4 Things To Know Before You Buy A Wingsuit
Talk to any great wingsuit instructor and they’ll agree: The first and worst mistakes that most new wingsuit pilots make are mistakes they make on the ground. And pretty much all of those mistakes have to do with gear.
You might be surprised to know that lots of brand-new wingsuit pilots rock up to a first jump course wearing their very own wingsuit. Often, they’re wearing a brand-new (and spend-AY) beginner wingsuit that they’ll grow out of before they can say “I’ll never get into the jump wearing this.” Less often (but more alarmingly), students will turn up in a used wingsuit that’s wa-hay-HAY too advanced for them. Even if you think you’re being a smart cookie and buying a used wingsuit that’s skills-appropriate and fits you reasonably well, we’re here to tell you there’s a better way:
Just rent it.
Seriously.
Here are four reasons why we’re right.
1. Wingsuits cost serious money.
A new beginner wingsuit will set you back about $1,200. That’s, like, fifty jumps, man. Right now, you need those jumps, because steady, procedural, consistent training is the only thing that’s going to allow you to grow in the discipline.
2. Fit is key.
When you decide on a wingsuit to call your own, you really need it to fit you properly. If you decide not to spend that aforementioned $1,200 and to pick up a used wingsuit from the dropzone corkboard or an online classified post, it’s almost guaranteed that the fit will be somewhere between “ridiculously poor” and “almost-there.” That ill-fitting suit may feel more-or-less okay when you do your obligatory starfish Facebook photo in the living room, but in the sky it’ll be a clenchingly different story.
3. Borrowing a wingsuit is not a great idea.
For much the same reason, borrowing a wingsuit from a buddy isn’t the best way forward. First of all, let’s talk about what you’re trying to accomplish: starting from zero (because let’s face it, you are) and learning to skilfully fly a “stump-winged, low efficiency, high drag lifting body platform” (thanks, Rich Webb). You need full access to your training materials: very specifically, a wingsuit. You can’t be borrowing suits here and there and expecting to learn what you need to learn with any efficiency.
4. There are a lot of options out there, and you need the right one.
There’s only one way to know which wingsuit is right for you–by jumping it. Preferably, you’ll jump it a bunch of times before you make a decision. By renting a suit from us, you have access to a solid arsenal of suits from which to choose, and you can hang onto them until you’re darn well ready.

The video caused a stir, thanks to the beauty of the flight over this peak. The incredible footage calls to mind William Wharton’s quote above. The Weisshorn is one of the highest 4,000’ers in the Pennine Alps, north of Matterhorn and northwest of Zermatt. In particular, you can see how close the flyer was gliding to the sides of the canyon at the bottom of the mountain.
It is not the first time that the Soul Flyers have shared their love of this type of flying. On other occasions, they whizzed past the tops of the Egyptian pyramids and glided down the Eiger.
The most dangerous sport in the world
Wingsuiters typically jump either from an aircraft or from a cliff. They resemble a bat or flying squirrel, with membranes between the arms, body, and legs. They also, of course, have a parachute. During the descent under the canopy, the pilot unzips the arm wings to be able to pull the toggles that control the parachute’s direction.
Wingsuiting is an advanced skill that takes many hours of experience to do it relatively safely. But even for the experts, anything unforeseen or a minor miscalculation is frequently fatal.
How this crazy, exhilarating sport began
Austrian-French tailor Franz Reichelt was an inventor and parachuting pioneer. He was the first to carry out a wingsuit jump, wearing a combination of a parachute and wings. Reichelt had asked for a special permit to jump from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On a cold February 4, 1912, at 7 am, the 33-year-old Reichelt launched himself from the first platform of the tower. His parachute failed to deploy, and Reichelt died immediately when he crashed to the ground.
The dangers
One of the most frequent accidents occurs when the wingsuit flyer hits the tail of the aircraft during launch. This happens very frequently. Also, when several flyers are in the air in close proximity, it is important not to interfere with the airflow of the others. This can cause turbulence and a high-speed crash.
When the wingsuit flyer jumps from a cliff, the first seconds are critical to gain stability and pick up speed for greater control. At any time, the wind can abruptly change direction, or the jumpers may miscalculate how close they have swooped to the side of a mountain. This all happens in a thousandth of a second.
Even BASE jumping is unavoidably dangerous. The list of deaths grows every month. There are many accidents every year, and practically all of them are fatal.
Since 1981, more than 400 people have died, many of them during wingsuit flights. The death rate for wingsuiting is an astonishing 1 death per 500 jumps. The most recent tragedy occurred just days ago in the Julian Alps. Bad weather has grounded rescuers for the time being, though it is not a rescue but a body retrieval.
The famous free solo climber and BASE jumper Dean Potter and his partner Graham Hunt died in 2015 during an illegal wingsuit jump in Yosemite. The pair crashed after launching from Taft Point at an altitude of 2,300m. In 2011, Potter achieved what was then the longest flight for wingsuit BASE jumping (7.5 km). He was also the first to BASE jump with a dog, his Australian cattle dog named Whisper.
The unforgettable Valery Rozov combined BASE jumping and wingsuiting with mountaineering. He had more than 10,000 jumps in his career, many of them spectacular. He flew from an active volcano in Kamchatka, from Mount Ulvetanna in Antarctica, from 6,275m Huarascan, from Cho Oyu from 7,700m, and from the North Face of Everest at 7,220m.
In 2004, Rozov and his climbing partners opened a new route on the west face of 5,800m Amin Brakk in the Karakorum. Rozov then BASE jumped from the top.
He died in November 2017 jumping in a wingsuit from Ama Dablam. After a bad launch, he fatally hit a ledge.

In the spirit of progression, we highly encourage goal setting as you progress. The initial certification is closely monitored by instructors until you’ve graduated. However, the next steps fall on your shoulders. Next steps: 50-200 jumps
This is a make-it-or-break-it-time for many new jumpers. You’ll begin to realize how skydiving will encompass many factors in your life. That’s why this map gives you a clear picture on goal setting, pacing your progression, and eventually earning the goal of wingsuit skydiving.
There is no particular path to follow in this stage, so we’ve created a robust outline with an emphasis on skills to help you become a well-rounded body pilot and prepare to jump a wingsuit.
Jumps 50-150
Try a New Discipline: Freeflying
With a qualified mentor, coach or load organizer, experiment with the freefly discipline. This is a three-dimensional body position flying on your back, upright, and head down. This offers you an opportunity to learn a different axis of body flight to gain better body awareness that will benefit your wingsuiting skills.
Continue Working on the B-License Requirements

Have Fun
Being a new jumper is about having fun learning a new skill, exploring what you like, and of course, having fun! Fun things to look forward to at this level….

Perfect your tracking skills – working on speed, flattening your angle of attack, levels, turns, and stability being mindful of other jumpers on the load. Also jumping in small groups to work on relativity as well as practicing the deployment sequence as you would for a wingsuit to develop muscle memory. Pro Tip: getting a coach helps accelerate this phase!
Learn about wingsuit gear – the next step after this phase is utilizing the tracking suit and once you progress from there, you’ll need to learn about the different containers available for wingsuiting (such as one with dynamic corners), pilot chute size and bridle length and the FlySight (a GPS device used for skydiving)
Jumps 150-200
This is the phase where you move towards working on your next license which for the US, is the C-license. This encompasses working on group jumps which helps you progress your freefall skills that will translate to wingsuiting, as well as canopy landing accuracy which is fundamental for every skydiver.
Again, there is no defined path, so this is our suggested progression, which is the final leg towards the goal of learning to wingsuit skydive.
Jumps 150-199
Working on C-License Requirements – don’t hold yourself back! You can start working on the freefall and canopy landing requirements for your C-license while you rack up your jump numbers. By doing this, you’ll be one step ahead by the time that magical 200 jump number arrives! See more here on how to earn your C-license !
Level up your tracking skills – at this phase utilize a coach to understand more fundamental body control while tracking as well as learning better techniques for spotting, navigating, different body positions for exiting then progressing to barrel rolls while tracking and learning how to back track
Try a New Discipline: Canopy Relative Work (CrW) – this is a discipline that will help you feel more knowledgeable and confident under your wing, especially if you intend to learn to B.A.S.E. jump later in your career.
Jumps 200+
Camera Briefing – at this phase you are able to start wearing a video recording device such as a GoPro.
Take a First Flight Course [FFC] – this is the step where you will do about a 1-2 hour ground training session to cover the following:

How to exit
Navigation
Pull sequence
Emergency Procedures
There is no defined progression in wingsuiting. It is based on the coach and the student being able to demonstrate fundamental skills before progressing to solo wingsuit jumps or trying different types of wingsuits.

Getting to Know Wingsuit Equipment
This is a very exciting but sometimes overwhelming step as today – unlike a decade or so ago – are very many different types of wingsuits as well as wingsuit manufacturers, and used gear available. Wingsuits have gone through a massive evolution and are now being perfected by wingsuit pilots around the globe. It’s a very exciting time to be learning!
Manufacturers now identify wingsuits categories from beginner, intermediate and advanced. This is the level of performance the suit will have for the capabilities for a person new to the discipline. There is a rabbit hole of information when it comes to wingsuiting. The best resources are always first – your coach or mentor. YouTube videos are not instructional methods as they are not tailored to YOU or YOUR experience level, and they are not chronological for a comprehensive progression.
However, it is nice to have some platform to connect with like-minded wingsuit pilots, learn about gear, do more personal research so we’ve listed a few reputable sources:

We all see the amazing death-defying videos of jumpers flying over mountains soaring off of cliffs in beautiful areas – in fact, that may be why you’re here – to learn skydiving in order to wingsuit B.A.S.E.
What Differs From Wingsuit Skydiving and Wingsuit B.A.S.E.?
Wingsuit skydiving is jumping a wingsuit from a plane (helicopter or balloon), wearing a dual parachute system. B.A.S.E. is an acronym that stands for objects jumped from using a single parachute system standing for: Building, Antenna, Span (like a bridge), and Earth.
A Word of Caution
We do, however, have to do our due diligence to warn you about the dangers of not only skydiving here but also wingsuit B.A.S.E. jumping.
There is no organization to standardize safety, licensing, or progression. It is highly recommended if you still want to continue to learn to B.A.S.E. jump, that you do so under the guidance of an experienced coach or mentor at many phases during your B.A.S.E. progression.
B.A.S.E. Progression
So how does one progress to wingsuit B.A.S.E. jumping? First, learning how to skydive. These skills are the best platform to learn fundamental exit positions and canopy flight that are essential to B.A.S.E. jumping. Here is the suggested progression outline:
Learn to Skydive
Accumulate 150 jumps focused on exits and canopy control
Take a First Jump Base Course (FJBC)
Ultimate Skydiving Adventures IAD solo student progression focuses on those two B.A.S.E. jumping fundamentals and are an excellent introduction into the sport of skydiving. And where does one take a FJBC? Ultimate Skydiving Adventures also has B.A.S.E. FJBC Instructors, however, there are also several courses run worldwide, year-round.
Again there is no syllabus or official progression so these are suggestions. Note that everyone’s athletic ability, commitment, and progression may need different training.
Costs
This is a big question and the upfront answer may seem daunting. Please note that this will not be an upfront cost. Skydiving centers, including Ultimate Skydiving Adventures, offer packages to learn to skydive, and to experienced jumpers for a discounted rate.

You can save money by purchasing qualified used equipment (instead of renting gear), and packing for yourself (instead of hiring a packer). These costs do not include: additional coaching, higher jump ticket prices, or travel.
