How Many People Die from Bungee Jumping? (Death Statistics)

Bungee jumping has been a popular extreme sport for a long time now, particularly with young people travelling abroad. There have been many high-profile media reports over the last few years about people dying from bungee jumping, but how many recorded deaths have there actually been?

How many people have died bungee jumping? There were 18 recorded deaths from bungee jumping between 1986 and 2002. In more recent years, there have been 5 bungee jumping fatalities recorded between 2015 and 2018. Bungee jumping death statistics report a 1 in 500,000 chance of a fatality.

Average bungee jumping deaths per year

During my research into how many people die bungee jumping, I was only able to find statistics from 1986 to 2002 and then 2015 to 2018. Based on that, I found the following fatality numbers since bungee jumping was invented.

18 deaths in 16 years: from 1986 to 2002

from 1986 to 2002 5 deaths in 4 years: from 2015 to 2018

If you take those fatalities and the years, they spread across that equates to 23 deaths in 20 years. Therefore, there are 1.15 bungee jumping deaths per year on average that get reported in the press..

I could find no recorded deaths from 2002 to 2015, but we have to assume that fatalities did occur during this time period.

Please Note: These are only “recorded deaths”. There could be more than this that I didn’t find that went un-reported due to them happening in foreign countries to non-US and UK nationals.

What are the chances of dying when bungee jumping?

Bungee jumping has had its fair share of media attention, especially with some of the tragic deaths that have been recorded since 2015 (you can see examples of those lower down the page).

However, the statistics actually tell a bit of a different story; there is only being a two in one million chance of dying. Compare that to other things such as driving, and we see the statistics below:

The risk of death whilst bungee jumping: 1 in 500,000

1 in 500,000 The risk of death whilst on a car journey: 1 in 20,000

In reality, bungee jumping is actually very safe providing it’s done correctly. The main cause of death will be human error.

Did You Know? Many states in America banned bungee jumping after deaths in the 1990s. Now there is a lot of legislation over how old you need to be to do a jump. I’ve published a table which shows each country and what the minimum age limit is.

The fatality risk of bungee jumping vs other sports

I also wanted to find out what the risk of death was in other sports, including some of the more extreme activities. This serves as a very interesting comparison.

American Football: 1 in 50,000

1 in 50,000 Base Jumping: 1 in 60

1 in 60 Boxing: 1 in 2,200

1 in 2,200 Canoeing and Kayaking: 1 in 10,000

1 in 10,000 Cycling: 1 in 140,845

1 in 140,845 Grand Prix Driving: 1 in 100

1 in 100 Hang Gliding: 1 in 560

1 in 560 Jogging and Running: 1 in 1,000,000

1 in 1,000,000 Motorcycle Racing: 1 in 1,000

1 in 1,000 Mountain Climbing: 1 in 1,750

1 in 1,750 Mountain Hiking: 1 in 15,700

1 in 15,700 Scuba Diving: 1 in 34,400

1 in 34,400 Skiing: 1 in 1,400,000

1 in 1,400,000 Skydiving: 1 in 101,083

1 in 101,083 Snowboarding: 1 in 2,200,000

1 in 2,200,000 Swimming: 1 in 1,000,000

And then to make you feel a little bit better about it, I even researched the chance of death in more everyday activities apart from driving (including a snake bite):

Air Travel: 27 deaths in every 100,000 hours flown.

27 deaths in every 100,000 hours flown. Motorbike Travel: 45 deaths for every 100 million miles driven

45 deaths for every 100 million miles driven Snake Bite: 1 in 50,000,000 chance.

Recorded deaths from bungee jumping

To calculate some of the numbers I used in the death statistics, I searched Google to see how many media reports I could find of fatal accidents.

Here’s a year by year breakdown of some of the press reports I found relating to recorded bungee jumping fatalities from the last few years.

Recorded bungee jumping deaths in 2018

I was only able to find one recorded death in 2018 which occurred in the United States.

January 4th 2018: A nurse in Colorado, United States, died when her harness disconnected on a 70-foot bungee jump attraction at the Get Air Trampoline Park. You can view the news report on Fox News.

Recorded bungee jumping deaths in 2017

No reports found.

Recorded bungee jumping deaths in 2016

As with 2018, there was only one fatality report I found in 2016, this time occurring in Brazil.

December 18th 2016: Fabio Ezequiel de Moraes of Brazil died when he leapt off a railway bridge. The bungee cord looked to be too short, as he missed the inflatable mattress, instead hitting the ground. You can view the news report on Asia One.

Recorded bungee jumping deaths in 2015

2015 had another recorded bungee jump fatality with this report from Spain.

21st July 2015: Kleyo De Abreu from London died when bungee jumping in Spain. It was due to human error, with the media reporting she misunderstood the jump instruction and hit the wall of a bridge. You can view the news report on The Independent.

Conclusion

I am planning on doing a bungee jump in Thailand next summer, so wanted to get an idea on what the chance of a fatality could be. Yep, that’s how my mind works!

Sometimes the bungee jumps in foreign countries don’t have the strict health and safety controls you might expect in the UK and United States. Many of the accidents will occur due to faulty equipment, poorly trained operators, and getting the weight calculations wrong.

If you are going to be trying this extreme sport out on your travels, here are a few safety pointers to reduce the risk of harm coming to you:

Only jump with a reputable bungee company company. Google them and see what other people have to say about the experience before you go. Does the company abide by bungee jumping regulations? For example, in Australia and New Zealand there are these rules. If it doesn’t feel right, then don’t do it.

A Colombian Woman Misunderstood Her Bungee Instructor’s ‘Jump’ Signal and Fell To Her Death

Things That Matter

Courtesy Newsflash; yisparra/TikTok

Part of the rush of daredevil activities like skydiving and bungee jumping is the feeling that you are defying death. But along with these death-defying activities comes the very real possibility of hurting yourself. Sadly, Yecenia Morales, one young Colombian woman died when bungee jumping with her boyfriend. To make things more tragic, her death was due to a simple miscommunication.

25-year-old Yecenia Morales plummeted to her death after she thought a bungee jumping staff member signaled for her to jump. But they hadn’t attached Morales to a bungee chord yet.

Woman accidentally leaps to her death in tragic bungee-jump mishap https://t.co/zjepw69aXy pic.twitter.com/zDr6eQZnGP — New York Post (@nypost) July 22, 2021

“She got confused. The signal was for the boyfriend to jump because he was already attached to the security equipment,” said mayor of Fredonia, Gustavo Guzmán to El Tiempo. “They had only put the harness on her so she got confused and rushed.”

According to reports, this was Yecenia Morales’s first time bungee jumping. She and her boyfriend had made the trek to the Amaga viaduct in northern Colombia–a popular spot for bungee jumpers. When a member of the staff of the Sky Bungee Jumping company signaled Morales’s boyfriend to jump, Morales misunderstood the signal and jumped herself. The Daily Mail reports that local authorities are investigating the area after hearing claims that two companies are offering “unauthorized” bungee jumping services at the Amaga viaduct.

Yecenia Morales fell 164 ft from the top of the viaduct to the ground. Her boyfriend rushed to the ground and desperately tried to resuscitate her with CPR. But, it was already too late.

Just reading this made my stomach drop https://t.co/q1VKu9t0lF — 1017Ѽ (@autumn7134) July 22, 2021

Later, firefighters arrived at the scene and pronounced her dead. Hospital doctors told local media outlets that Yecenia Morales suffered a heart attack before she hit the ground. Morales’s boyfriend also went to the hospital with injuries that he sustained when he rushed to the ground to help her. He is reportedly in a state of shock over the death of his girlfriend.

Morales’s family and loved are grieving over the sudden and shocking death of the young lawyer. The young woman’s brother released a statement calling his late sister “a girl with all the best values, happy, spontaneous, with virtues that made her love her friends, and helped the people in need.” He added that she she had an “entrepreneurial spirit” and that she loved to read and dance.

It is extremely rare for someone to die from a bungee jumping accident. Over the last 20 years, in the US 23 people have died from bungee-related injuries. That averages to 1.15 deaths per year.

The Scariest and Most Thrilling Bungee Jumps

Bungee jumping is the purest form of adrenaline. It is better than jumping out of a plane. You stand out on the edge and look down, and there is nothing between you and certain death except for a little cord attached to your ankles. You stare at the ground as you plummet off the edge. Your mind is not your own as you see the rocks and water approaching.

Then all of a sudden the chord pulls you back to your senses and you get that coveted ground rush. At the apex of your jump, your body and guts are torn back toward the heavens. At this point it is the best feeling on Earth. Nothing is better.

I have bungee jumped more than 25 times and have done all the highest jumps in the world. Here are the five best I’ve found.

The Nevis, Queenstown, New Zealand

440 feet high

The Nevis is the scariest bungee jump on the planet. You take a small cable car out to a suspended pod in between two massive mountains over a gorge, and then you’re at the mercy of the winds. This leap was one of the most harrowing experiences of my life.

Bloukrans Bridge Bungee, Garden Route, South Africa

716 feet high

You walk out across a metal grate bridge that you can see through, all the way to the rocksmore than 700 feet below. As if that’s not scary enough, you are then on the underbelly of a bridge with a vicious crosswind. As you inch up to the jump point, you fear your last view will be the horizon. Alas, you jump for eight seconds of free fall. When you survive, it’s the best feeling in the world.

Victoria Falls Bungee, between Zambia and Zimbabwe

364 feet high

This gained attention in January 2012 when a woman’s cord snapped mid-jump; miraculously, she survived. Since then, Zambia’s tourism minister has focused on safety here (even trying the activity himself). Apart from the hoopla, this bungee, flanked by stunning Victoria Falls, is nevertheless the most spectacular in the world. Jumping over the Zambezi River is a thrill as tourists ooh and aah a few feet behind you.

Last Resort Bungee, Near the Tibet border in Nepal

524 feet high

The Last Resort is a cliff-top adventure resort on a gorge above the Bhote Kosi River. In addition to activities including mountain biking and rafting, there is of course a bungeer jump here…from a pedestrian bridge over a sliver of a canyon. Shanty houses dot the edge of the cliffs, and so the locals watch you dive. It is a very scary jump.

Taupo Bungee, Lake Taupo, New Zealand

154 feet high

The Taupo bungee isn’t the highest, but it is one of the best because you can get dunked into the freezing water below. You can actually stipulate how deep you want to be dunked and that staff, using your weight, figures out how to get you to that point. After you reach your deepest spot underwater, you’re ripped back up into the sky, as disorientation from taking in water goes through your body. It’s a really wild jump!
