Answer 186: When the Prophet Musa and Aaron (pbuth) passed away in the wilderness. It is narrated that the Malak al-Mawt (Azrael) shaped in the form of a human and digged the grave of the prophet. That’s why the Bani Israel don’t know the exact place where the prophet (peace be upon him) is buried. The holy Prophet (pbuh) was asked where is the grave of the prophet Musa? He said: it is on a great path by the way near the red sand hill (al-Kathib al-Ahmar). And there was a difference of 500 years between the prophet Musa and Dawood (David) (as) and 1100 years between Dawood and Prophet Isa (pbuth).According to Imam Sadiq of Baqir (pbuth), the holy Prophet Musa (as) passed away at the age of 120 on the 21th night of the holy month of Ramadan.[1]

مَاتَ هَارُونُ وَ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ فِي التِّيهِ فَرُوِيَ أَنَّ الَّذِي حَفَرَ قَبْرَ مُوسَى هُوَ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ فِي صُورَةِ آدَمِيٍّ وَ لِذَلِكَ لَا يَعْرِفُ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ مَوْضِعَ قَبْرِ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ص عَنْ قَبْرِهِ فَقَالَ عِنْدَ الطَّرِيقِ الْأَعْظَمِ عِنْدَ الْكَثِيبِ الْأَحْمَرِ قَالَ وَ كَانَ بَيْنَ مُوسَى وَ بَيْنَ دَاوُدَ خَمْسُمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ وَ بَيْنَ دَاوُدَ وَ عِيسَى أَلْفُ سَنَةٍ وَ مِائَةُ سَنَةٍ.
“أَخْبَرَنِي الشَّيْخُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَبَانٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ) قَالَ الْغُسْلُ فِي سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ مَوْطِناً وَ سَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَى أَنْ قَالَ وَ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَ عِشْرِينَ أَيْ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ هِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي أُصِيبَ فِيهَا أَوْصِيَاءُ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ وَ فِيهَا رُفِعَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ (عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ) وَ قُبِضَ مُوسَى (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ”).[2]

The Story of Musa and Malak al-Mawt
It is mentioned in some relaible authenitc hadiths that Imam Jaafar al-sadiq (as) said that when the end of Musa’s life approached and the angle of Death came and said: O kalimullah, Assalaamu Alaikum. Musa responded Wa Alaik al-Salaam. Who are you? The angle replied: I am the angle of death. He asked, Why have you come? He replied, To take your soul. Musa aksed, From where will you seize it? He replied, From your mouth. Musa asked, How will you seize it from the mouth when I have conserved with the Allah the Almighty with it? The angle replied, Alright, I will seize it from your hands, Musa exclaimed, How will you seize it from my hands when these hands held the Torah? He said, from your legs. Musa said, How, when I climbed up Mount Sinai with them. Malak al-Mawt said, from your eyes. Musa said, How, when I look towarss Allah, the Almighty in farfetched hopes with them? He said, then from your ears. Musa said, How, when I have heard the words of my Lord, the Glorified and Majestic is He.
So, Allah (SWT) told Malak al-Mawt, Do not take his soul, until he desires it to be taken.
The Malak al-Mawt left then. And Musa remained alive until Allah desired him to be alive, and He called upon Yousa bin Noon and he gave successorship to him. And he ordered him to guard his role and ordered to also later name a successor to guard his role.
Musa went to his occoultaton from his people. While in his occultation he passed a man was digging a grave. So, he said to him, Can I observe you with digging this grave? The man said, Yes. When the grave was dug to its completion, Musa lied down in it to see how it felt so that the veils where lifted and he saw his place in Heaven. He said then, ‘Oh my Lord, take me to you. So, the Malak al-Mawt took his soul and buried him in the grave. And put the dust upon him.
The man was digging the grave was Malak al-Mawt shaped in the form of a Human, and it was in the wilderness. A caller, then, gave a great call to the Heaven, Musa Kaleemullah has passed away.
A man asked The holy Prophet (pbuh), Where is the grave of the prophet Musa? He said: It is on a great path by the way near the red sand hill (al-Kathib al-Ahmar).[4]

Moses | Story, Summary, Significance, & Facts
This article, following the lead of the biblical archaeologist and historian W.F. Albright , presents a point of view that falls somewhere between these two extremes. While the essence of the biblical story (narrated between Exodus 1:8 and Deuteronomy 34:12) is accepted, it is recognized that, during the centuries of oral and written transmission, the account acquired layers of accretions. The reconstruction of the documentary sources of the Pentateuch by literary critics is considered valid, but the sources are viewed as varying versions of one series of events (see biblical literature: The Torah [Law, Pentateuch, or Five Books of Moses] ). Other critical methods (studying the biblical text from the standpoint of literary form, oral tradition , style, redaction, and archaeology) are equally valid. The most accurate answer to a critical problem is therefore likely to come from the convergence of various lines of evidence. The aid of critical scholarship notwithstanding, the sources are so sketchy that the man Moses can be portrayed only in broad outline.
Opposing this is the theory of the German scholar Martin Noth , who, while granting that Moses may have had something to do with the preparations for the conquest of Canaan , was very skeptical of the roles attributed to him by tradition. Although recognizing a historical core beneath the Exodus and Sinai traditions, Noth believed that two different groups experienced these events and transmitted the stories independently of each other. He contended that the biblical story tracing the Hebrews from Egypt to Canaan resulted from an editor’s weaving separate themes and traditions around a main character Moses, actually an obscure person from Moab.
Few historical figures have engendered such disparate interpretations as has Moses. Early Jewish and Christian traditions considered him the author of the Torah (“Law,” or “Teaching”), also called the Pentateuch (“Five Books”), comprising the first five books of the Bible , and some conservative groups still believe in Mosaic authorship.
The date of Moses
According to the biblical account, Moses’ parents were from the tribe of Levi, one of the groups in Egypt called Hebrews. Originally the term Hebrew had nothing to do with race or ethnic origin. It derived from Habiru, a variant spelling of Ḫapiru (Apiru), a designation of a class of people who made their living by hiring themselves out for various services. The biblical Hebrews had been in Egypt for generations, but apparently they became a threat, so one of the pharaohs enslaved them. Unfortunately, the personal name of the king is not given, and scholars have disagreed as to his identity and, hence, as to the date of the events of the narrative of Moses. One theory takes literally the statement in I Kings 6:1 that the Exodus from Egypt occurred 480 years before Solomon began building the Temple in Jerusalem. This occurred in the fourth year of his reign, about 960 bce; therefore, the Exodus would date about 1440 bce.
This conclusion, however, is at variance with most of the biblical and archaeological evidence. The storage cities Pitḥom and Rameses, built for the pharaoh by the Hebrews, were located in the northeastern part of the Egyptian delta, not far from Goshen, the district in which the Hebrews lived. It is implicit in the whole story that the pharaoh’s palace and capital were in the area, but Thutmose III (the pharaoh in 1440) had his capital at Thebes, far to the south, and never conducted major building operations in the delta region. Moreover, Edom and Moab, petty kingdoms in Transjordan that forced Moses to circle east of them, were not yet settled and organized. Finally, as excavations have shown, the destruction of the cities the Hebrews claimed to have captured occurred about 1250, not 1400.

Inasmuch as tradition figured about 12 generations from Moses to Solomon, the reference to 480 years is most likely an editorial comment allowing 40 years for each generation. Since an actual generation was nearer 25 years, the most probable date for the Exodus is about 1290 bce. If this is true, then the oppressive pharaoh noted in Exodus (1:2–2:23) was Seti I (reigned 1318–04), and the pharaoh during the Exodus was Ramses II (c. 1304–c. 1237). In short, Moses was probably born in the late 14th century bce.

After the publication of this atlas, Mansa Musa became cemented in the global imagination as a figure of stupendous wealth.
After his return from Mecca, Mansa Musa began to revitalize cities in his kingdom. He built mosques and large public buildings in cities like Gao and, most famously, Timbuktu. Timbuktu became a major Islamic university center during the 14th century due to Mansa Musa’s developments. Mansa Musa brought architects and scholars from across the Islamic world into his kingdom, and the reputation of the Mali kingdom grew. The kingdom of Mali reached its greatest extent around the same time, a bustling, wealthy kingdom thanks to Mansa Musa’s expansion and administration.
Mansa Musa died in 1337 and was succeeded by his sons. His skillful administration left his empire well-off at the time of his death, but eventually, the empire fell apart. Well after his death, Mansa Musa remained engrained in the imagination of the world as a symbol of fabulous wealth. However, his riches are only one part of his legacy, and he is also remembered for his Islamic faith, promotion of scholarship, and patronage of culture in Mali.
