Locking Wheel Nut Removal – Removing Tight Wheel Nuts

How to Install and Remove Wheel Nuts/Locks and Bolts – This Article also Explains ‘How to Remove Tight/Fast Over-Tightened Wheel Nuts/Locks and Bolts’

This information is given in order to assist with the removal and installation of locking wheel nuts; www.LockingWheelNutKeys.co.uk will not be responsible for any damage whether it be to person or vehicle by following these guidance notes/tips.

How to install and remove wheel nuts/locks – this article also explains ‘how you can remove tight/fast over-tightened locking wheel nuts/locks and bolts’

Installing Locking Wheel Nuts

1. Remove one original wheel nut or wheel bolt from each wheel of your vehicle. When replacing a wheel later, remove the Locking Wheel Nut first and install it last.

IMPORTANT – Before installing the locking wheel nut, please always check that the wheel lock nut has the same thread, seat, and shaft/overall length as the original nut/bolt!

2. Install each locking wheel nut/lock by hand on each wheel. Do Not Use an Impact Wrench when tightening the wheel nuts. Make sure that the key pattern is firmly and securely engaged into the wheel nut lock pattern. Using the provided key and a torque wrench, tighten each wheel nut lock with the torque specified in your vehicle’s manual. Apply axial pressure on the torque wrench in the direction of the locking wheel nut to prevent the provided wheel nut key from slipping or jamming. Turn the wheel by hand to check whether it rotates freely and without impediment. Verify that the minimum thread engagement into the hub assembly is 5,5 revolutions of the fasteners. Certain wheel nut locks/bolts are a 2-piece design. If the locking wheel nut has a floating seat washer/rotating collar ensure that this is attached to the lock nut/bolt before installing.

We do not recommend the use of oil, grease or lubricants on threads.

3. Turn the wheel by hand to check whether it rotates freely and without impediment.

IMPORTANT Do not use an impact wrench: this can damage the locking wheel nut, key, and your vehicle. After the first thirty miles, please check again that the locking wheel nut sits properly, and if necessary re-tighten it with a torque wrench. So that you can access your locking wheel nut key in the event of a wheel/Tyre change, we recommend that you keep your locking wheel nut key, the original nuts/bolts for your vehicle, and the installation instructions in a secure place.

Removing tight locking wheel nuts/bolts

CAUTION You are recommended to wear protective gloves and goggles when removing tight wheel nut locks!- Firstly, tighten all the standard hex bolts on the wheel with the over-tightened locking wheel nut to reduce the pressure on the the actual locking wheel nut. When tightening the standard bolt fasteners, make sure that you do not damage the thread.

NOTE: Contrary to the instructions for installing the locking wheel nut, an impact wrench is a suitable tool for removing wheel nuts that are too tight. When the first attempt fails to loosen the wheel nut, try again. The impact wrench must exert an adequate torque.

Remove the locking wheel nut with the locking wheel nut key. Use a suitable loosening tool, e.g. an impact wrench, spider spanner, or ratchet. When loosening, you must always use the loosening tool to exert pressure on the locking wheel nut and locking wheel nut key’s longitudinal axis. This ensures that the locking wheel nut key engages exactly in the coding and does not slip or twist out.

Make sure that the loosening tool you use is not applied obliquely (at an angle). Oblique applications can cause the locking wheel nut key or coding’s to deform or fracture.

When the loosening procedure described above fails, please loosen (on four hole rims) the standard fastener/bolt opposite the locking wheel nut. On five hole rims, loosen the two standard fasteners/bolts opposite the locking wheel nut. After loosening, repeat the procedure described under (2).

After loosening the locking wheel nut, remove all wheel nuts/bolts, and install the new wheel. Install the locking wheel nut lock in accordance with the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.

Further Tips/Advice on Wheel Nut Removal Techniques

In order to reduce stress and flatten dings and dents of the locking wheel nut head, please take a drift punch or bar and hammer on the locking wheel nut head in axial direction.

With this action you will can get a better and deeper engagement of the locking wheel nut key.

When undoing the locking wheel nuts, please fix the wheel nut key wrench in axial direction/towards the locking wheel nut by hand in order to avoid or minimize any tipping / side load.

www.LockingWheelNutKeys™ cannot take any responsibility for injuries/damages however incurred. If in doubt please consult a professional tyre/wheel remover in order to perform the above procedures.

Retorquing wheels

The presence of dirt, sand, rust or grit between surfaces such as the threads of the nut or between a nut and the wheel can also create “false torques” during the initial fitting, where the force applied overcomes the friction but doesn’t translate into clamping force.

For these reasons, many car garages and tyre retailers will invite drivers to come back the next working day to have their wheels retorqued. It’s a quick procedure, usually offered free of charge, which involves inspecting each wheel nut to check if they are too tight or too loose.

If the wheel nuts are too tight, they can cause severe problems such as stripping the fastener threads or stretching the wheel studs. They could also warp the brake drums, brake discs or wheel hubs. With loose nuts, meanwhile, there’s a small risk that the wheel could come off while you’re on the road. The chances of this ever happening are very low – but if it did happen, your safety and that of other road users would be at risk.

Removing Over-tightened Lock Bolts on Car Wheels

Winter is coming, and you need to install your snow tires. In case your vehicle has lock bolts or security nuts and you cannot remove them using the key tool or you lost your key tool, this Instructable is for you. For those living in a more temperate climate, having lock bolts on your wheels while having a flat tire on the side of the road could be a disastrous and expensive experience, so please consider removing them.

I bought a used car in May, and when came time to change the tires, I noticed the previous owner had installed one lock bolt (or security nuts, with a unique pattern) on each wheel. He gave me the key socket to remove the bolts. I did not pay too much attention back then, not having to remove the wheels until now, to install winter tires. Then my problem started. The previous owner, or his mechanic had over-tightened all the bolts with an impact driver, at maximum pressure. On my first attempt to remove the lock bolts, I noticed they were over-tightened so much, that the key socket got broken and slipped, and became useless. Thinking the socket was the cause, I went to the dealership, and their mechanic tried with their own set of key socket (better quality, I assumed). That socket got broken as well. The mechanics mention they could do the removal, but it would be an expensive job and I would have to wait one week.

Doing a bit of research, I found a bolt extractor from Irwin Tools, p/n 53915 Irwin 13/16″- 21mm, which seems to do the job. Trying to get this item though was not easy, because most car par dealers / hardware stores do not carry it stock. They carry the smaller versions of the tool. Going to my local NAPA auto parts store, I found a 21mm extractor (the size of my wheel bolts), part number 62798R4, which has a left-threaded conical pattern on one end, and a 1/2″ square socket hole on the other. I used this tool as-is, and after 5 attempts, hammering it down several time on the lock bolt, I could not remove even one. I thought the battle was lost, until…
