- P1c = (PSIa) Absolute Atmospheric Pressure (PSIa) – 1 System Depression.
How much psi of boost is normal?
There’s a wide variation, but back in the ’90’s it was clustered in the 10-12psi range for a typical 4-cyl turbocharged performance model. Nowadays 16-18psi is not abnormal for high performance factory cars.
How do I convert HP to PSI?
- 1 psi = 6894.76 pascals (Pa)
- 1 hPa = 100 pascals (Pa)
- psi value x 6894.76 Pa = hPa value x 100 Pa.
- psi value = hPa value x 0.0145038.
Is 20 pounds of boost a lot?
Most turbochargers stop producing boost after 20 to 25 pounds have been reached, although they are capable of much more. Superchargers, also capable of greater boost numbers, typically build up to a maximum of thirty pounds of boost.
How much hp does Nos add?
If you’re wondering what’s the easiest and cheapest way to add a lot of horsepower to your engine, then we have the answer: nitrous oxide. Yep, for less than $500 you can add 100 to 200 hp to your engine using common hand tools and without breaking a sweat.
How much hp does exhaust add?

For every 1 PSI = to how much HP/Tq increase?
You guys are only telling half the story there though.Yes, from physics we can get to 1 psi = 7% increase in hp,. What turbo or S/C can do that? None can. So now we have to talk about the intercooler method and efficiency of the intercooler in being used… Right back to “it’s different for every setup”Yes, we can also get to 10 degrees cooler = 1% increase in hp,. What intercooler cools the charge without a pressure drop? NoneBack to talking efficiency of the setup again. There can be major changes to these two numbers based on how things are setup, the combination, etc. Useful for planning, I agree, but don’t fret if your actual power numbers aren’t 7%/1% respectively.Take my numbers above. 45hp was about 9-10% on that combo. I did have the intercooler bringing the charge to ambient +10 degrees under normal conditions, and had a fan on it (but no AC duct). I also over cranked the turbo to account for the boost drop from the intercooler.
How much hp/tq would a TURBO with 6 lbs. of boost get????
I read on the Z31 site that if you are not pushing more than 8 psi, the intercooler is not needed. Maybe it’s different for a high compression VQ engine but I don’t know. Also you have to consider the pressure losses of the intercooler. So I guess if you want 6psi at the maf, you gonna have to set the wastegate at 6psi+ ie.. 7.5 or 8psi to compensate for the pressure losses.
Unless someone really knows for sure, it’s not set in concrete that this guy needs larger injectors, large capacity fuel pump or whatever. The 4-5th gen SC’ers are running similar psi w/o injector and pump upgrades so I would think in a general sense, the turbo application would be similar. You may or may not have more heat becuase of the turbo. Whether or not that affects the fuel/timing requirements can’t really be determined until you get it running. If you think your gonna get away with just guessing on the psi, timing and fuel requirements without a full set of guages watching what’s going on, that’s asking for trouble. Your gonna have to get everthing installed and maybe run 3-4 psi and see what the timing is going, see what kind of injector duty is going on and observe what kind of exhaust temps is happening. If it looks okay then raise it to 5 psi and do it again. If something looks fishy, back it down before you damage anything.
But the question is again, why re-invent the wheel? Stillen has already developed a supercharger for the VQ and has done all this for you. If you can only run 6psi, exactly why would anyone want to spend the extra $$ for delevopment? 6psi is 6psi. The engine doesn’t know/care whether it’s coming from a SC or a turbo. Plus in general superchargers run cooler anyway. Upping the boost is easy and even intercoolers are available for the sc(I think) What even more power? Add nos like some have been doing.
It doesn’t make sense to run a turbo system capable of mega hp when your longblock can only handle 4-7 psi anyway.
How Turbochargers Work
The turbocharger is bolted to the exhaust manifold of the engine. The exhaust from the cylinders spins the turbine, which works like a gas turbine engine. The turbine is connected by a shaft to the compressor, which is located between the air filter and the intake manifold. The compressor pressurizes the air going into the pistons.
The exhaust from the cylinders passes through the turbine blades, causing the turbine to spin. The more exhaust that goes through the blades, the faster they spin.
On the other end of the shaft that the turbine is attached to, the compressor pumps air into the cylinders. The compressor is a type of centrifugal pump — it draws air in at the center of its blades and flings it outward as it spins.
This animation shows how air flows through the exhaust manifold, into the turbine, through the exhaust wheel and shaft, through the compressor sections into the air intake manifold and out through the turbo housing. Tyroola/Wikimedia
In order to handle speeds of up to 200,000 rpm, the turbine shaft must be supported very carefully. Most bearings would explode at speeds like this, so most turbochargers use a fluid or hydrodynamic bearing. This type of bearing supports the shaft on a thin layer of oil that is constantly pumped around the shaft. This serves two purposes: It cools the shaft and some of the other turbocharger parts, and it allows the shaft to spin without much friction.
But you can have too much boost. With air being pumped into the cylinders under pressure by the turbocharger, and then being further compressed by the piston, there is more danger of knock. Knocking happens because as you compress air, the temperature of the air increases. The temperature may increase enough to ignite the fuel before the spark plug fires. Cars with turbochargers often need to run on higher octane fuel to avoid knock. If the boost pressure is really high, the compression ratio of the engine may have to be reduced to avoid knocking.
The turbo system may also use an intercooler between the turbocharger and the cylinder. This cools the air before it reaches the combustion chamber, reducing the possibility of knock.
There are many trade-offs involved in designing a turbocharger for an engine. In the next section, we’ll look at some of these compromises and see how they affect performance.
