Media concentration in both countries has reached phenomenal levels, and it is compounded by the massive spread of pernicious fake news. Conn Hallinan, a columnist with Foreign Policy in Focus , a project of the Washington, D.C.–based Institute for Policy Studies, tells me that when Ben Bagdikian published his book The New Media Monopoly in 2004, there were 100 corporations controlling media outlets in the U.S. As of September 2020, six corporations control 90 per cent of media outlets in the U.S.: AT&T, CBS, Comcast, Disney, News Corp and Viacom. Hallinan adds that “people read what those [six] corporations want them to read, and corporations like lower taxes, fewer financial and environmental regulations, in short, whatever makes them the most money. Since profits are the bottom line, staffs are cut back, papers are merged, and stories dumbed down to not upset anyone. So fewer papers, fewer reporters, tighter budgets (which means no investigative reporting) and a less informed population. Because democracy only works when people are informed enough to make choices, democracy is diminished.” As Mickey Huff has said, (in a video panel discussion), six corporations controlling the media is just another sign among many others that the U.S. is not a democracy. Huff, who is director of Project Censored, a U.S. media literacy organization, describes the country as “an inverted totalitarian state, sort of a corporate society governed with illusions that [the state] responds to the people every four years [after a ballot] riddled with election fraud.” He points out that “even the elitists at Princeton University and Northwestern University have called the U.S. a plutocracy and an oligarchy [in 2013].” Nolan Higdon, who co-authored a book about the U.S. media with Huff titled The United States of Distraction (2019), agrees that the country is not a democracy, and this is partly due to media concentration. Higdon is also author of The Anatomy of Fake News: A Critical News Literacy Education (University of California Press, 2020) and a lecturer in media studies and history at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He tells me about the effects of media concentration in the U.S., where legacy media is both made up of and seeks the approval of economic and political elites, and is used as a divide- and-conquer-strategy by those same elites. While it is enforcing oligarchy inside the U.S., the mainstream media is also giving a warped view of the outside world to Americans, encouraging support for a foreign policy grounded in endless war. Even Donald Trump admitted this was the case when he was president. “As a result,” Higdon says, “their reporting and messaging does not veer into populist discourses that reflect the will of the majority of people or the issues that concern them.… Instead, they reduce everything to a narrow frame of Republicans versus Democrats. The audience tunes into MSNBC or CNN or reads The Washington Post or The New York Times to boo Republicans and cheer Democrats. And users of Fox News Channel, Forbes , The Wall Street Journal , and Breitbart do the same to cheer Republicans and boo Democrats.…The emphasis on what divides us distracts from the neoliberal ideology of empire that binds parties and the elite class that fund, support, and run them.” While it is enforcing oligarchy inside the U.S., the mainstream media is also giving a warped view of the outside world to Americans, encouraging support for a foreign policy grounded in endless war. Even Donald Trump admitted this was the case when he was president. As Higdon puts it, “Americans hear almost nothing about what is going on overseas.” He points out how, with very few foreign correspondents on the ground, legacy media now rely extensively on military and intelligence experts: “These are folks who have a vested interest in perpetuating war and denigrating the so-called enemy. The mass media may not be successful in telling people what to think but undoubtedly they are successfully telling their audience what to think about. The media cannot force anyone to believe in something or to have a certain opinion on a subject but at least it makes an influencing impression of which face of the coin does it think important. It makes a pre-notion or say first impression about the subject in the hearts of the audience and that off course changes the course of our thinking to a larger extent. So to a certain extent, yes, the media is controlling some of our decisions. Nowadays the media clearly tells that if you are thinking like this you are not right, you must rethink like the way they tell you to. Suppose let’s take an example of how teleshopping is done on television. The advertisement of a belt which has to be tied on stomach and waist 24 hours can reduce your weight. In the advertisement they clearly say and even show that running and exercises can’t make you slim and fit and that if you want to look slim and smarter you must use that belt 24 hours and needn’t running or any exercises daily. The question here is that they don’t even mention once that how good running or exercising is for healthy life rather than using the belt. Many people start thinking in that way and their lifestyle etc. is determined by their media friends only. These forms of media have big impact on the way we think, they feed us with endless promises and bombard us with telenovelas, advertisements, comics etc. They control what we think, whether we like it or not, they are here to stay. The best to thing to do is to be confident on what we believe in and not let them fry our brains with their gimmicks. The point here is that media is neither bringing the real problem or issues before the public nor it leaves the judgement on the audience or public but they have their judgements and they impose it on us which due to continuous repetition fits well in our mind and we are tended to take decision accordingly. One clear example of this is perception of people about Donald trump in India . Today a person in India who doesn’t know even the name of his local MLA to whom should he approach for societal works also found to be commenting sadly on elect president ..Ohhh Trump has won,very bad for India or somebody claims it to be very friendly for India .. The question here is who has taught them to make their judgements regarding him either it be positive or negative. The answer is it’s non other than media. There has been a recent trend in following celebrities on twitter, Facebook and then adopting their lifestyles as much as possible with the fact that we forget we realise that there is a huge difference between real life of that celebrity and what is being projected virtually. In a modern trend the decision of students to take admission in professional courses viz., B.E, B.Tech , MBA etc are highly influenced by rankings projected in media by different agencies and not the harsh realities which they never come to know.

Recently I heard a TED talk with Technology Ethicist Tristan Harris. It was about how incredibly effective technology has become in mass mind control… and it was terrifying. Advertisers and social media are subtly and effectively controlling our minds by controlling our attention. Facebook, CNN.com, SnapChat, Twitter, Netflix, etc. are all in a race for our attention. The problem is, there’s only so much of it to go around.
As an example, we know YouTube wants to maximize the amount of time we spend there. So they have engineers who are constantly designing algorithms to accurately measure and predict the type of media that will keep you engaged. These algorithms are so good they can almost always select the best piece of media to keep your attention. Of course, YouTube just can’t rely on you to go there every day like clockwork. You have a life. But, have you ever noticed how YouTube will start to autoplay the next video, and then the next, and the next, and the next? Before you know it, you’ve spent an hour watching cat fails or crazy mountain bikers.
Then the cycle spreads. The CEO at NetFlix knows that YouTube will take away from their screen time so they start to autoplay the next episode. Facebook says that’ll take away from their screen time so they start autofeeding the news feeds. And so on.
If you have a teenager, listen up! Snapchat is the most popular way teenagers communicate. Whereas Gen Xers use texting, Millennials and Gen Z use Snapchat – all 100 million of them. In order to maximize screen time, Snapchat invented a feature called SnapStreaks, which keeps track of the number of consecutive days two people have communicated. What does this do? It meets a base human need… it just gave two people something they don’t want to lose. If you’re a teenager and you have 86 days in a row of communication with a friend, you don’t want to lose that. Think of the little blocks of attention that schedules in a teenager’s minds.
Studies show that almost all teenagers have several of these SnapStreaks going with several friends simultaneously… so the time they spend on Snapchat is exponentially multiplied in order to continue their communication streaks. Teenagers will even give up to 5 friends their Snapchat passwords so that when they’re away from their phones for more than a day, someone else can keep the streaks alive.
We have a temptation to think this trend is just new wrapping on an old present. We tell ourselves it’s just like the same way we used to gossip on the telephone back in the 80’s. The difference is back then there weren’t 100 engineers on the other side of the phone who knew exactly how your psychology worked and who were leveraging that knowledge to increase the time you spent on the phone.
If this makes you outraged, notice that feeling just came over you. We don’t choose outrage; it just happens to us. And these companies know outrage is an excellent way to gain attention and increase screen time. If you’re Facebook or a similar social platform, you actually benefit from outrage… because it spreads exponentially from one person to another and doesn’t need additional effort from Facebook to increase attention and screen time. We all unknowingly act as Facebook’s best advertiser by sharing our outrage over such-and-such with others, who in turn, now have their attention locked on Facebook. Then they share with others and so on and so on.
But here’s the insidious problem and why you should care…
These engineers aren’t accountable to us. They’re accountable to the companies who task them with maximizing our attention. Of course, folks at Google and Facebook aren’t bad people. Certainly there’s an intent to help create a better world, but there’s also this race to the bottom where we’re all trying to garner attention and it seems the only way to get more attention is to cater to our lower impulses … outrage, emotion, lower and lower into the lizard brain.
Thought leader Tristan Harris said in order to fix this, we must acknowledge that we’re being manipulated. Once we understand we’re subtly being persuaded to use blocks of time and attention on things that we didn’t chose to think about, society will naturally want to use that understanding and protect against negative manipulation. Once we acknowledge the hidden persuasion, we can focus on the only form of ethical persuasion that exists – which is when the goals of the persuader and persuadee are aligned.
Second, we need new accountability systems so that, as these media and marketing methods get more persuasive (because they will), the people designing these algorithms are accountable and transparent.
There’s no bigger problem today that controlling what we spend our attention on and what we care about. At the end of the day, all we have is our time and attention. Let’s take it back.
