Is it dreamed or Dreamt?
Dreamed and dreamt are both acceptable past tense forms of dream. Dreamed follows the pattern of regular verbs, ending with “-ed” while dreamt is irregular. Often the irregular, or “strong,” form of a word gives way and is replaced by the normalized form, but both dreamt and dreamed are still in use.
Which is correct jail or gaol?
A: Both are accepted – but “jail” is preferred. It admits that “in general, the spelling of this word has shifted in Australian English from gaol to jail”. However, it goes on to add that, “gaol remains fossilised in the names of jails, as Parramatta Gaol, and in some government usage”.
Why is gaol Spelt?
Gaol is an outdated spelling that is rarely used.
Both forms have been used over the past few centuries, but today, only jail is commonplace. Since gaol has an O in it, like the words old and outdated, you can use the word’s spelling as a reminder that it is no longer current.
Is the R in iron silent?
The silent R in ‘iron’ in BrE
The reason why the r in ‘iron’ is absent in British English is because the r is followed by a consonant now (followed by /n/ in /’aɪərn/) and British English is non-rhotic, meaning the r is only pronounced when followed by a vowel.
How do you say herb?
The British pronunciation is “Herbs” with an “H” while American pronunciation is “erbs” without the “H.” Quite simple, eh? Just like this simple vinaigrette recipe to go with your herb salad. “Herb” or “erb,” it’s really your choice.
How do you use dreamed and Dreamt in a sentence?
Dreamt and dreamed are both past tense forms of dream. Dreamt is more common in Britain, while dreamed is more common in other English-speaking countries, including the U.S. Dreamed seems to be more popular than dreamt when talking about sleeping, but when dream has a hopeful, literary sense, dreamt might be used.
What is the past tense of sleep?
Slept is the past tense and past participle of sleep.
Is Dreamt the only word that ends with MT?
According to Oxford Dictionaries, ‘dreamt’ is the only English word that ends with ‘mt’. The word’s derivatives including undreamt, daydreamt, and redreamt are the only other words that end with the same letters.

pronunciation: dreamed / dreamt
Being caught somewhere between BE and AE, I hear ‘dremt’ pronounced, but I think most people around here would spell it ‘dreamed’. Read off the page, it would most likely be pronounced ‘dreemd’, but in speaking, the dremt is more prevalent (as far as I can recall).
This is similar to ‘spelled’ vs. ‘spelt’. I always see ‘spelled’ used, but at least some would say ‘spelt’ when speaking, while I think others would say ‘spelled’. These questions I find hard to address because once I start trying to recall what I would normally say, I find myself getting influenced by the question to the point that I can’t be completely certain of any of it. This also has a lot to do with the fact that some favour BE pronunciations, while others use more AE ones. This depends on the person and the particular word.
