How to make a beautiful floral tissue paper bow
It’s shower and party season! From Mother’s Day to weddings and birthdays, gift giving is in full swing. Pretty up your next present with a stunning homemade bow that’s almost too nice to undo.
I’m giving away trade secrets here. You know those beautiful floral looking decorations you sometimes see in magazines hovering over a festive table? Or in a kid’s room, re-invented as a mobile? They’re little more than a few sheets of tissue paper and take about ten minutes of your time to create.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create your own pretty decoration:
1. Start with six to ten layers of tissue paper. The more layers you have, the more dense your pom pom will be. You can also vary the colour for a fun, multi-coloured effect.
2. Fold back and forth every inch or so.
3. Keep folding until you have a long strip. Tie at the middle, and trim the ends. For a soft, peony look, round off the edges. For more of a fun, chrysanthemum look, cut into points.
4. Open up the sides (pull them down) so that the flower is semi-flat.
5. Pull the individual layers of tissue paper toward the middle. Be very careful not to tear the paper – cheap tissue paper from the dollar store rips easily! The first layer will pull back almost until it’s perpendicular to the rest of the flower. Keep pulling the paper back (less and less each time) until you have done half of the top (3, 4 or 5 layers). Turn the flower over and repeat on the back.
6. Once the top is done, turn the flower over and repeat the process. You should end up with a round pouf shape.
At this point, you can either tie it onto the top of a gift for a big impression.
Or try hanging it from a ribbon over a Mother’s Day brunch table. It’s also great above a baby’s change table, to keep baby’s eyes busy!
How to make a bow with streamers
The following instructions will make a double bow with long streamers, suitable for trimming a medium-sized to large basket:
1. Cut two strips of fabric, each 8 inches wide and 54 inches long.
2. Set aside the first strip, which will be used for the streamers. Then cut the second strip in half widthwise, to make two strips of 27 inches each. These will be used for the bow’s loops. Then cut a smaller piece, just 3 inches long, from one of the loop pieces. This fourth strip is the connector, which will hold the streamers and larger and smaller loops together in the center of the bow. (See diagram No. 1, page 1C.)
3. Lay the long streamer piece on the work board, with the print side facing upwards, and pour a line of fabric stiffener down the length of the cloth. Spread the stiffener evenly over the fabric with your hands. Then turn the streamer over and repeat on the other side, making sure that the cloth is saturated.

4. Fold each long side of the fabric strip to the center of the strip and crease firmly. The fabric should overlap a bit on the inside. With the hands, press the fabric evenly down its length, smoothing out any wrinkles, air bubbles, and excess stiffener. The result should be a 4-inch wide strip with crisply folded edges. (See diagram No. 2, page 1C.)
5. Hang this strip up to dry, securing its end to a wire coat hanger with a clothespin.
6. Apply stiffener to the other pieces of cloth, and hang up to dry. (Don’t worry if the fabric looks a little cloudy when wet.) The strips should dry for 45 minutes to an hour. They will be ready to work with when they are crisp on the outside, but not so hard they are not flexible. The inside will be a little damp.
7. Remove the streamer strip from the hanger. At the center of this strip, or wherever you would like the bow to be, pinch the sides of the fabric together to make a neat gathered or pleated look. Hold this together with a clothespin, and set aside. (See diagram No. 3, page 1C.)
8. Lay the longer of the two bow strips on the table, seam side up. Bring the ends to the center, overlapping 1 1/2 inches. (See diagram No. 4, page 1C.) Pinch the middle of the bow together neatly. While holding the folds together securely, open up the loops to make a puffy bow. Clip the folds together with another clothespin, while you repeat the process with the smaller bow strip.
9. Put the large bow loop on top of the streamer, with the gathers together, and then add the shorter bow loop on top. Press together firmly at
the center of the gathers.
10. Add a little stiffener to the back seam of the connector piece. Wrap the connector strip tightly around all three pieces, overlap the ends, and trim. Keep the bow clamped together for a few minutes until it’s secure, using a dot of glue if necessary. (See diagram No. 5, page 1C.)

11. Using a glue gun, spread a generous amount of hot glue on the surface to which you will attach the bow. (Be careful — hot glue can burn.) Press the center of the bow into the glue, and hold for about a minute, until the bond is firm. Then shape the streamers into gentle ripples or scalloped folds. (Timing is important: The streamers must still be flexible to bend without cracking, but if they are not dry enough they will droop and fail to hold their shape.) Where the scallops touch the basket, secure them in place with a dot of hot glue.
12. Cut the streamers to size, and finish with a swallow-tailed end.
13. Stuff the loops with rinsed aluminum cans or plastic drinking cups to make them puffy. (Don’t use paper cups, as they will stick to the fabric.) Stuff the ripples in the streamers with soft plastic wrap. These can be kept in overnight, until the project is completely dry.
14. If you like, finish the basket with fabric cutouts. Cut out motifs with sharp scissors, and apply a glue-base decoupage finish such as Mod-Podge to the reverse side. Place the cutout sticky-side down on a basket, and press down firmly with a warm, damp cloth.
15. After about 24 hours, spray the entire project with a clear acrylic spray finish (either high-gloss, or matte for a more old-fashioned look). Make sure the piece is absolutely dry before spraying, or mold can grow underneath the finish. Use several coats, allowing ample drying time between coats.
How to Make a Bow
Learn how to make a bow for wreaths, gifts, Christmas tree toppers, and more. Wreaths are a good idea for decorating your front door.
A gorgeous handmade bow adds a nice touch to your wreath. There are many different ways to make a ribbon bow; however, this one is the easiest. These are perfect for decorating wreaths, Christmas gifts, Christmas trees, lanterns, and more.

What Supplies Do I Need
I adore making bows; however, I remember my first few failed attempts at making them. Since then, I have learned to create many different ribbon bows. Additionally, I enjoy sharing my favorite ways to make a bow; you can find more bow tutorials in my ultimate bow-making guide.
Ribbons
Selecting ribbon is the best part of bow making. There are a ton of different types of ribbons. However, my favorite ribbon to make a bow is wired ribbon since it makes shaping bows super easy. The wire also helps the ribbon bow maintain the shape of both the loops and tails.
I prefer using a wider ribbon of 2 1/2 inches for wreath bows. However, my favorite ribbon for my DIY bows is a wired burlap ribbon.
Zip Tie and Wire
After you “tie” your bow, you will need a zip-tie or a piece of floral wire to hold your bow together. You can also use a chenille stem or pipe cleaner to cinch and hold it together. I like to use a chenille stem that matches the ribbon. Therefore, I keep a variety of colors on hand.
Wire Cutters and Scissors
I like to use sharp scissors and heavy-duty wire cutters (my favorite ones) when making bows and crafting.
How to Make a Bow out of Ribbon
I used a 2 1/2 inch wide wired ribbon to make this simple bow. The first step is determining the bow size you would like to make. Once you know the size, you will make a loop with the ribbon, then loop your ribbon around the first loop two more times. Be sure to start and stop the ribbon circles a little before the center starts and a little after to finish.
Note: The number of loops on each side will be equivalent to the amount of ribbon “circles” you make. In other words, if you make three ribbon circles of ribbon, you will have three loops on each side of your bow.

**Special invitation to join me to get organized in 30 days. It’s so easy to join; fill out the form below, and you are on your way to an organized home.
2. Cut the ribbon off just about an inch past the center.
3. To form the streamer or tails, fold a piece of ribbon in half just a little longer than your desired final length and cut the ribbon.
4. To form the bow, pinch the center of the three ribbon circles.
5. Next, pinch the center of your stream tail and hold it on the pinched loops’ center bottom.
6. Use a zip tie (the one I used) around the center of the bow’s loops. Be sure to pull it tight before trimming off the zip tie with your wirecutter (this one is my favorite). Please note: if you want to attach the bow to a wreath with wire or a chenille stem, place it on the back of your bow and then zip tie the bow and chenille stem together.
7. The center ribbon knot is simple to make. Cut a piece of ribbon, then make a knot in the center of your ribbon. Use the tails of your ribbon knot to tie it around the center of the bow. Note: you can use another ribbon for the center knot.
8. You can tie the knotted ribbon around the center of the bow and leave the tails long enough to attach the bow to a wreath, as a lantern bow, Christmas tree bow, swag bow, or gift wrapping bow. You can also use hot glue or floral wire to attach the bow.
9. To fluff the bow, I start with the inside left loop and pull it to the bottom, and then I grab the loop on the opposite side and do the same thing. I leave the loop on top as the center loop and pull out from the top, always leaving the center’s top loop. However, you may like to arrange them the opposite either way is gorgeous.
10. Now, your wreath bow is ready to be attached to your wreath form. If you added a wire or chenille stem to the zip tie, you could wire the bow to your wreath. However, you can use a hot glue gun and glue it to your wreath, or you can pin it in place.
Learning to make the perfect bow only takes a few minutes and no special tools!
These gorgeous bows all have a farmhouse-inspired vibe with the buffalo check or burlap ribbon. However, if you use a satin ribbon to make this bow, it will look elegant.
I used black and white buffalo check ribbon for this DIY ribbon bow. The ribbon choice is perfect for all-year use.
Burlap wired ribbon bows are the most popular since they are lovely for wreaths, weddings, gifts, crafting, and decorating.
Wired Edge Ribbon Wreath Bow
You can make this bow with a grosgrain ribbon for a hair bow or a wide ribbon for decorating.
I made this handmade wood slice wreath from a fallen tree in my yard. I like the wood slices’ rustic farmhouse look, and I enjoy buffalo check ribbon, so combining these two elements was a must.
Making a Bow
Multi Ribbon Bow
Fall is my favorite time of year, and to celebrate, I like to create a gorgeous new bow for my fall wreath. I shared how I made this multi Ribbon bow in an earlier post. It is an easy bow to make but looks so elegant. This bow is so gorgeous that I had to use it on my Christmas wreath.
Easy DIY Bow
You know I LOVE Goodwill shirts, pumpkins! So I took it one step further, made a door hanger with a Goodwill shirt, and added this Easy DIY Bow. This two-loop b0w with short tails is just what my door hanger needed.
One Ribbon
This one ribbon bow has a center loop, right and left loop (add as many loops as you wish), and tails.
DIY Double Ribbon Bow Step-by-Step
The Double Ribbon Bow is gorgeous and easy to make. See how to make this bow one on my YouTube video.
Note: This one makes the perfect Christmas tree topper bow too.
Double Ribbon Bow Supplies
This bow does not require any fancy tools, just a few items you probably have on hand.
Ribbon (red and white) and (black and white)
Zip tie
Scissors
I recommend that you use two different ribbons that are the same width.
Step 1. Place one ribbon on top of the other and treat it as one ribbon. Then, trim off the ends of the ribbon.
Step 2. Curl the end of the ribbons to form a center loop.
Step 3. Next, form the side loops of the bow. If you use a one-sided ribbon, you will need to twist the ribbon for each loop.
Step 4. Form loops on each side of the center loop, going back and forth as you add the loops.
Note: You can choose to make all the side loops the same size, or you can make each set of side loops a little larger. I made a total of four double-side loops and one center loop.
Step 5. To form the streamers (tails), I make a giant loop and then cut off the remaining ribbon.
Step 6. Then I pinch the center of all the loops and secure it with a zip tie.
Step 7. The next step is fluffing the bow.
Step 8. To form the chevron, cut ends for the streamers, I fold the stream ribbons in half length-wise and then fold again width-wise too.
Rustic Christmas Wreath
You can make this funky, fun bow with up to eight different ribbons. It is the perfect way to use up pieces of scrap ribbon. You can see how I made this fun bow in this earlier post.
Please join me (HERE) as we craft up some fun. You can look forward to receiving new inspiration every week, including special online crafting events and seasonal and holiday crafting.
