Pokemon Breeding – Perfect Froakie
So I’ll be using this post as a progress tracker in breeding a perfect 5/6 IV Timid with Protean ability Froakie and also as a step-by-step case study for those who have read all the other breeding guides and understand the mechanisms but still don’t get how it really works. Which was pretty much me until I tried it out myself.
Please note that breeding perfect starter pokemon (those you choose at the start of the game) is significantly more difficult than an ordinary pokemon you catch in the wild as the female hatch rate for starter pokemon is 12%. This makes it hard to get females so IV spreads will be more dominant on the male offspring. It is even worse if you are trying to breed one with a hidden ability as there is the chance it will inherit a non-hidden ability instead.
1. First things first, you NEED to at least have the Pokemon you want with the ability you want. Bonus if it also has the correct nature.
For example I wanted a Froakie with Protean which is a hidden ability. Breeding two Torrent Froakies will NEVER get me Protean. So first you have to go get a Froakie with Protean ability (either by Friend Safari as a level 30 Frogadier or by trade – you have a 25% chance of getting a Protean Frogadier off GTS if it’s level 30. It’s normally 50% but most people don’t want a Torrent Frogadier so those are more common on the GTS).
Then we need to get one with the CORRECT nature.
IF you have someone in your friend safari with Frogadier – excellent.
Get a Ralts with Synchronize and also the nature you want. If you have a Ralts with Synchronize but the wrong nature then no worries, throw your Ralts and another random Ralts into the daycare and breed until you get one with Synchronize AND the nature you want. Natures are randomly generated when breeding without an Everstone. (If you don’t have another Ralts, you can use Ditto. However using two Ralts is a LOT faster than using a Ditto.)
Put your Ralts first in your party, give it a Smoke Ball or any other held item that allows you run without fail from wild encounters and go into the Friend Safari. The Synchronize Ralts gives you a higher chance of catching a Pokemon with the nature same as your Ralts. Do note that while safaris contain hidden ability pokemon, this does not mean they ALL are. So I could still get a Torrent Frogadier instead of a Protean one. You just need to keep catching until you get one you want.
For example, I have a friend with Frogadier in his safari. I wanted a Timid Protean Frogadier so all I needed was a Ralts with Synchronize and Timid nature and keep catching Frogadiers till I got the one I wanted (got lucky on first try and it also had Protean!).
IF you DON’T have someone in your friend safari with Frogadier – no problem.
At least you have a Frogadier with Protean ability right? If it’s a female Frogadier – even better, as females have a higher chance of passing down their ability so we just need to breed (either with Ditto or another Frogadier) until we get one with the correct nature. If it’s male….you just repeat the same process but your chances of having a baby with Protean is lower than if it was a female parent so you may end up with a Froakie with the correct nature but with Torrent instead of Protean.
Now you should have either a male or female Frogadier with the Nature and the Ability you want.
2. Now we need a matching parent – one with the same nature and ability.
For example I have a Frogadier – Male, Protean, Timid Nature. Which means I need a Female Frogadier with Protean and Timid Nature also. Now because starter Pokemon like Frogadier have a gender ratio of 12.5% female to 87.5%, this means I have an incredibly low chance of hatching a female Froakie compared to other Pokemon. So best to hit up that Safari of mines again to catch a female Frogadier!
But that’s not all, as Frogadier is a starter pokemon, my chances of encountering a female Frogadier is pretty low. There is a trick around this though….
Cute Charm is an ability (common to Jigglypuff/Igglypuff/Skitty etc) that raises the chance of you encountering a Pokemon of the opposite gender.
I have a Male Igglypuff with Cute Charm which increases my chances of encountering a female pokemon. So then I just need to attack the Frogadiers in the safari a few times and test if it has Protean before catching.
If you don’t have Frogadier in your safari, you just need to keep breeding until you get one of the opposite gender. Attach an Everstone to the parent with the nature and just breed away with dittos/frogadiers until you get the right gender and ability.
Now I have a Female Lonely Protean and a Male Timid Protean Frogadier as breeding parents. Safari Pokemon always have 2 perfect IVs so it’s a matter of getting an even spread to cover the 5 you need eventually. For now we only want two with the correct nature and ability so we can forget about the IVs till later.
3. Once I have both, I go to the Daycare while keeping the Everstone on the parent with the right nature and leaving the other with Destiny Knot (or if you want to force an IV, use a power item). I want to hatch a female with the correct ability and nature at this stage.
Everstone guarantees that the Pokemon holding it passes it’s NATURE to the baby. ONLY the nature. The ability is either inherited from the mother (80% chance – or 50% coin flip if you’re breeding with a Ditto because Ditto cannot pass it’s ability) or is randomized.
Destiny knot increases the chances the number of IVs that can be inherited from 3 to 5 though at this stage it’s not really that relevant until we get a necessary female.
My goal here is to hatch a FEMALE Froakie with Protean Ability and Timid Nature.
My first 5 baby Froakies had the following natures and abilities and perfect IVs: (1 spot reserved for Talonflame)
i) Female, Timid, Protean. IVs in: Attack. (omfg so lucky!)
ii) Male, Timid, Torrent. IVs in: Attack
iii) Male, Timid, Protean. IVs in: HP, Defense, Speed
iv) Male, Timid, Protean. IVs in: None
v) Female, Timid, Torrent. IVs in: Speed. -HP
The torrent Froakies are pretty much useless to me. One of the Protean Male is also useless because it has no perfect IVs. In this case, I just want to keep the first female with the attack IV because it has the correct nature (the second female might be worth trading as female starters are rare) and the male because it has 3 IVs.
4. Now I need to get the correct IV spread between both parents. You want to cover everything aside from the attack stat you don’t need. Special attack oriented Pokemon do NOT need the attack IV but you can still aim for 6/6 if you want perfection, it’s just more time consuming.
Now I take out my female Frogadier and replace it with the new female Froakie I just hatched. I also need to take out the male because I want to replace that too. So now the daycare looks like this:
Male: Timid, Protean. IV: HP, Defense, Speed + Destiny Knot
Female: Timid, Protean. IV: Att + Everstone (100% chance to pass on nature)
My goal now is to get the right IV spread in which I’m currently missing Sp.Att and Sp.Def. This may mean breeding with other Pokemon in the same egg group but for now, we’ll try and get a female Froakie with 2 IVs.
Note that if you are breeding with Pokemon of different egg groups to get the IV spread, the female Pokemon must be the one you WANT to breed (in this case, Froakie must be female) so you must catch MALES from the safari to force the IVs down to the offspring.
Next batch of eggs looked like this: (all timid nature)
i) Male, Torrent, Att, Speed. -HP
ii) Male, Torrent, Speed.
iii) Male, Torrent, Defense
iv) Male, Protean, Attack
v) Male, Protean, HP, Attack.
So nope, useless. Continuing breeding…..from now on I’ll skip the boring details and update only when I make significant progress of some sort. I’m also going to skip listing natures as I always keep an Everstone on the female with Timid nature so I won’t be able to breed anything other than Timid Froakies.
Around 4 batches later – 20 eggs or so, I finally got a Male Froakie with IVs: HP, Att, Def and Speed. Which is ONE more IV than the one I have in the daycare. Excellent. So now my male Froakie is perfect. I just need a female with the missing IVs: Sp.Att and Sp.Def.
Take out the male parent in the daycare, he’s no longer needed as we have a better replacement.
My goal is a FEMALE Froakie with Protean and IVs: Sp.Att and Sp.Def.
This is to cover the missing IVs on the 4IV male we just hatched. The female Froakie we currently have in the daycare NEEDS to stay because it has the correct ability and nature. So we need to find males with Sp. Att and Sp. Def. They do NOT need to be combined. (It’ll take you ages to catch one of them anyway and even lower chances if you want a female from the safari.)
I already pre-caught a male Frogadier with Sp. Att IV and one with Sp. Def IV. So now I put the Sp. Att one into the daycare with the female. So the daycare looks like this:
Male: Timid, Torrent, Sp. Att, Speed + Power Lens
Female: Timid, Protean, Att + Everstone
In the first batch, I got a female, Protean with Sp.Att and Speed. Everything else was pretty much useless so those can be traded/released. (I release unneeded ones after each batch of eggs because I don’t have box space or time to be marking unnecessary ones).
Now I need to hatch a female with Sp.Att AND Sp.Def so we take the male out the daycare and replace him with the other Frogadier that had the Sp.Def IV. Now the daycare looks like this:
Male: Torrent, Att, Sp.Def + Power Band
Female: Protean, Sp.Att, Speed + Everstone
It is a complete gamble here, you just need to keep catching until it gets both Sp.Att and Sp.Def. All the offspring will have Sp.Def because of the power item but it’s down to luck of draw to get Sp.Att too. Midst breeding I got a Male with Sp.Att and Sp.Def IVs which I then replaced the one in the daycare. So it now looks like this:
Male: Protean, HP, Sp.Att , Sp.Def + Power Band
Female: Protean, Sp.Att, Speed + Everstone
3 batches later – around 15 eggs later I got a Timid Torrent Male with HP, Def, Sp.Att, Sp.Def. What the heck. None of the parents have def (I even took them out the daycare and to the judge to confirm the IVs afterwards) so I have no idea how it got it but ok, no problem it has all the necessary IVs so I’ll just use it as a breeding parent for IVs.
5. Once you have the correct IV spread, you simply keep breeding until you get 5/6 IVs. Continue to replace the parents with better newly hatched ones if possible. So always try to move from 2/5 to 3/5 to 4/5 IV parents, including both female and males. This increases the chances of the offspring to inherit the IVs from the parents.
So it now looks like this:
Male: Torrent, HP, Def, Sp.Att , Sp.Def + Destiny Knot
Female: Protean, Sp.Att, Speed + Everstone
Urgh in the next batched I hatched a perfect female with IVs: HP, Def, Sp.Att, Sp.Def and Speed but it has TORRENT instead of Protean. This is killing me as I’ll need to keep hatching until I get one with all IVs AND with the hidden ability Protean.
But wait in my 3rd batch (15 eggs) I got both a female and male froakie with protean AND both with even IV spreads! By that I mean both parents cover the 5 IVs I needed along with both having Protean! (increased chances of baby inheriting Protean) PERFECT FOR BREEDING! So daycare again:
Male: Protean, HP, Def, Sp.Def, Speed + Destiny Knot
Female: Protean, Defense, Sp.Att, Sp.Def + Everstone
Remember because I want Protean, the female I’m breeding must ALWAYS have Protean. The male can have torrent but still breed babies with Protean because the female has a higher chance of passing its ability. Anyway back to breeding…..
6. It’ll take time but eventually you’ll hatch a 5/6 IV Pokemon with the correct nature and ability.
3rd batch in – 15 eggs – I hatched a Timid Protean Male with IVs: HP, Def, Sp.Att, Sp.Def and Speed. Job done!
In total I took around 17 batches of eggs from start to finish so roughly ~85 eggs to hatch a perfect Froakie. The most time consuming part of IV breeding is checking the natures, abilities and IVs are passed down correctly and catching/arranging parents to get the right IV spread. Which is why keeping a chart is definitely handy. 😛 I started breeding on sunday and only did a couple of batches each night (I’m relatively slow and easily bored) so around 3-4 days to breed in total but if you were determined, I guess you could get one in around 7-10 hours of nonstop breeding.
