In fact, none exists at all.

So I am not surprised when smart professionals like Mr. Tony Benjamin ask, “Victoria, where am I supposed to add my speaking experience?”

I am surprised that LinkedIn™ has failed to seize upon this obvious need among its members by providing a Speaker Experience addition. After all, they have provided for Projects, Languages, Honors…heck, even Patents has its own spot!

LinkedIn™ spends a lot of money and time convincing us the company is cutting-edge, the leader in this space.

Videos abound of the company’s Google-cool culture and environment.

Its founder (now figurehead) Reid Hoffman has authored several books preaching the gospel of The Brand You.

LinkedIn™’s own collateral materials insist the profile is so much more than a digital resume.

Those of us who speak about LinkedIn™ and teach others to use the platform are not just helping ourselves – we’re freely promoting this powerful platform, enthusiastically empowering new or dormant members to spend more time on the site and use it more fully (something LI very much wants.)

And yet the profile remains a bastion to traditional employment experience, failing to embrace the real needs of today’s entrepreneurial professionals, many of whom are increasingly ditching their 9-5s for more creative pursuits.

Here, then, are 5 ways others are creating workarounds to this issue:

1. I created an entry in the Jobs & Experiences section. Instead of a job title, I have written “Professional Speaker, All Things LinkedIn”, and opted to list upcoming (and very recently past) speaking engagements. When someone asks, “Do you have a list?” I can quickly point him here. (I also maintain a CV going back several years.)

2. Some members use the headline to promote their speaking abilities, and forego any particular listings of dates and titles.

4. Many create an area within the Summary itself, using a capped headline to delineate, and listing speaking experience and engagements here.

5. Others try to force their speaking experience to fit within Honors & Awards or other ancillary sections
