The coffee truck culture in South Korea is unwaveringly becoming a trend, popularized by Korean drama sets. Food trucks were legalized in 2014 and are the easiest start-up business for those who can’t afford high-cost rent. The huge advantage of having a business on wheels is that you can conveniently move it to almost any location. Offering a wider range of products and menus, the food trucks are also being customized for aesthetic purposes as they often get featured in Korean drama and film sets. These dramas and actors are so well-loved that even Hallyu fans from the other side of the world would extend extra efforts to express their love and support by sending in coffee trucks.

THE COFFEE TRUCK CULTURE IN KDRAMA MOVIE SETS

Because shooting a drama series often entails long hours and far-off – sometimes remote – locations, feeding an entire cast and crew can be an unpleasant challenge. This is when the coffee trucks wheel in.

As a way of giving support and appreciation to a drama’s actors and production team, fans send coffee trucks to the drama’s film location. These coffee trucks serve drinks and light snacks that stave away the exhaustion of filming.

“We send Food Truck not just for our beloved actors, but we want to give appreciation to all the people who are working hard for the project. It’s a sign of our affection and concern for our favorite actor but also the entire team” Debby, the representative of the Hyun Bin fam team from Indonesia, passionately says in an online chat.

“It’s our way of showing our support for our idol’s hard work, and to show appreciation to the entire staff and crew who are working off-camera as well to create a beautiful movie/drama,” says Edelweiss Philippines, a Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin fan club based in the Philippines whose first coffee truck project was with Hyun bin during the filming of Confidential Assignment 2 last March.

WHAT IS INSIDE THE COFFEE TRUCK?

The coffee or food truck usually serves drinks, sandwiches, waffles, fruits, churros, milkshakes, pastries, and other mini snacks and sweet treats. If the truck is customized, which is normally the case, then it comes with a standee and a colorful banner of the celebrity. These greetings tend to hype up the set, motivating the cast and crew to work hard. The banner would include the celebrity’s photo and a dedication message from the fan sender. To reciprocate the kind gesture, the celebrity would take a photo beside the coffee truck and post it on their social media page much to the delight of their fans.

COLLABORATION WITH OTHER FAN CLUBS

There are two ways to send coffee trucks if your fan club isn’t based in South Korea. One is to coordinate with fan clubs in Korea to arrange coffee trucks to be sent on the set. To make this happen, local and international fan clubs collaborate not only for sending gifts but for other multiple activities such as fundraising, or promoting their fan clubs. According to the Philippine-based Hyun Bin fan club, they collaborate to raise funds so they can give their monetary share to the food truck expenses of another club. It’s logistically beneficial to reach out to other fan clubs most.

“We have a South Korean-based coordinator- like an attaché, who prepares what we need. He recommends and Phil fan club approves. In other cases, official fan clubs have direct contact with the agency or the manager itself” says the admin of Hyun bin Philippine fan page.

“It was a collaboration of International Hyun Bin fan clubs from Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam – the entire group’s name is HB ASEAN Bunnies because of the multiple fan groups [in Southeast Asia], according to the representative of Edelweiss Philippines who created the group for the purpose of Hyun Bin coffee truck project. “Hyun Bin is our first food truck project since he’s the one currently busy with filming. But once Son Ye Jin confirms a new project (whether it’s a movie or drama), we will send her a food truck as well.”

COORDINATION WITH CELEBRITY’S AGENCY /MANAGER

In the case of Vast Entertainment, an application form has to be filled up by the fan club that wishes to send food trucks to an actor in a film location. These fan clubs went through the process of filing an application form where they provided all details like – target date, number of food packs, extra gifts, etc.

“We applied in February and a few weeks later we received confirmation. While we are waiting for the slot, the team has already begun work on designing the banners and stickers that will be used. We also have a vendor supplier on standby by then.

“The group’s representative who is an admin of another BinJin fan club in Indonesia was the one who was in contact with the supplier. They communicated through Kakao Talk. Then Hyun Bin’s agency communicates to us via email because they have to review the banner design first before we can use it. It’s just a lot easier for fans of Korean actors/idols because so many available vendors can accommodate even international fans.

“Once application and logistics are approved by the agency, the agency directly coordinates with the food truck company and forwards them all the details including film location.”

HOW MUCH DOES COFFEE TRUCKS COST

The cost of coffee and food trucks relies on what you want to send and the quantity. The fancier the food is, the more expensive it will cost. It can cost as much as 2,000 USD up to 5,000 USD.

The HB ASEAN Bunnies spent around 2400 USD on the food truck.

“This is because we also sent some additional gifts to the casts and director. Also, we prepared additional gift bags for the entire production staff and crew. So I would say if a fan/fan group will only be sending a specific menu from a food truck, it’ll cost less. Coffee trucks are also cheaper because they only serve drinks like coffee and tea.”

The Hyun bin Fam Indonesian fan club spent 3.200.000 won on a food truck and gifts for the entire staff and crew.

“Last March, we sent a Food Truck with a set of food (Tteokbokki, odeng, sondae, twigim, churros) for 150 people, 5 set VIP for our beloved actor, 150 set gift (mask, hand sanitizer, hand cream, vitamin drink, coffee can, and some snack & candy) for 150 people on the field and 1 set gift for our beloved actor.”

Normally, each fan club that participates in a food truck project donates a certain amount through members’ donations. While the others would create fundraising events and projects to raise funds for gifts and support projects for their idol.

“We didn’t ask them for a specific amount, just whatever they can share. Before we even applied through Hyun Bin’s agency, we already scouted a few possible vendors based on past food truck orders of fans of other artists. But by the time we emailed our application form, we’ve already picked our final choice of vendor.”

Food or coffee trucks have become a gesture of friendship and affection as well as supporting each other’s work in the industry. It’s like saying “Fighting!”, “Congratulations!”, and “Thank you”. It lifts the spirit of the star receiving it. It also creates buzz around the person receiving the coffee truck which in return helps promote their project. Getting support from your colleagues and fans tends to motivate stars to work harder.
