Elsewhere in the British Isles, longer miles were used, including the Irish mile of 6,720 feet (2.048 km) and the Scottish mile of 5,952 English feet (1.814 km).
A nautical mile was originally defined as the length on the Earth’s surface of one minute (1/ 60 of a degree) of arc along a meridian (north-south line of longitude). Because of a slight flattening of the Earth in polar latitudes, however, the measurement of a nautical mile increases slightly toward the poles. For many years the British nautical mile, or admiralty mile, was set at 6,080 feet (1.85318 km), while the U.S. nautical mile was set at 6,080.20 feet (1.85324 km). In 1929 the nautical mile was redefined as exactly 1.852 km (about 6,076.11549 feet or 1.1508 statute miles) at an international conference held in Monaco, although the United States did not change over to the new international nautical mile until 1954. The measure remains in universal use in both marine and air transportation. The knot is one nautical mile per hour.
What Are Statute Miles?
Miles are units of length, measuring 5,280 feet or eight furlongs, commonly used in the United States and Great Britain. A statute mile is the name given to the definitive measurement used in Britain and America, where the miles referred to on roads signs or maps for example are statute miles. There are slight differences between the statute, international and nautical mile.
Origins of the Mile
The word mile stems from the Latin word mille, which means 1,000. The Roman mile was 1,000 paces. As the Romans defined a pace as two steps, left and right, it meant a total of 2,000 steps. There are obvious problems with using inconsistent measurements such as steps, which can vary person to person, and eventually a set distance needed to be decided upon. In an act of Parliament, Queen Elizabeth I decreed that a mile was to be eight furlongs, 80 chains, 320 rods [1], 1,760 yards or 5,280 feet. The length was statutorily decided upon in 1592, hence the name statute mile.
Statute vs. International Mile
As our ability to measure more and more precisely grew, it became recognized that different countries were using slightly different measurements for feet and yards, and as yards were used to measure a mile, slightly different mile lengths were being used. Various countries agreed to an international measurement of the foot to be 30.48 centimeters, making the international mile 1,609.344 meters exactly (to confuse the issue this can also be called an international statute mile). The U.S. statute mile, also called a survey mile, measures 1609.3472 meters, a difference of 3.2 millimeters (1/8 inch) per mile. This is due to a usage of the equation of a survey foot equaling 1,200/3,937 meters rather than 30.48 centimeters.
Nautical vs. Statute Mile
Nautical miles were originally worked out differently to miles, due to the nature of sea travel. They were measured using the arc of the Earth, and were 1 percent of 1 degree of the Earth’s curve. As the curve of the Earth isn’t completely even and spherical, this meant that in some areas, a nautical mile was larger than in others. In 1954, America agreed that the international nautical mile of 1,852 meters would be adopted.

What Is The Difference Between A Mile And A Nautical Mile?
Love songs tell us that a real lover would walk five hundred miles and go someplace across the sea to find true love. For those charting a sentimental journey over land and sea, A Moment of Science would like to clarify a small point of navigation: the difference between a mile on land and a nautical mile.
Miles And Miles
The familiar land mile is 5,280 feet, is called a statute mile, and it’s based on paces.
On the other hand, the nautical mile is used for distances on the ocean and doesn’t have a tangible equivalent like paces. It’s a mathematical calculation based on degrees of latitude around the equator.
The equator is a circle, which we know has 360 degrees. Each degree is divided into sixty minutes, which are not the same as the minutes on your watch. In navigation, one minute is called a nautical mile. So each degree of latitude is sixty minutes or sixty nautical miles.
Nautical Miles
To put it another way, at 6,076 feet a nautical mile is longer than a statute mile, which has only 5,280 feet.
So, if our poor loverboy has to travel five hundred miles to find his sweetheart, he might have to walk five hundred statute miles which is over two million feet, or he might have to sail or swim five hundred nautical miles, which is over three million feet. On the other hand, he could just ignore love songs altogether, and stick with the girl next door.
