how far 300 feet is, American football fields are an excellent place to begin. Try to picture one, as the entire field — minus the zones at either end — stretches a span of 300 feet. Of course, the field is divided by yards, but with one yard being exactly equal to three feet, both systems of measurement can be used interchangeably. Three hundred feet is also a fairly standard measurement that comes up in everything from athletics and transportation, to the lengths of human production and human endurance. 300 feet is a common point of aspiration for would-be world record holders. For example, in 2010 a man set a new world record by diving more than 300 ft below water on a single breath of air, with neither fins nor any other swimming aid to help him.Recently, a group of people from San Antonio, Texas worked to create the world’s largest enchilada, a 300 ft mammoth with a weight in excess of 3,100 lbs or 6,800 kg. Unfortunately, this incredible feat did not break any records as the enterprising chefs did not wrap their enchilada in a 300 foot tortilla. This is either a regretable lack of foresight, or an indication that the grocery store was fresh out of giant, giant, giant-sized tortillas. Finally, an anonymous stunt driver will soon make an attempt to complete a world-record setting, 300 ft jump with his modified truck. This event will take place at the 2011 Indianapolis 500 as part of the celebration of its 100th anniversary. There are more examples than these, but I’ll stop here for now. Try to research some yourself!

I have been to Miami, the top of the Statue of Liberty, and I live in Los Angeles, but I have not been to the top of Big Ben. It is on my bucket list. A guided tour is available three times a day during the week and 334 stone steps lead you to the belfry. After you ascend, you will also be approximately 300 feet in the sky!
I recently dined at SER Steak + Spirits at Hilton Anatole on the 27th floor which is the same height. Having my meal by the window, my mental state shifted as I listened to the marvelous live music and enjoyed my wagyu spinalis steak.

Why do people want to build to great heights? What happens when we change our perspective? According to the Blue Bulb Project, “300 feet is about seven-tenths the height of The Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Pyramid of Giza has an estimated original height of 430 feet. The Pyramid was the tallest structure in the world for almost 4,000 years — from its construction ca. 2551 BCE until it was overtaken by the Lincoln Cathedral in Lincoln, England, built in the year 1300.”
What do you want to build? We are all constructing ourselves every day with our choices. Make sure that you step back from your situation so you can see all sides. Sometimes the best viewpoint is from the top!
Lisa Niver was invited to explore dinner at great heights by Conrad Miami, Hilton Anatole and WP24. Thank you for helping me change my attitude and my altitude.

Why Are There 5,280 Feet in a Mile?
Yes, you can blame Rome (and London) for the random number.
Alex Zaitsev
Nearly every country in the world uses the metric system as its official system of weights and measurements. Yes, fellow Americans, we are among the exceptions to this rule, but there’s no use crying over a spilt liter of milk. The customary system has its own cool history. Well, one unit of the customary system does: the mile. It can be tricky to remember how many feet in a mile, since it’s a seemingly random number: 5,280. But there is a historical reason behind it, just like these other explanations of little things you’ve always wondered about.
Where did the mile originate?
According to Mental Floss, the modern mile has origins in Roman antiquity. The term “mile” is derived from the Latin mille passum, meaning “a thousand paces.” A pace, in Roman times, was equivalent in length to five human feet lined up from toe to heel. Romans happened to be a bit smaller than modern humans, so 5,000 Roman “feet” would equate to about 4,850 modern human “feet.” That means the entire road system of the Roman empire (over 250,000 miles of roads) consists of over 1.25 billion “feet.” But that’s not the only contribution Romans made to American life.
How did it become 5,280 feet?
While the basis of this measurement was Roman, the jump of 280 feet was positively British. In 1592, Parliament wanted to standardize the measurement of the mile and made the decision that it should be equal to eight furlongs. Furlongs, which are still used as a unit of measurement in horse racing, are 660 feet long. 660 times eight equals, you guessed it, 5,280.
If you’re wondering why Britain cared about how many feet in a mile when they use the metric system, you might be surprised to learn that the United Kingdom actually does use miles in some cases! The Imperial System that America uses actually started as the British Imperial System, and Britain brought its measurement system when it colonized the Americas. Though they switched over to the metric system in the mid- to late 20th century, you can still see some “miles per hour” signs on British roads.
A quick trick to remember how many feet in a mile
Regardless of how it came to be, how many feet in a mile can be a tricky number to keep straight. Luckily, the Internet has you covered. This simple shortcut, posted on Reddit, makes it easy. Think of five tomatoes: Each syllable of that phrase represents a number in the four-digit 5,280. “Five,” “two,” “m-eight,” and “oh’s” for zero.
Without Romans, there would be no name nor baseline for the mile. Without the British, it might be a more rounded length. Thanks to tomatoes, you can easily recall the strange number. Check out some more simple memory tips to remember things more easily.
