How To Read Your Astrocartography Chart — Two Wander

Beyond this, there are four main sensitive points in Astrology that will also come into play. These are:

The Midheaven (MC) line: This is your vocation, calling, sense of purpose, or aspects relating to career. It represents the highest point of your chart. So a Jupiter MC line would be extremely professionally beneficial!

The Imum Coeli (IC) line: This is the bottom of your chart and represent your sense of home, where you belong, family, roots, and ancestry. A Moon IC line will be extremely soothing and naturally comforting.

The Ascendant (AC) line: This is your default expression, how you show up in the world, it represents the Sign that was rising on the Eastern horizon at the moment you were born and is also how you come across as to others. It is a very important piece to your Natal puzzle (along with your Sun and Moon Sign). A Sun AC line can show us places where we can peel back the layers to a more authentic self, a Venus AC line can bring a sense of beauty to our identity.

The Descendant (DC) line: This is your key interactions with others, how you are in relationships, what your require from them and who you attract. A Uranus DC line can bring exciting people into our lives but can also be unsettling in the long term.

Bringing all these aspects together, you can start to form a picture and link them together. For example, if your Venus Midheaven line falls near Paris, you may love living here and always find it beneficial for your career or sense of purpose. If it is also crossed by your Pluto or Saturn line, great change and transformation can come about but not without struggles.

If Chiron is here instead, it may feel extra nourishing for you, especially if your IC Moon line is here too, you may feel like you’ve always belonged here. If you’re planning a vacation and want a light-hearted fun vibe, you can look to a location where the Sun, Venus or Jupiter aspect your AC line.

Some other examples from my personal life include arriving in a spot where my Sun line is (Bali) and immediately feeling like myself and that I could really step into my fullest expression. My Venus line crossing where my family are from in Italy, and this place always being very dear to my heart. A place in Croatia where my Chiron line fell being very healing for me when we lived there, and my birth place (London) have no lines crossing it and me feeling no affinity for the UK!

In the same place as above where my Pluto line falls, my husband Sam has his Mars line, and it made him frustrated and angry there! And he is someone who never gets annoyed and has the patience of a saint haha, after 9 years together it was one of the few times I had ever see him get mad. He also has his Neptune line crossing the UK (where he is from) and has always had a confusing relationship with it.

However, full disclosure: I also lived in Paris and enjoyed my time there but have no lines anywhere near it, so that’s not to say you HAVE to have a line somewhere to appreciate it, it’s just that those that do may be more influential for you. Also, of course, the lived experience will always be different. When we are not near any major lines, there are always the parans as well, i.e. the same latitude of other line crossings that bring their influence.

When you have several lines crossing a place, their influence will be blended. Generally the stronger ones will be felt first, and that are more prominent in your own Chart, with the others showing themselves over time.

You can also incorporate elements of these places without ever actually going there. If, for example, you’ve always been drawn to Morocco and have now discovered a significant line crossing it but can’t travel there, you can buy some authentic Moroccan pottery or tapestries; learn how to cook Moroccan food from local chefs; listen to traditional Moroccan music or watch films; learn about its history; make friends with Moroccan people etc (of course if you are drawn to a place and don’t have a line crossing it you can still always learn about and engage in its culture)- the reason you feel called to places are often not by chance!

The benefits of an Astrocartography line do not have to be lived on to be experienced. In business, it can be beneficial to connect with clients or target markets along your MC lines, for example.

Astrocartography: The Best Places to Travel or Relocate Based on Your Map

Never before have we had the ability to travel to new countries as easily as we do today. While we are still sadly living during these weird pandemic times, hopping on a plane to go to a new place halfway around the world is still something our grandparents couldn’t fathom!

And thanks to Jim Lewis, who discovered astrocartography in the 1970s and coined / trademarked the term, we now can plan to relocate or travel to places that would most beneficially serve us on an energetic, soul level.

I’ve been studying birth charts and astrology for over ten years, but it wasn’t until after I lived on four different planetary lines across the globe from San Diego to NYC, Egypt to Bali and Virginia and then ultimately France in 2018. It was while living in France on my Venuc IC line that my interest for reading natal charts very quickly turned to an exciting, small niche in astrology, that most captivated my love for travel: astrocartography.

What is Astrocartography?

Astrocartography is the astrology of place.

Originally known as locational astrology, it’s also known as relocation astrology and astro-locality. My preferred astrology website Astro.com calls it “astro click travel.” I like to call it “astrogeography” because the name astrocartography is trademarked.

Based on your natal chart in astrology, there is a map that corresponds to where the different planets were at different points on the map at the specific time you were born.

Just as there are supportive planets and challenging planets, there are more supportive and challenging places in the world for you.

I follow the stoic notion that nothing in life is good or bad; things are either preferable or unpreferable, but certainly some places in the world hold more challenging energies for us.

The challenging places (Mars, Saturn, Pluto) are areas of growth. Venturing to planetary lines that are more difficult are areas to learn lessons and focus in on those particular energies in our lives.

Reading an Astrocartography Map

When you pull up your astrocartography map, by going to astro.com < astro click travel, you’ll find that your map is covered in longitudinal lines. The closer you are to a line, the closer you feel the energy of that planet. Even if you aren’t directly on a planetary line, you’ll still feel the orb of influence of that line up to 400 miles. Vibrationally, the energy lessons the farther you move away from the planetary line. There are also crossing points when longitudinal and latitudinal lines cross and points that target on a specific point on your astrocartography map. When planetary lines are close or are directly crossing one another, they create an entity. When multiple lines are together, they tell a deeper story. I’ve been studying astrology for 12 years and astrocartography for four years and now offer astrogeography readings to suit your personal needs and interests, as well as to dive deeper into your unique soul’s history in the world. You can learn more about my offerings here, but let’s get back to understanding your map! Steps to Uncovering Your Astrocartography Map First, understand the meaning of the planetary archetypes. Each planet has a positive and a negative side. I’ve included some basic keywords down at the bottom of this blog post. Learn the relationships between planets and understand how certain planetary energies work together. Research the angles and their meanings (scroll down to ready more) If you want to improve a certain area of life (find love, have success in your public work, spiritual growth, creative inspiration, retire, buy a home or an ideal place to start a family), look up the planet that it rules and then find that point on the map. (ex: home and belonging = natal moon / 4th house or love = venus or 7th house, romance 5th house) Most importantly, look at your natal chart. Determine the sect of your chart (is Mars or Saturn more unpreferable for you? Is Jupiter or Venus your happiest planet?) and look to the moon – where you do find nourishment in your life? Career and/or Family on your Astrocartography Map As a general rule of thumb (look to your natal chart for specifics), for career and public success of recognition, you want to ideally move to a Jupiter MC or a Sun MC. Venus Descending lines are especially supportive for creative artists and also for getting recognition from others for artistic endeavors. If you’re looking for a peaceful home and family life, Jupiter IC, Moon IC or Venus IC is lovely (I currently live on a Venus IC line in France). Tips for Understanding the Lines on Your Astrocartography Map When lines are directly on top of each other, such as on an intersection, they merge to tell a more nuanced and detailed story of a person’s life there. You don’t want to live in a place where there are too many lines; it’s just far too much energy for one to take in. If there are no lines around a place, that means the energy in that place isn’t supportive or challenging. It’s a respite of sorts, but it also translates to no growth or expansion. Personally, I think it’s better to travel or relocate to a more supportive planetary line to receive the maximum benefit. Learning Astrology and Astrocartography Astrology is complicated. It’s not as simple as knowing your sun, moon or rising sign. We are so much more than just our rising sign. We many planets telling a story in our natal chart. How you communicate with others (mercury) may not appear anything like your sun sign. There are various houses (areas of life), rulers of planets and aspects that tell a deeper story of how the planets relate to one another. It’s always important for me to note that astrology is a system of correlations; it’s not causal. The stars don’t cause us to do things or tell us to behave in a certain way. Rather, astrology is a reflection, a window of your karmic unfolding. Astrology is a language, and when you begin to study the language of astrology, you start to understand the symbols, the glyphics, the lines and their meanings. Reading a full chart can then be like reading a book of a person’s life…which is why I love zodiacal releasing – an ancient Hellenistic timing technique that divides a person’s life into positive and challenging “peak periods” which can help with planning purposes. Essentially, astrology is the language of life. If you don’t speak the language, of course, you’re not going to understand it. But by working one-on-one with astrologers, reading books (I recommend this one to get started learning the basics) or learning the basic planets/aspects, which I’ve included down below, astrology can be easily learned with time and dedication. Astrology isn’t a psychic or intuitive practice. It’s simply looking at what the chart says and simply acting as a messenger. Book an Astrogeography Reading with Me I love studying the chapters and places of a person’s destiny. And I’m far more fascinated by other people’s charts than my own. That’s why I love giving client readings. I’ve been passionately studying astrology for over 12 years but I uniquely specialize in astrogeography (or travel and relocation astrology) and zodiacal releasing as travel and time / life chapter are my favorite topics to explore in a person’s life biography. As a storyteller and seeker, I feel most at home uncovering the truth within a chart. And I’m so thrilled to be sharing what I’ve learned with you. Don’t Know Where to Live Next? Astrocartography Can Help You Make Your Next Move

You already get your daily notifications from the astrology app Co-Star and know exactly when Mercury will be in retrograde, but there’s a lesser-known piece of astrology that you might want to look into. It’s called astrocartography—or astrogeography—and it might just change the way you travel or decide where to move to.

What is astrocartography?

Essentially, astrocartography is how the placements of the planets affect the energies we feel in certain places we live or visit, depending on when and where we were born. While the idea of locational astrology was not new, in the 1970s astrologer Jim Lewis took these complex theories and boiled them down into a map of locations by working with angular planets. These are planets located along the axis and fall between two houses. Astrocartography could explain why you’re dying to take a solo trip to Bali or were drawn to Florence when you chose to study abroad. For example, where the 12th house joins the 1st house—aka rising planets—and why you’d be a rising Aquarius if Uranus appears here during your birth.

According to astrologer and astrocartography expert Elizabeth Smith, in addition to showing one’s angular planets and aspects, astrocartography uses something called parans or crossings, which is information on how we’re astrologically affected by places that are at the same latitude as wherever we are in the world that affects the energies we feel. For instance, the rising Aquarius mentioned earlier would feel the energy of Uranus and will often make more spontaneous choices as part of their personality.

“Astrocartography is the only form of astrology that you can find these parans—and they’re spot on. It’s like the missing link [to what you’re looking for],” she says. “In addition to being a fabulous relocation tool, it’s a great healing tool for whatever people are being forced to deal with in their present location.”

If you’ve been feeling stuck in your career, you could use astrocartography to find a line that hones in on your ambition, like a Mars midheaven line (more on that later). Likewise, if you find that you live somewhere with negative energy like one that could leave with a disruption of family (the Saturn lower midheaven line), you can use this information to work through any struggles you’re currently having—or plan to move if it permits.

How does astrocartography work?

Before Lewis developed the art of astrocartography, astrologers would create maps by hand. These days, you just need to input your birth date, time, and location to get your basic map and see your lines across the globe.

When you first see your map, it might look like a series of confusing lines—but trust me, they all mean something. If you want to get into the nitty-gritty of what everything means, it’s best to see an astrocartographer who can give you deeper insights and help you map out a game plan on how to incorporate it into your life. Otherwise, you could be wasting a ton of time and money moving to a line you thought looked appealing on your chart.

“If you’re going to use it, you need to have a holistic understanding—astrologically speaking—of that place,” Smith says “You use the line [you want] to get you started and then you zoom in. There’s a lot more going on there than what you see.”

Each line links up with a certain celestial body that brings out certain qualities like love, creativity, and growth within up to 700 miles of that line. According to Smith, this is known as the orb of influence. Keep in mind that every planet has a dark or light potential energy, depending on other aspects of your personal chart. To get an idea of what you’re seeking out, here’s the gist of the energy each planet brings out:

Sun: This line is essentially your ego and self-realization, where you can truly find your best self.

Four lines represent each planet’s energy with a slight twist: Midheaven (MC), Lower Midheaven (IC), Point of Ascendant (AC), and Point of Descent (DC). The midheaven line has some of the strongest influence to impact you socially and in your career, while the lower midheaven brings your sense of belonging to the world impacting home, family, and community relationships. Similarly, the Ascendant is how you present yourself whereas the Descendant is what you attract and experience through others.

For example, my Venus midheaven line goes right through Maine, which is good for honing in on my creative energy, manifesting fame, and receiving financial rewards. I could potentially become a wilderness influencer here or rent a cabin to write the next Great American Novel. I’m fine with either option.

For most people looking for ease, pleasure, and low-stress levels, Smith says to look at the Sun, Jupiter, and Venus points as they tend to bring harmony or ease into our lives. She does warn that just because a line looks ideal on paper, doesn’t mean it’s exactly what it seems, as other negative energies nearby could outweigh the benefits. For example, my Saturn Descendant, which typically leads to a reevaluation of relationship, meets my Chiron Ascendant, an area where one typically understands themselves, in Michigan. While both changes could be good for me in the long run, together it could be too much stress and change for me to handle. It varies from chart to chart, so you’re going to want to study yours closely.

How to harness a line’s energy without traveling:

While determining where you should travel to is all fine and dandy, these days, most of us aren’t going anywhere. But thankfully, as Smith explains, unlike physical form, energy is not limited to space and can be felt remotely. This means you can feel the energy of the planet if you get close to someone who was born in the location.

“In other words, your astrocartography line in Paris will come to you by being in Paris, but it will oftentimes come to you if you start working in a cubicle next to someone who was born in Paris because your energetic fields are intertwined,” Smith says.

This could also be a new way to approach dating, as Smith explained that one of her clients whose Venus Descendant was through London but had no desire to move there. But she met her now-husband who was born in the city on a dating website. It makes you rethink what your current location is set as on Bumble.

Aside from people, Smith believes empathic or sensitive individuals can feel these energies through objects like having pottery from Morocco or listening to music from Spain. You can also pull energies from more prosperous lines like a Sun Midheaven line that brings good fortune to your career by doing business with those who live there.
