Top 10: Ranking all the Mitubishi Lancer Evolutions

I’m a big fan of Evos, next to the WRX STI, the lancer is one of my favorite JDM cars of all time thanks to it’s rally heritage and capabilities. And since there are so many versions, obviously there are generations I like more than others. So here is, from worst to best, my ranking of all the Mitubishi Lancer Evolutions.

10- Evolution I (1992-1994)

I know this is the one that started the saga, but I’ve never been a fan of the CD9A-based Evos. And I know this is a very capable car, but the styling it’s just bland, it doesn’t look aggresive or serious enough, it’s kinda cute.

9- Evolution II (1994-1995)

Since this one looks pretty similar to the I, my opinion is the same of the latter.

8- Evolution III (1995-1996)

Out of the first three, this is my favorite. Thanks to Gran Turismo and most importantly, Initial D, I will never forget the antila…. I mean, MISUFIRINGU SYSTEMU.

7- Evolution IV (1996-1998)

Compared to the V and VI, this one doesn’t look quite aggresive. Sure the front bumper is nice, but I don’t like the narrow body, I like them thicc if you know what I mean….

6- Evolution IX Wagon (2005-2007)

The first exception out of two. The IX doesn’t change much next to the VIII, so I’ll pick the rare wagon version which is much more interesting. I mean, who wouldn’t like a Turbo AWD wagon?

5- Evolution VI TME (1999-2001)

The other exception of the rank. For me the Tommi Makinen Edition or 6.5 is so much better compared to the regular 6. But not only design-wise, also is mechanically better. The 6 looks weird with those foglights that are too big and bulgy. And the fact that this, the V and the IV, running with Gr. A spec beated the WRC spec cars in the rally championship shows how capable this machines were.

4- Evolution VIII (2003-2005)

The first Evo I saw. I discovered it thanks to a toy my friend gave me when I turned 8. I have a lot of memories racing with this car in Underground 2 and Most Wanted and all of the Top Gear reviews against subarus and lambos. And this is the most popular version here in Paraguay.

3- Evolution X (2007-2016)

The last one. This one was launched when I was turning into a car guy. I love it’s design with that massive grille and headlights that look like a pair of angry eyes. And it seems like this is last good car that Mitsubishi will ever made. It makes me sad to watch this amazing brand which in the past produced some badass models die slowly.

2- Evolution V (1998-1999)

Just look at those wide fenders, that hood with lots of vents, the front bumper with those big foglights and air vents. And the Gr. A rally car with that livery is just sick. The fact that this being still a Group A spec car won the championship beating the WRC spec cars is just impressive. This is really a street car ready to attack some rally stages from the factory.

1- Evolution VII (2001-2003)
