For this we are going to attempt to help 2 audiences,

If more advanced, then skip down a section to miss the basics.

Our main goals are to help you learn how much memory is needed for your device, how much memory does your pictures and music take up. What options are available?

Whats the difference in Memory terms

To start off we are going to start simple and explain the different terms we will be using, below is the different expressions for memory sizes, similar to G & KG in weights.

Next we need to know how many KB in a MB, MB in a GB, GB in a TB.

You would assume that these run in multiples of 10’s 100’s or 1000’s, and you would be partially correct, most applications do show it in that way however the truth of it is that one KB (kilobyte) is made up of 1024 bytes, this is down to Binary and how things started off, something we won’t go into here as its not going to answer any questions about how much memory you need, so we are going to stick with 1000 Bytes = 1 KB as its close enough.

In simple terms then, 1000 B = 1KB, 1000KB = 1MB, 1000 MB = 1 GB, 1000Gb = 1 TB, 1000 TB = 1 Petabyte

How much memory is my music and pictures taking up?

It isn’t an easy answer as there are so many variables but we can break it down a bit.

A CD has 700MB available on it, when using as an audio CD about 50 MB of this is taken up for set up files so it works in your car etc and give the track names.

This 650MB equates to about 74 mins of music

This in theory means that music will take up 8.78MB per min

The average song is 3.5 mins therefore 30.73 MB per average song. So an average 8GB Mp3 player will give you 260 songs, not a great deal.

This on CD is true, however if you are trying to work out how much music 4GB can hold or how much data do you need for a portable media player, 260 songs won’t sound like a lot.

Difference from CD to MP3

When ripping (getting music from CD to PC) you will normally select to convert the files to MP3. This will cut out all the parts of the music our human ears can’t pick up, the very highest above 16,000MHZ and very lows, you can choose how much you want to compact your files down by and typically will choose somewhere between 32kbbs up to 320kbps. The higher the kbps the better it will sound, personally I would go for 192kbps.

The reason for this is that kbps stands for Kilobytes per second (remember our keys above), so literally how many KB per second of song do I need. The more KBPS the file is, the more of the original audio file that can be converted without having to remove what your PC thinks it should remove.

For example if you go into iTues to convert your CD into MP3 we are given the options below. If you need help converting your CD into MP3, you can check out our other Blog on using iTunes to convert MP3.

Here is a picture of a CD (Blue) and an MP3 (Orange) @ 320kbps. You will see that the lower graphic doesn’t have as many spikes in it and a bit smoother, this simple shows that the Mp3 has had to cut out sound compared to the CD.

What this all means is if we shrink our CD file @ 30.73MB per song from above into 320KBPS MP3, this same file turns out to be 6.72MB. That’s roughly 5 x smaller, perfect for putting all your music onto 1 small memory card and unless really homed in on music with a top end system, you won’t notice the difference.

How Much memory Do I need for My Music

What do you have? I am sure that most of us have more than 100 songs, unlikely to have over 4000 so an MP3 player with 8GB should do the job, if full of music, then our 16GB MP3 version will cover you off or an MP3 player with interchangeable memory

As the average album is around 13 songs of 3.5 mins, you can see that in MP3 format, you really don’t need a great deal of space.

What if I am downloading music?

Most music streaming sites will download in different file formats, the all work slightly differently, for example iTunes uses their own file type so if you purchase these, you need to use them on an Apple device, try and take it to a friends then it won’t work, Amazon download in Mp3 which is more universal.

Other things to consider are download speed, however unlike when MP3’s 1st became big, internet speed has changed. When I did my 1st downloads as a child, I would set the PC up at night and jump out of bed in the morning with the hope of excitement only to find out that it had failed after 6 hours, this is when modems were running at 56KBPS KiloBytes Per Second (same principle as above). I have just done a test at work song every 2 seconds, or an album in 26 seconds so unless you still have a dial up modem, don’t worry about this as most modern connections are 20MBPS + (remember our key to start off? Thats a big difference)

How to avoid paying Apple for extra iCloud storage

No matter how many iOS or macOS devices you own, Apple offers just 5GB of free storage to iCloud users – a paltry amount given what rivals offer. But there are ways you can avoid paying for more storage space, or at least limit how much extra you pay.

Here are easy-to-follow tips on how to put some of the biggest iCloud data-consuming features on a diet and save money on iCloud storage.

Why do you need to manage iCloud storage?

Apple has made iCloud storage a seemingly essential element for all its products, from Macs to iPads, iPhones and even Apple TV. There are four principal elements to the service. These include:

iCloud Backup: It’s used for all the iPad, iPhone and iPod backups you’ve made without using iTunes.

Apple offers four storage options: 5GB (free); 50GB (99 cents/month); 200GB ($2.99/month); and 2TB ($9.99/month).

If you use other services, such as Apple Music or Apple TV+, then you may find it makes sense to subscribe to the Apple One service, which may save a few bucks.

The individual Apple One plan includes 50GB of storage, Music, TV+ and Arcade for $14.95/month.

The $19.95 Family plan gives you 200GB of storage, Music, TV+, and Arcade and lets you share the plan with up to five others.

How much storage are you using?

It’s easy to figure out how much iCloud storage you are using.

In iOS: Tap the top (Apple ID) section in Settings. Then tap iCloud. You should see a chart detailing how you are using iCloud storage. Tap Manage Storage to reach a page listing every item storing data in your iCloud (it also tells you how much data each item uses there). You can also delete stored data for each app or service, but don’t do so until you have first backed up that information elsewhere.

In macOS: Access System Preferences>iCloud and choose the “Manage…” option at the bottom right of the window.

In both cases you’ll see how much storage you’re using, what items are using it (for example, Photos, Docs, Mail or Backup), and where to enable and disable online storage for various applications and Apple services.

How to manage iCloud Backup

If you back up iOS device(s) to iCloud, you’ll soon hit problems if you try to stay under the 5GB storage limit. To reduce the amount of iCloud storage consumed by iCloud backups, you can back up your iOS device(s) to a Mac or PC and delete existing backups you may have created from iCloud.

You don’t actually have to back your devices up to iCloud, though it is convenient; on older Macs and PCs you can back up via iTunes instead. Just connect your device to your computer, launch iTunes (if it doesn’t launch automatically) and click the Device icon that appears to the left of the iTunes window beside the category menu.

Apple iCloud storage can easily be managed in iOS. Select “Backup” to review older backups and delete those no longer needed.

Once you’ve done that, select Summary and then choose This Computer where you see Automatically Backup. You’ll need to check the Encrypt (device name) backup item in order to keep Health and HomeKit data, and will need to create a password for this.

In the future, your iOS device(s) will automatically be backed up to your computer when it is connected, and you won’t need to store those backups on your frugal iCloud account. Once that’s set up, you can remove older device backups from iCloud.

On iOS: Tap Settings and navigate to iCloud>Manage Storage and choose Backup. Here you can review your backups and select those you wish to delete. When you tap the red Delete Backup option, you’ll be asked if you are certain of the decision. Advice: Be sure to keep the most recent backup.

On a Mac: Open System Preferences>iCloud and choose the “Manage…” option. In the next pane, choose Backups and delete those you don’t need in the same way as on iOS.

How to put iCloud Drive on a diet

Both Macs and iOS devices use iCloud to store app data and important files.

Recent Macs can use iCloud to automatically sync and store contents of both the Desktop and the Downloads folder. Once these items are made available there, you can access them from any other Apple device, so long as you are logged in using the same Apple ID. You can also access those items online using a web browser.

This is a useful feature, but if you want to limit your iCloud data, you disable this on your Mac in System Preferences>iCloud>iCloud Drive. There, you click the Options button and then untick the Desktop & Documents folders. In the future, these items will not be stored in iCloud – though existing items will remain. To remove those older Desktop and Downloads items from iCloud drive, you must manually save them to your Mac:

In Finder, open iCloud Drive and locate the Documents or Downloads folder.

Open a new Finder window, choose Go>Home

Now drag and drop items from iCloud Drive to your Home directory. The files will be downloaded to and saved on your Mac. The process may take a while, depending on how much bandwidth and how much data you need to shift.

You can then delete the items from iCloud Drive.

Don’t forget, these items will no longer be available across your other devices unless you move them to another service that syncs across all your systems.

Save your Files elsewhere

macOS and iOS devices both support third-party online storage services such as Box, Dropbox or Microsoft One Drive (which offers 1TB of free storage with an Office 365 subscription). Apple’s Files app for iOS also supports third-party services including Box, Dropbox and OneDrive. The support makes it seamless: install the relevant storage app on your device, log-in, and you’ll be able to access any data you have stored in those non-iCloud services using the Files app. You no longer need to save those files in iCloud. You can also use Dropbox and OneDrive to automatically save your photos and other images, further reducing your reliance on iCloud.

Apple The Files app in iOS 11 allows you to keep track of files no matter which Apple device they’re on – and it works with third-party cloud storage providers.

What about app data?

Do you use every iCloud service? Think about only relying on essential services that you really need to sync between devices in real time, things like Contacts and Calendars, for example. These useful services don’t consume much storage but do provide a great deal of convenience. You can control which Apple services save to iCloud in settings, just untick those you don’t need to disable them.

You can also consider alternatives. For example, Apple’s Notes application is becoming an increasingly capable competitor to Evernote – but if you only keep a few notes, you can use the latter’s free service to replace Notes in iCloud.

The new high-end iPhone models bring a new feature that can take your photos to the next level but think twice before you turn it on.

iPhone photos RAW files

You may have heard photographers talk about shooting in RAW. When you snap a photo with your phone or digital camera, it is saved as an image file, such as a JPEG, TIFF, or RAW.

A JPEG is a processed, compressed image that’s ideal for everyday use. These images don’t take up much storage space and are easy to share via text, email, and social media.

On the other hand, RAW files are huge by comparison and can eat up a ton of storage space. RAW files are just that – the raw photo data. Your camera stores the photo as it was taken, without processing or compression.

The result is a much larger file than a JPEG, but that comes with greater control. You can edit a photo’s white balance, color, and exposure much more precisely with a RAW file.

Where RAW really shines is saving your under- or overexposed photos. Say you underexposed your subject’s face and he or she is just a shadow; there’s no saving it. If you shot in RAW, you’ll most likely have enough data to bring out the details in your subject’s face.

iPhone ProRAW setting is good and bad

It wasn’t long ago that the RAW image format was reserved for digital cameras. The feature came to smartphones via third-party apps more recently. In December, Apple introduced its ProRAW format with iOS 14.3.

Here’s the bad news: This is only available if you have an iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max. ProRAW gives you the benefits of so-called lossless imagery and works on all four of the iPhone 12 Pro’s cameras. This means that your RAW images make full use of Apple’s Smart HDR and Deep Fusion, as well as night mode.

ProRAW also uses the industry-standard DNG file extension, allowing you to edit photos with third-party software.

To turn it on: Go to Settings > Camera > Formats, then toggle on Apple ProRAW to try it out.

A RAW icon will appear in your camera app, which you can toggle on and off as you shoot.

When you close the camera app and reopen it, ProRaw defaults to off. To keep it on permanently, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and toggle ProRAW on.

Leave ProRAW turned off

RAW photos take up a ton of storage space, and Apple itself puts a warning in the camera settings, citing that each file is 25MB. Compare this to the standard JPEG photos on your phone that take up about 1MB of space.

You can fit hundreds of JPEG photos for each gigabyte of space on your phone, but fewer than 50 RAW photos. The smallest storage capacity available for the iPhone 12 Pro is 128GB.

If you have 50GB free, that’s enough room for 25,000 JPEG photos at an average of 2MB each. That same space can only fit about 2,000 RAW images. This may seem like a lot, but remember that you can’t do much with these photos until they are edited and saved as a different file type. They are unwieldy and not easily shareable.

My recommendation? Leave ProRAW turned off until you actually need it.
