How to Make Rhythm Beads

Things You’ll Need String

Leather cord

Beads

Bells

Alligator clips

Jeweler’s glue

Warnings Don’t leave rhythm beads around your horse when he’s unattended.

Tips Use a leather cord so that if the rhythm beads get entangled in anything, the cord will break.

Rhythm beads, also known as horse necklaces, are quickly becoming a favorite of horse trainers nationwide. Whether your specialty is dressage, jumping or barrel racing, rhythm beads help the horse keep his cadence, and the rider keep in tempo with the horse’s gait. Rhythm beads are also useful for trail riders, since they warn wildlife that the horse is in the area, and serve as white noise for the horse, keeping him from being startled by unexpected sounds.

Measure Your Horse’s Neck

Make a rough measurement for the length of your rhythm beads by using a piece of string. Drape it around your horse’s neck until you have the proper size. Cut the string to the appropriate length. Measure the string. Add 1 foot to that measurement, then cut your leather cord accordingly.

Choose your beads. Since rhythm beads date back to Native American tribes, many riders use the ancient beliefs about color to decide the hues of their rhythm beads. Red, for example, means power, passion and courage. Yellow translates to intelligence and concentration, while blue represents truth, serenity and healing. Other riders choose beads that will flatter the coloring of their horses.

Put together the two ends of your cord, then slide a bell down the cord so that it is exactly equidistant between the two. This is the center of your necklace. Start threading your beads onto the leather cord in a pre-determined pattern, depending on your taste. Thread 6 inches on one side of the cord, then 6 inches on the other.

Add another bell every 6 to 8 inches on each side so that they are at even intervals. This will ensure a balance to both the weight of your horse necklace and a symmetry to the sound.

Stop your beading on each side 6 inches before the end of the cord. Tie a double knot to keep the beading in place on each end of the necklace, then cover the knots in jeweler’s glue to ensure they stay in place. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Attach an alligator clip to the end.

Fasten the necklace around the horse’s neck and tie the two ends of the cord together to fasten it. Clip the alligator clip to the horse’s mane, and your rhythm beads are done.

Sizing and Care of Rhythm Beads

To find the correct size for ordering your rhythm beads you can measure your horse or pony’s neck, for a precise fit.

The correct place to measure is around the ‘drive line’, located as shown in the photo below.

Use a flexible tape measure, or a piece of baling twine or string and then measure at the base of the neck, before it becomes the shoulder.

Choose the size that is closest in measurement in the middle of the size range:

if your horse’s neck measures 55″ choose COB size 52″-60″

if it measures 58″, you will still find the COB size fits

if you want a little more room, or a looser fit, the HORSE size 60″-68″ will be better for you.

Having said that, COB size is the most popular size!

PLEASE NOTE: they are all adjustable by approximately 6″ (15cm).

What Are Rhythm Beads?

Heading 2

Rhythm beads are inspired by native Americans, who used hand carved beads from animal bones, shells, feathers and other ‘found’ objects, to decorate and honour their horses; they also believed they gave spiritual protection.

How Do They Work?

Nowadays rhythm beads are used to help calm nervous and spooky horses by giving them a gentle rhythmic jingle to listen to and focus on, rather than other distractions in the environment.

As your horse moves, the bells on your rhythm beads jingle in time with the gait, enabling both horse and rider stay in time, increasing both your and your horses relaxation, connection and focus, improving timing and building confidence between you and your horse.

What About Nervous Riders?

Many riders also use rhythm beads to help with nerves, anxiety and loss of confidence riding. The use of rhythm beads leads to calmer horses, which in turn helps riders maintain focus, have a better sense of timing and build confidence.

Do They Have Any Other Benefits Or Uses?

Yes, several!

Rhythm beads aren’t just for calming! They encourage relaxation and can be used when schooling to improve your horse’s focus; the horse listens to the rhythmic sound of the ‘necklace’ and is less distracted by other sounds. This in turn leads to improved gaits, stride length and impulsion. Great for practising your dressage moves!

They are also a useful tool when it comes to jumping! Counting strides is so much easier when you can hear the rhythm!

Rhythm beads can help you out hacking, as they alert wildlife of your approach, ‘flushing’ out birds and so forth and therefore preventing birds flying out and spooking your horse.
