Safety alert 02/2011 – Cutting metal drums with an angle grinder

There have been two recent incidents in workplaces where angle grinders have been used to cut open metal drums.

A worker died when a 205 litre metal drum he was cutting with an angle grinder exploded. The drum had previously contained methylated spirits and had both bungs in place. The worker had been instructed to cut the drum in order to make a scrap metal bin. A spark from the angle grinder ignited residual vapours in the drum, which exploded.

A worker at a chemical disposal plant sustained serious burn injuries to both forearms and an injury to his right wrist after being instructed to use an angle grinder to cut holes in the tops of 205 litre metal drums to prepare the drums to be crushed for recycling. The sparks and heat from the angle grinder ignited the residual vapours causing drum to explode.

Contributing factors When operating an angle grinder it produces ignition sources such as heat and sparks.

The drums had previously contained a highly flammable liquid and there was still chemical residue left in the drums.

In one of the incidents there was no labelling on the drum. In the other incident the worker had not been informed about the hazards associated with the use of angle grinders and had limited understanding of English, therefore did not understand the risk or comprehend the safety instructions on the drum itself. Action required Angle grinders, or any other heat producing equipment, should not be used to cut metal drums that have contained flammable or combustible liquids or gases, or where there is any doubt about the previous contents of the drum.

Empty drums should be recycled through specialist cleaning companies.

All drums should be labelled and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) should be available for all hazardous substances at the workplace.

Adequate training and instruction must be provided in a way that ensures that all workers, including those with limited understanding of English, understand the MSDS information and risks associated with the work to be performed. Further information Further information can be obtained by contacting customer service on 1300 307 877 or email [email protected]

cutting 55 gal steel drum to make bbq

D DaleRC on May 11, 2015

Ok, I hope no one gets irritated for what might be a dumb question, but I was given a really old 20 Gal 150 PSI Sears Roebuck Air compressor but I need to know if this is 110V or 220V? Its a 2 HP motor and twin cylinder but I cant find anything stamped on it about the Voltage. I think its 220 because the plug end is three prong and the two flat prongs do not run the same direction. Is that a dead giveaway? Another question I have is about an old Campbell Hausfeld compressor which is just a 1/2 HP 115/V. This thing was running fine last year, and now I think the motor is shot because it just buzzes when I plug it in. The cylinder is not seized because I can turn the pulley easily by hand, but once I try to plug it in, and then unplug it.. its hard to hand turn the pulley for a few seconds and then it gets easy and rotates fine. Is there another way to test it? Thanks for the feedback!

How to Make Things Out of 55 Gallon Steel Drums

Steel drums are excellent starting points for many projects, such as Caribbean drums, membranophones, floats, and makeshift ovens. The 55 gallon steel barrel is most commonly used to store various types of oils and corrosive products and should be thoroughly cleaned with proper cleansers before using on any project. Two projects — a barbeque and an irrigation friendly rain-barrel — both require very little expense and can create a useful, reusable tool to its creator. Both projects can use half of one steel 55-gallon steel drum.

Things You’ll Need: (Rain Catcher) Rubberized Spray Paint

Stainless Steel Circular Grill

(Rain Catcher) Irrigation Line

Cleanser (Like Dish Soap) And Scrub Brush

Barbeque Spray Paint

Power Drill

Blow Torch

(Rain Catcher) 1 Brass 1/2 Inch Nozzle/Faucet

1 Clean Half Of A 55 Gallon Drum

4 Bricks

Charcoal

(Rain Catcher) 1 Clean Half Of A 55 Gallon Drum

Sanding Paper

1/2 In. Diameter Metal Pipe 6 Inches Long With A 90 Degree Elbow And An Open Fitting With A Cap.

Steel Cutting Blade Or Grinder

Cut the 55 gallon drum in half using a steel cutting saw or grinder. You will cut through the middle, giving you 2 equal-sized, round drums.

Use blowtorch to burn off any additional slag and leftover contaminates.

Cut a 1/2-inch hole on the lower side (within an inch of the bottom) of both barrels. This will allow a breathing hole for the barbeque and a faucet hole for the rain catcher.

Smooth out leftover steel and inside of both halves with heavy-grade sandpaper.

Wash out both barrels with cleanser, taking care to remove any questionable leftovers with a second or third scrubbing. Allow both barrels to fully dry.

Paint the barbeque barrels with several coats of barbeque/heat resistant paint. Paint the water-catcher barrel with several coats of rubberized spray paint. Allow to fully dry.

Place 1/2-inch faucet over rubberized barrel’s hole and secure with internal fitting. Do not over-tighten or the barrel may bend and rupture the rubber.

Add an irrigation line to the faucet’s nozzle and place barrel under active rain gutter. This completes the rain catcher.

Connect metal pipe to the hole in the barbeque barrel with the elbow pointed straight up. This hole can be easily covered with a cap if extra air is not needed for the coals.

Place four bricks at the location where you want your barbeque.

Add charcoal and grill. Enjoy your barbeque.
