Potions are a type of Magic Item used to boost certain aspects of gameplay for a short period. Each type of Potion can boost a specific aspect of the gameplay.

Potions vs Books
Books are used to instantly finish an ongoing upgrade, while Potions will boost something for a short period.
There are currently 6 types of Potions on the game:
Obtaining Potions
Potions randomly appear at the Shop to be purchased with real money on special Packs. Potions will also occasionally appear at the Daily Discounts barrack where they can be bought with Gems.
However, you can still obtain Potions without spending money or Gems. They are constantly awarded on Clan Games or special events and can always be purchased at the League Shop using Gems. This is how most people get them.
Builder Potion
“Brewed by the Builder in case of emergency all-nighters, this invigorating potion allows your builders to work 10x faster for 1h. Works in Home Village!”
The Builder Potion boosts the player’s Builders in the Home Village for 1 hour. All Builders will work ten times as fast as normal, each one gaining a total of 9 hours.
This Potion applies only to the builders on your Home Village, including the Master Builder if he is gearing up a defense over there.
It can be purchased for 285 Gems or 15 League Medals and sold for 10 Gems.
Clock Tower Potion
“This thick elixir made from ground-up magic cogs activates your Clock Tower boost for 30minutes. Works in Builder Base.”
This Potion activates the Clock Tower on your Builder Base for 30 minutes.
It can be purchased for 75 Gems and sold for 10 Gems.
Hero Potion
“Temporarily add up to +5 levels to all Heroes for 1h. Temporary levels cannot exceed the maximum level determined by the Town Hall level.”
This potion instantly adds 5 levels to your Heroes for 1 hour. However, the upgrade is capped by the current limit level of the specific Hero by available on your Town Hall.
Boosted Heroes will show a purple number.
It can be purchased for 300 Gems and sold for 10 Gems.
Power Potion
“This strong-smelling magical brew can boost your troops and spells to the maximum level allowed by your Laboratory for 1h. Works in both villages!”
The Power Potion instantly upgrades all troops and spells to their max level allowed on the current Laboratory or Star Laboratory. It lasts for 1 hour it’s not applied to Heroes. It can be used on Clan Wars and Clan War Leagues.
It can be purchased for 75 Gems and sold for 10 Gems.
Research Potion
The Research Potion is the culmination of Wizardly and Goblin alchemical experimentation. They got a telescope, a microscope, an oscilloscope, and a stethoscope and did approximately 45 minutes of hard molecular and arcane science. After a rather loud and ominous explosion, the Research Potion was the accidental result of these…efforts.
This new Magic Item has the power to increase the laboratory research time by 10x an hour and will be released on the June 2019 update.
Resource Potion
“A haste spell turned into a potion, this magical elixir can greatly boost your resource collector efficiency for 1d. Works in Home Village.”
The resource potion boosts the production of all Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors and Dark Elixir Drills for 1 day. Works only on the Home Village. It has the exact same effect of boosting them with Gems.
It can be purchased for 115 Gems or 10 League Medals and sold for 10 Gems.
Training Potion
“This energetic elixir boosts your army production, increasing efficiency of barracks, spell factories and hero regeneration. Works in Home Village.”
The Training Potions boosts all Army Buildings for one hour. Has the exact same effect of boosting the buildings with Gems, but with a single Potions, all Army Buildings will be boosted at once: Barracks, Dark Barracks, Spell Factory, Dark Spell Factory, and all the Hero altars. Works only on Home Village.
It can be purchased for 25 Gems and sold for 10 Gems.
New Magic Item: Super Potion
The Super Potion is a brand new Magic Item that lets you boost a Super Troop instead of spending the required Dark Elixir. Each Super Potion will boost a Super Troop for 3 days. Super Potions will be available as a reward from Clan Games, and will also sell at the Trader for 300 Gems.

Supercell introduced the Builder Potions in Clash of Clans March 2018 Update. Ever since then there has been a debate on whether Builder potions are worth their cost of 285 gems or is there any better way to give a boost to builders.

You can get builder potions in 4 ways –
From Daily Deals – Builder Potions are readily available in the daily deals section every other day. One Builder Potion costs 285 gems.
From League Shop – If you compete in Clan war Leagues then you can earn league medals every season. You can use these league medals to buy various magic items. One of them is the builder potion. In the League shop, it is stated that one builder potion will cost 30 League medals.
If your clan wins the clan war league then each participating member will get around 175 to 300 clan war league medals. Additionally, you can get extra 50-75 league medal bonuses. Clan leader (and co-leader) gives these bonuses to best-performing players.

This means that your overall league medals can range from anywhere between 150 to 300 medals. Thus you can buy around 10 builder potions using 300 medals.
From Events – COC is famous for introducing new qualifier challenges and missions every month. A magic item is rewarded for each Challenge completion. Several times it is Builder Potion.
From Monthly Seasons – The popularity of Clash of Clans touched new heights after it introduced monthly seasons like RPG games. Each week the season provides new challenges to players. Upon completion of every challenge, you get rewards points.
You need to achieve 2600 points to get all the rewards available in the related season. A Builder potion is one of the most common items that are among those rewards.

Earlier it used to give one hour at a time. But Supercell confirmed on twitter that you can use all 5 builder potions at once giving you a 50 hour speed.
Are Builder Potions Worth 285 Gems?
Now that we have understood the math of builder potions lets a look at their economic value. To understand if builder potions are worth it, you have to understand how you are getting them.
Let’s assume that you have all 5 builders unlocked. Now after purchasing the builder potion for 285 gems you are in short buying 45 hours’ worth of bonus time. It is equal to 1 day and 21 hours.
You will need to spend 270 gems to free one builder for the same period (i.e. 45 hours). In my opinion, it is not worth it to buy builder potions from daily deals unless you have 6 builders or you need to speed up the upgrade.
However, You can also use hammer of building on town hall to get instant upgrade.
If you are earning builder potion by completing any limited-time event then it is surely worth it. If you are buying builder potions for clan war league medals then also these potions are worth it.
I have found builder potions from season rewards the best trade.
You can buy a gold pass that costs less than $8 and you can earn multiple builder potions from it. Also, your builder time and upgrade cost is reduced significantly.
Overall you are getting the best deal if you are getting builder potion from Season Rewards.
