How Much Commission Does Airbnb, Expedia and Booking.com Take (+ Others)

Are you a hotelier who’s interested in using online travel agents (OTAs) to help fill your rooms? If so, you’ll need to know what commission rates the OTAS charging. In this blog post, we’ll break down the commission rates for some of the most popular OTAs. We’ll also share with you some tips and tricks for negotiating better commission rates.

How do OTAs make money?

OTA’s make money through commission by taking a percentage of the total booking cost from the hotel. The commission rates vary depending on the OTA, but they typically range from 15% to 25%. Some OTAS also charge a commission on extras (such as breakfast or parking), which can add up to an additional few percent. For example, some OTAs charge a commission of 15% on the room rate, plus an additional $0.40 per extra. So, if you’re booking a room that costs $100 per night, with breakfast and parking included, they would take a total commission of $17.40.

What is a OTA commission rate?

A commission rate is the percentage of the total booking cost that an online travel agent (OTA) charges for their services. For example, if an OTA charges a 15% commission on a room that costs $100 per night, the hotelier would pay the OTA $15 for each reservation made through them.

Commission rates can vary widely and are typically negotiable between the OTA and the hotelier. OTAs will often charge higher commission rates for hotels that are in high demand, or for rooms that are difficult to sell.

Some OTAs will also offer discounts on commission rates if the hotelier agrees to certain terms, such as signing a contract or committing to a certain number of bookings.

Hoteliers should compare the commission rates charged by different OTAs before deciding which one to use. It’s also important to consider the other benefits that an OTA can provide, such as increased exposure and marketing support.

Tips on how to negotiate better commission rates with OTAs

There are a few things hoteliers can do to try to get better commission rates from OTAs. First, it’s important to understand what the OTA is looking for in a partner hotel. What kind of occupancy rate does the OTA need to make a profit? What kind of margins are they looking for?

Second, hoteliers should be prepared to offer something in return for a lower commission rate. This could be a contract commitment or a guarantee of a certain number of bookings.

Third, it’s often helpful to have someone else negotiate on your behalf. This could be a professional negotiator, or even just a friend or family member who is good at haggling. Make sure they’re familiar with the structure of OTAs and your business so they can agree on the best deal.

Fourth, don’t be afraid to walk away from the negotiation if you don’t feel like you’re getting a fair deal. Remember, there are other OTAs out there who may be willing to work with you for a better rate.

PRENO TIP

If you plan on listing your property on multiple OTAs we recommend using a PMS that allows you to manage pricing and reservations from within one platform, such as Preno. Preno integrates with 50+ of the most popular OTAs – including all the online travel agents mentioned below.

What are the commission rates for Booking.com?

Booking.com commission rate varies between 10% to 25% depending on the location of your property and your cancellation policy. On average, it is about 15%. To find out more information about the commission rate you will pay, make sure to read their Accommodation Agreement when signing up to their platform.

What are the commission rates for Expedia?

As with Booking.com, Expedia charges a range of commission rates depending on the size of your hotel. Independent hotels tend to pay a 15-30% commission rate, whereas big brands can expect to pay 10-15%. Typically these rates won’t be negotiable unless you’re part of a large hotel chain, such as Marriott which famously did so in 2019.

What are the commission rates for Airbnb?

Airbnb has the lowest commission rate of all OTAs and hosts can expect to typically pay a commission rate of 3-15% per booking subtotal. However, this may vary depending on your location and whether you have a strict no-cancellation policy. Airbnb has kept commission rates low to compete with other OTAs and therefore, guests tend to pay additional fees rather than the hotel or accommodation owner.

What are the commission rates for Trip.com?

If you gain a booking through Trip.com you can expect to be charged a commission rate between 10-25%. Again, this rate fluctuates depending on the size of your hotel and the location. It’s best to talk to a representative to get a better understanding of what commission rate you should expect, and take this opportunity to negotiate a better rate for your property.

What are the commission rates for Agoda?

Agoda sets a commission rate based on your property location (city and country), and this is usually about 15%. Generally, Agoda does not negotiate these rates as they’re standardised across the region, but you can request a lower rate if you have a valid reason to, such as a chain agreement. They also have an option for hoteliers to join their Agoda Growth Express program (AGX) which you can agree to a higher commission rate to appear higher on the Agoda search results, without any additional fees.

What are the commission rates for Hostelworld?

Hostelworld takes a commission every time a booking is made through their website or app and this sits between 10-25%. One bonus of using Hostelworld is that they add this rate to the guests’ booking, so the hotelier won’t be affected.

In conclusion, it’s important to understand the commission rates that OTAs charge as this will directly affect your business. Be sure to do your research and be prepared to negotiate a lower rate if you feel like you’re not getting a fair deal. There are many OTAs out there who are willing to work with you so don’t be afraid to walk away from the negotiation if you’re not happy. Remember, OTAs are a great way to increase bookings and grow your business, but the best way overall to increase revenue is by increasing your direct bookings.

How Does Expedia Make Money and What Fees Does It Charge?

You’ve learned about the basics of Expedia, but you may still have some questions about how it generates revenue. In this article, we’ll explain how Expedia.com makes money, so you know what you’re dealing with when you decide to book with Expedia.

DISCLAIMER Just a heads-up that some of the services we’re reviewing here have affiliate partnerships with us, so we may earn a commission if you visit one of them and buy something. You can read more about how this works at https://techboomers.com/how-to-support-techboomers.

So, how does Expedia earn its profits?

Expedia’s revenue model

Expedia makes the majority of its money through booking accommodations in bulk at a cheap price, and then selling them to their users with a slight markup. Expedia makes a profit off of the increased margin, and also occasionally makes commission fees from hotels increasing their exposure through the Expedia website.

This is the same model used by many travel websites, as they often have the connections necessary to rent out entire blocks of hotel rooms and resort units due to their online marketing and returning user-ship. It also makes money through its many partner websites, which sell reservations in a similar way. It generates some revenue by charging fees for certain circumstances as well, though they avoid doing this in most cases, and so this does not make up a large portion of their revenue.

The Expedia website itself costs no money to use, and neither does signing up for an account. Merely searching for vacation accommodations on the website or app never costs money; you simply need to pay for the total of your accommodations when you confirm your booking.

What kinds of fees does Expedia charge?

Expedia itself doesn’t charge fees for booking accommodations, unless you violate their terms of booking. For example, you may be charged cancellation fees if you cancel your accommodations outside of the standard 24-hour window. Also, because Expedia is partnered with so many other travel accommodations companies, any of these services could potentially charge fees that you may not have been aware of when booking with Expedia.

Some examples of additional fees that users sometimes incur when booking accommodations include:

Cancellation fees for cancelling an accommodation booking more than 24 hours after booking it

Fees for extra or overweight baggage, on certain airlines

Fees for using guest Wi-Fi in a hotel room

Fees for excursions off of a resort

Parking fees for parking at a particular venue

Fees for meals at a hotel (such as breakfast)

Fees for the ability to use facilities at a hotel such as a spa, gym, pool, etc.

To avoid these sometimes hidden fees, be sure to read all of the terms of your accommodations booking on Expedia carefully before completing your transaction. For a complete description of situations in which you may incur fees, read Expedia’s Terms of Use.

Commission of Airbnb, Booking, Expedia, TripAdvisor, HomeAway and TemporadaLivre: How Does It Work?

In Brazil, you have never heard so much about vacation rentals as recently. In fact, a survey released by Booking in November 2017 shows that 34% of Brazilian travelers prefer to stay in a vacation rental (house or apartment) than in a hotel. In addition, 24% of respondents indicated that they would advertise their property on an lodging booking channel.

If you have been realizing the huge potential of this market and have already started investing or are considering entering the sector, this post is very strategic to contribute to your projects and boost your growth. After all, nowadays there are several vacation rental sites, and understanding the commissioning models of each one of them is very important to put into practice strategies that will impact your profitability.

Currently, there are six main platforms that stand out in the country: Airbnb, Booking, Expedia, TripAdvisor, HomeAway and TemporadaLivre. Below you will understand how commission rates work for Airbnb and for each of the other channels that are the responsibility of advertisers. Check out!

Airbnb

Airbnb has already surpassed 140 thousand listings in Brazil. In general, Airbnb charges the advertiser a 3% commission on their booking amount. The final amount is calculated based on the booking subtotal (which does not include taxes and other fees) and is automatically deducted from the payment to be made to the host.

In practice:

If your lodging’s daily rate costs R$100,00, R$3,00 will stay with Airbnb.

Another important detail is that Airbnb also receives a guest service fee, charged based on the price of the lodging. In other words, the property you are offering will be more expensive for the client than the price you previously set.

In addition to the possibility of offering lodgings, nowadays Airbnb offers a space where hosts and other professionals can offer “experiences” to travelers, such as workshops, city tours or other activities related to local culture. In such cases, the Airbnb commission is 20% on the price of the experience. This fee is not charged if the service offered is done in partnership with non-profit organizations.

Tip: if Airbnb allows you to offer experiences in the city where you have lodgings, this is a good way for you to test the space and put the extra services you offer that go beyond the vacation rental.

Note: Currently, the possibility of registering experience is only available to some cities worldwide, including Rio de Janeiro.

Booking

In Brazil, there are more than 30 thousand lodgings advertised on Booking. Hosts that get bookings through the website must pay a 13% commission fee.

In practice:

If the daily rate of your lodging costs R$100,00, R$13,00 will be Booking’s. It is important to know that the commission does not apply on the additional fees that you require (cleaning, for example).

Attention: the commission is paid from an invoice sent by Booking after the guest’s check-in.

HomeAway

The HomeAway group maintains the AlugueTemporada website in Brazil, which has more than 22 thousand listings for lodging in the country. Unlike most vacation rental platforms, to advertise on HomeAway you need to choose a subscription plan that can last 3 or 12 months, there are five categories of plan.

Classic Plan (standard positioning on the website)

Quarterly – R$139,00/Annual – R$559,00

Bronze Plan (receives up to 36% more contacts than in the Classic)

Quarterly – R$189,00

Silver Plan (receives up to 42% more contacts than in the Classic)

Quarterly – R$239,00

Gold Plan (receives up to 84% more contacts than Classic)

Quarterly – R$289,00

Platinum Plan (receives up to 184% more contacts than Classic)

Quarterly – R$439,00

All plans include:

– space for a detailed description of the property;

– location through GoogleMaps;

– possibility to insert 24 photos in high resolution;

– booking center with availability calendar;

– traveler reviews;

– access statistics.

Attention: when making a reservation through HomeAway, there is no commission to pay. Although the price of the plans may seem high, it usually becomes financially cheaper compared to the commissions that are paid to an OTA throughout the year.

Expedia

In 2015 Expedia acquired the HomeAway group, which in Brazil maintains AlugueTemporada. However, through Expedia, financial issues work differently from HomeAway. The hosts work with the payment of commission for bookings and not with a monthly plan, being able to choose one of the following commissioning models:

1) Hotel Collect: when the guest makes the payment to the host themselves. In this case, the commission is 15% for Expedia.

2) Expedia Collect: when the guest makes the payment to Expedia and then the company forwards it to the host. For that, Expedia charges a 20% commission.

In practice:

If the daily rate of your lodging costs R$100,00, for the Hotel Collect model, R$15,00 will stay with Expedia, and R$20,00 if you choose the Expedia Collect model.

Attention: the commission is paid from an invoice sent by Expedia after the guest’s check-in.

TripAdvisor

Since August 2017, TripAdvisor has been able to advertise lodgings directly there, previously it was only possible through FlipKey. For each booking made through TripAdvisor, the host pays a 3% commission fee to the website. The calculation is made based on the total rent, which includes both mandatory and optional rates chosen by the advertiser, such as cleaning, for example.

In practice:

If the daily rate of your lodging costs R$100,00, R$3,00 stays with TripAdvisor.

TemporadaLivre

TemporadaLivre does not charge a commission on bookings, but works with a package. Currently the site has more than 10.000 lodgings throughout Brazil. Unlike HomeAway (AlugueTemporada), the amount paid is only one time, it is not a monthly fee. Owner plans work as follows:

Divulgation of a property for 3 months = R$139,00 (single amount)

Divulgation of a property for 6 months = R$219,00 (single amount)

Divulgation of a property for 12 months = R$299,00 (single amount)

This package includes:

– automatic translation into Spanish and English;

– unlimited photos;

– booking center with availability calendar;

– traveler reviews;

– access statistics.
