Understanding Pet Water Bottles

Understanding Pet Water Bottles

“Vacuum Valve”

Is That Drip Normal?

Continuous Dripping or Emptying Out

Check inside the cap of your bottle, and you should see a rubber gasket inside the cap. If the gasket is missing or damaged, your bottle will continuously drip. Depending on the style of bottle, the gasket will be different colors. The wide mouth 32 and 16 oz bottles have a blue gasket; the wide mouth 64 oz bottles have a yellow gasket; and the standard neck water bottles have a black gasket. Fill the water bottle completely full with room temperature water. A bottle filled halfway or fully with cold water will take longer to create a vacuum and will drip more. Once you have filled the bottle, tighten the cap securely, tap the ball bearing at the sink a few times, hang it on the cage/crate, and tap the ball bearing a few more times. Your water bottle should stop dripping within a few minutes. The smaller the bottle, the quicker the dripping will stop. For 32 and 64 oz bottles, hold the bottle so that the tube is facing up, squeeze the bottle until you force a small amount of water out, then turn it over and hang it on the cage/crate. (Think of it like a doctor clearing a syringe of air before giving you a shot.) The 32 oz and 64 oz bottles will take longer to form a vacuum than the 8 and 16 oz bottles.

Additional Tips

If the water bottle is mounted on a crate or carrier and the animal is large, the bottle might shake a few drips out when the animal is moving about. Some people put a small “drip” cup under the tube tip to catch those drips. In addition, most ball bearing bottles will drip if in a moving crate. It is recommended you purchase a valve bottle for carriers in vehicles, airplanes, etc.

The bottle will not stop dripping while you hold it because your hand actually puts a slight pressure on the bottle, plus your hand is warm. It doesn’t usually stop dripping until you hang it on a cage or carrier.

All water bottles will occasionally drip after a pet drinks, and with temperature changes where the water bottle is located. For best results, keep the water bottle away from windows where sunlight comes in and warms the bottle.

Pet water bottles that feature a metal drinking tube with one or more metal ball bearings inside that tube are able to hold the water contents because a vacuum is formed in the sealed bottle. The metal ball allows a film of water to remain between the ball and the open end of the drinking tube. Since the movement of the exposed ball bearing breaks this seal, and the vacuum within the water bottle is released, the moving ball is in effect an opening and closing valve. If the pet licks or nudges the ball, he can access water as it flows down through the tube, keeping the ball moving and the valve “open.” When the pet leaves the water bottle and the ball settles into place at the end of the drinking tube, the film of water reforms and the valve “closes.”This little drip is the first release of water and is created as your water bottle forms a new vacuum seal. In order for a vacuum to form within the sealed water bottle, the air space and water volume need to equalize. This little release of water is the after effect of this equalization as the pressure stabilizes, and it is perfectly normal.A single droplet at the end of the drinking tube is not a sign of a leaking water bottle. To help establish the vacuum seal when the water bottle is first filled and mounted, tap the ball bearing several times with your fingertip. This releases small amounts of water and speeds up the equalization of the vacuum pressure. If your water bottle seems to continuously drip or empty out, there are a few steps you can follow to correct the issue. If you need help, call us at 800.786.4751 – The Revival Education Team

Preventing Cap Issues: 5 Reasons Why Plastic Bottles Leak

Even a small leak is a big problem. Leaking caps are an issue whether they occur when your plastic bottles are warehoused, shipped, or placed on the retail shelf for sale. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to mitigate the occurrence of leaking packaging. Let’s break down some potential reasons why cap leakage occurs (and what you can do to prevent it from happening).

5 Ways to Maintain Leak Proof Plastic Bottles

Apply the right amount of torque when sealing bottle caps

One of the most common reason for cap leakage is that the caps are either put on with too much or not enough twisting force. Every type of plastic bottle cap has a certain specified torque range to help ensure proper sealing. Applying a cap with a torque outside of that range is a potential reason for future product leaks.

The reason why too little torque can cause cap leakage is simple – the cap’s soft liner material will likely not be sealed tightly enough to prevent future leaks. Too much torque creates other issues. If you use too much torque, the cap can strip the threads within the cap and cause the closure to become loose. Too much torque can also wrinkle the cap liner within the cap, making product leaks a possibility.

The solution for these issues is two-fold: identify the right torque and test your containers. Your packaging supplier’s engineering team can provide recommended cap torque specifications for your closures. There are also general industry standards available. For example, a 28 mm cap would typically use somewhere around 15 inch pounds of force.

Even if you follow manufacturer recommendations and industry standards, you should always test your plastic bottles and caps for good measure. A bench top tool tester will allow test each product bottle and cap combination. Once sealed, let your containers sit for 24 hours under slight pressure to ensure you have a tight seal and no leakage.

Securely attach induction seals to plastic bottles

Another potential source of plastic bottle leakage is an improperly applied induction seal. An induction seal is arguably the best way to seal a plastic bottle for just about any type of product. These plastic liners require an electromagnetic pulse to excite the molecules enough the heat up the induction seal and attach it to the opening of the plastic bottle. However, improper application will pose problems.

As with the torque issue, too much or too little heat can create leakage issues. Not enough of a sealing time will not completely and correctly attach the induction seal. Too much of a sealing time will burn the seal, which can create small pinholes in the liner that will allow for product leaks.

Just like with caps, induction seal manufacturers can provide recommendations for application. However, you’ll still want to test out potential sealing ranges to make sure your bottles are properly secure. Once you apply your induction seal, lay the bottle down sideways for 24 hours to test it. You can also do 10 sample seals at varying levels to get a good range of potential leakage. Adding weight on top of the sideways bottles can also test the security of the induction seals even further.

Avoid product and chemical incompatibility

Some plastics and chemicals just don’t work well together. Aggressive chemicals such as acetones and fuel additives can break down your bottles and caps if you don’t use compatible materials.

Fortunately, packaging engineers are a great resource for material compatibility information. These experts can tell you which cap liners are best suited for your fill products, especially if your chemical is more aggressive.

Even after these recommendations, you’ll still want to test your plastic bottle and cap combination to make sure that your fill product won’t pose any packaging problems. Heating the filled bottles in a testing oven will help accelerate any kind of chemical process caused by aggressive chemicals. This process will give you a better idea of how your product may affect the cap liner.

Ensure the cap thread matches your plastic bottle’s neck finish

A mismatched cap thread can definitely lead to leakage issues for plastic bottles. There are different threads types available for plastic bottle caps, but some caps fit better with certain types of neck finishes. For example, a standard 38-400 cap has a single turn of threads, whereas the 410 and 415 models feature additional threads.

This potential for mismatched caps and bottles is why groups like the Closure Manufacturers Association have standardized certain specifications. You can work with Pipeline Packaging to get specification drawings and make sure your cap thread matches what’s on the neck of your bottle. You can also refer to Pipeline Packaging’s Cap and Neck Finish Measurement and Compatibility Guide for more information.

Account for potential stack pressure on top of the plastic bottle

Even if your caps are a perfect fit for your plastic bottles, too much pressure placed on top of the bottle can pose problems in the future. Too much weight coming down on the bottle will create pressure within your container. This excess pressure will put stress on the weakest point of your packaging, which is typically the cap seal. As such, this pressure can cause the cap seal to leak or even completely burst.

As you may expect, you want to ensure that any pressure or weight on top of the bottle won’t break the seal. This issue often occurs when the corrugated box the bottles are shipped and stored and aren’t properly designed to take the weight off your containers, especially when there are pallet loads that are stacked two or three high. Pipeline Packaging can help you test bottles and cartons – especially under humid conditions.

Invest in Leak Proof Plastic Bottles and Caps for Your Products

When you’re trying to identify ways to prevent your caps from leaking, your packaging supplier can be one of your greatest assets. At Pipeline Packaging, our team can work with you to identify the right closures for your containers. We can also conduct packaging tests to identify any potential issues before they become a costly problem.

How to Fix a Dripping Guinea Pig Water Bottle

A guinea pig bottle leaking is an annoying problem, but thankfully, it’s an easy one to solve by creating a vacuum seal between the lid and bottle or by replacing the rubber gasket inside the bottle. You can typically fix a ball bearing water bottle leaking without having to replace the bottle.

You can typically fix a ball bearing water bottle leaking without having to replace the bottle.

Video of the Day

Some dripping is normal

A single drop hanging from the bottle after it’s been filled or used is not unnatural and doesn’t mean that the bottle is leaking. A ball bearing water bottle leaking looks like a constant dripping motion or an entirely empty bottle.

It’s also normal for larger guinea pig water bottles (for example, those measuring 32 and 64 ounces) to drip for a little longer than small guinea pig water bottles after they’ve been filled. The bottle may naturally drip as your guinea pig moves around inside his cage or when he knocks into the bottle. It’s a good idea to place a small bowl or cup underneath the bottle to catch this excess water.

Check the bottle for damage

Sometimes, a guinea pig bottle leaking means that the water bottle needs to be replaced. Check the water bottle for any cracks, holes, or wear and tear that could be causing the problem and replace it if needed. Check for damage every time you clean your guinea pig’s water bottle.

Check the inside of the bottle’s lid to see if there’s a rubber gasket. Without a rubber gasket ring inside the cap, there’s no way to create a seal between the lid and the bottle. If the rubber gasket is missing, cracked, or damaged in any way, the water bottle will drip. The rubber gasket will typically be a visible color or a black ring, so it should be easy to notice. If it’s not there, replace it or buy a new bottle.

Stop guinea pig or hamster bottle leaking

The best way to stop a bottle from leaking is by creating a vacuum seal between the lid and the bottle. Guinea pig owners can create a seal by filling the bottle completely and then tightening the lid securely. Then, flip the bottle and squeeze out any excess water. This can create suction that will hold until you unscrew the cap again. You can also try filling the water bottle until liquid is spilling out, tightening the lid, and quickly flipping it to create that same suction.

Stop ball bearing water bottle leaking

Many guinea pig water bottles will have a ball bearing in the metal tube from which the animal licks water. To fix a leaking ball bearing water bottle, fill the bottle full of water and tighten the lid securely. Then, tap the metal tube holding the ball bearing gently against the sink a few times, hang it in the cage, and tap the ball bearing a few more times. The bottle might drip a little at first but should stop.

Clean the guinea pig water bottle

It’s best to follow manufacturer instructions whenever you clean a guinea pig water bottle, so read the instructions and check for any warranties before you begin. To clean a guinea pig water bottle, simply hand wash it with soap and warm water, rinsing thoroughly to remove soap residue. It can be hard to reach all the way into the water bottle, so try using a bottle brush, an unused toothbrush, or a sponge to wash every inch.

Alternatives to guinea pig bottles

If you’re tired of dealing with a bottle leaking all over your guinea pig’s home, it might be time to use a water bowl or dish instead. Guinea pigs can drink from water bowls and dishes, and some older or injured guinea pigs may prefer it. Just like water bottles, bowls and dishes will need to be regularly cleaned and checked for damage. Also, take care not to overfill the water bowls, as they can splash water into the bottom of your guinea pig’s cage.
