Activity Description X
It is the middle of July and both you and your tomatoes are wilting in your yard, both looking to the sky and hoping for rain. Or, maybe a low-pressure cell has been napping overhead, and your arm is hurting from holding that umbrella while you watch your basement fill up with water. Either way, you would like to know how much rain has fallen—how many gallons have come down from the skies onto your roof, yard, block, or town.
You might even want to know how many baths you could get from your rainstorm?
In the form below, choose an area(s) and a rainfall amount to see how many gallons of water fell from the sky onto that area. I think you’ll be surprised about much rain really does fall during a rainstorm.
Rain Measurement
Instrument: Rain Gauge (or Rain Gage) Rainfall impacts all of us, from the lack of rain during times of drought to the dangers of flash floods when we receive too much rain too fast. For some interests – such as gardeners, farmers, and meteorologists – rain gage data is critical information. For the rest of us, obtaining rain measurement information with a rain gage is interesting and fun! A rain gauge collects falling precipitation and funnels it to a rain measurement device. In a standard manual rain gage (one that has to be manually emptied), the rain measurement device is a graduated cylinder. In home weather stations, a self-emptying tipping bucket rain gauge is the most common type of rain gauge used for rain measurement. The reading is then transmitted to the inside console for recording/display of the information. This is done either wirelessly using radio waves (wireless rain gauge) or via electronic cabling. Stand alone digital and wireless rain gauges are also available.
Rainfall rate is generally described as light, moderate or heavy. Light rainfall is considered less than 0.10 inches of rain per hour. Moderate rainfall measures 0.10 to 0.30 inches of rain per hour. Heavy rainfall is more than 0.30 inches of rain per hour. Rainfall amount is described as the depth of water reaching the ground, typically in inches or millimeters (25 mm equals one inch). An inch of rain is exactly that, water that is one inch deep. Per the USGS Rainfall Calculator, one inch of rainfall equals 6 gallons of water per square yard or 27,154 gallons of water per acre! There are other terms used to describe precipitation: type (rain, snow, etc), intensity (light, moderate, or heavy), and character (showery, intermittent, or continuous). Meteorologists use these terms in their forecasts or an actual weather event, such as “today’s light rain showers resulted in six tenths of an inch of precipitation.” All content on the WeatherShack Education Center is Copyright 2002-2020 WeatherShack.com. Rainfall explained: Is 400 millimetres really that much?
One of the features of the bomb low starting to buffet parts of the country is a lot of rain.
MetService have issued heavy rain warnings for South Island areas, including Westland, Buller, Canterbury Lakes and Nelson Lakes.
High places, like the Southern Alps, are looking at as much as 500 millimetres (that’s half a metre) of rain in less than 24 hours.
FAIRFAX NZ Here’s what you need to know about measuring rainfall ahead of this week’s weather bomb.
If you’ve been wondering how organisations like MetService measure this rainfall, we’ve got you covered.

TIPPING BUCKET
Gone are the days of the old plastic rain gauge nailed to the fence post.
MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said they now used a steel “tipping bucket-type” rain gauge, like the OTA OSK15180T tipping bucket pictured.
The buckets fill with rain and tip over every 0.2mm of rain, switching to the next bucket.
Exact rainfall is measured based on the number of times the bucket tips, Adams said.
The rainfall data is fed back to the system.
Those buckets down in Westland are likely to be doing a lot of tipping on Wednesday evening.
DO WE USUALLY GET THIS MUCH RAIN?
The short answer is no.
While places like Fiordland, Westland and Buller do get a lot of rain, 400mm over the space of 24 hours is unusual.
MetService communications meteorologist Lisa Murray said this wasn’t a typical severe weather warning.
Usually the meteorological service would issue a heavy rain warning when there was a forecast of 100mm or more over 24 hours – 400mm in 24 hours is a whole other ball game.
Murray said people didn’t typically live in the ranges at the bottom of the South Island but at this time of year, trampers and tourists frequented these parts.
It was important for people to stay away from these areas during the heavy rainfall, and understand the potential flow-on effects to roads and rivers.
BUT HOW MUCH IS 400MM?
Struggling to wrap your head around what 400mm of rain looks like?
MetService’s Adams has done some quick calculations to put all this water into perspective.
A typical West Coast house. CREDIT: TRADE ME
This 400mm of rain we’ve been talking about is equal to 400 litres per m2.
So if you were to try and drink the rainfall that fell onto the roof of an average-sized house (100m2) on the West Coast (400mm in 12 hours), you would need to drink one litre every 11 seconds. (Please don’t try this at home).
That amount of liquid would fill a 25-metre swimming pool for every 10 houses.
Alternatively, 400mm in 12 hours would fill the boot of a Smart Car every 30 minutes.
NOTE: Remove person from Smart Car before filling boot with water. CREDIT: FAIRFAX NZ
“I’ll leave it to you to figure out how you’d get a smart car into the middle of the Westland ranges,” Adams said.
