How to clean your rusty ball bearings.
This is a tutorial will show you how to quickly, safely, and economically remove the rust from your bearings.
Please note, this tutorial is regarding steel ball bearings only. White vinegar is a human safe acid, but will dissolve copper and nickel. Aluminum has no reaction with vinegar.
Portions of this regarding solvent should be done in a well ventilated area with adult supervision.
Please follow the directions explicitly and do not change the solution by adding other chemicals that someone tells you will “help”, such as salt, baking soda, coca cola and peroxide.
This is the bearing from my first trade and will serve as the subject for this tutorial.
Things you will need
Toothbrush or cloth
White Vinegar
A transparent jar or cup
1.Clean the lubricant off of your rusted bearing with your preferred solvent.
Allow the bearing to dry completely. Compressed air will speed the process.

Now Place bearing into the vinegar. You will begin to see hydrogen bubbles forming on the bearing. Remove the bearing every 2 hours and give it a scrub with the toothbrush or cloth to remove loosened rust. If corrosion is heavy, or if time is not a factor, you may also leave the bearing in the vinegar overnight and achieve similar effects.

Once the oxidation has been removed, place bearing someplace warm and dry till the vinegar evaporates completely. Your should give it a spin every now and again to to insure there is no vinegar trapped in the race. White vinegar does not leave a residue when it evaporates, so you will not need to do additional cleaning.
DO NOT rinse the bearing in soapy water!
DO NOT place the bearing in a solvent (mineral spirit) bath before it is dry!
Either of these things will accelerate the corrosion returning.
Your bearing is now restored and ready to be installed dry or lubed.
Please note that heavily corroded bearings will display pitting and will not be shiny.

How To Clean Rusted Skateboard Bearings (Reason Of Rusting And Removal Process)
If you need your skateboard wheels to roll smoothly, you have to have a sensible pair of bearings. Every skateboard wheel holds two bearings, and you can usually fill up the space in between them with something called a spacer.
This piece of metal prevents the bearings from being pushed into the Center of the wheels when the axle nut is tightened and getting damaged.
A bearing would spin away with all your weight better than an unweighted bearing. A bearing bought from a recognized brand can make your skateboard go fast only when it is kept clean, lubricated, and is in alignment with the wheels’ main core.
Therefore, the best skateboard wheel bearings would be those that are kept clean.
In other words, if you buy a well-branded wheel bearing instead of junk, it will be the most important thing. The best ones recommended are rubber labyrinth shields (RU).
Why Do The Bearings Get Rusted?
Save
After a lot of research on what contributes to bearing failure, the one answer was corrosion. Corrosion usually occurs when either the bearings are exposed to water, or corrosive liquids or the lubricants have failed.
Corrosion causes the production of rust that is formed in the bearings, especially if the crust forms on the roller wheels, then it becomes unusable.
Water is a major contributing factor for the rust on bearings, especially if it has been exposed greatly. The lubricant usually thins out over time since it takes a lot of pressure or contact with the raceway; therefore be unable to keep sufficient coat and protect the area of direct contact.
If the bearings are exposed to air, corrosion occurs through condensation or humidity that usually leads to developing rust. This kind of rust causes flaking and cracks in the bearings.
Other elements that could cause rusting include acid liquid, which could corrode steel even. The sign of corrosion is often a grey or dark-coloured streak across the raceways.
How To Clean Rusted Bearings?
As time goes by, dirty residue tends to collect in the bearings and prevent you from honing your skateboarding abilities. If the bearings are clean, it reduces the chances of wear and tear of the board, speed increases, decrease wobbles and seizing of wheels is easily prevented.
Fortunately, the cleaning process is a lot easier than you would think.
Bearing Removal Process From Wheels
1. Get the necessary material like a screwdriver, a wrench, and a T- tool, and a bearing pole as well. It will be easier if you have these items beforehand.
2. Remove the wheels from the skateboard by using a wrench by loosening the nuts that hold the wheels in place. The board must be firmly held and put pressure to get the bolts to open up.
3. Keep the wheel and its bolt and bearings safely by keeping a check as you can misplace them very easily.
4. Remove the loosened bearing from the wheel by using a screwdriver. Some boards even have a spacer in between the bearings, so you must remove it before removing the bearings.
Then it comes to
Bearing Cleaning Process-
1. Firstly, make sure to clean the debris or any other obvious particles. Remove the dirt from the bearings with a dry paper towel. You can also apply a solvent if you find the grease to be stubborn on removal.
2. Put together a solution of either acetone or a grease solvent for cleaning bearing. The spirits or rubbing alcohol can be used as well because they are cheap and not as harsh as others. Remember to wear gloves before you decide to put the bearings in the solution as they could react with your skin.
3. Now, hold the bearing and use a paper clip or safety pin to remove the rubber shield cap that is in the bearing itself. These shields are red or black. You’ll see metal balls when you remove the caps.
4. Then, immerse the bearings in the solution by casually stirring the solvent for just 5 minutes and then letting it stay there for another 10 minutes. If the solvent has turned grey, remove it and add the fresh one to the point where you’re left with cleaned bearings.
5. Lay down a paper towel or a rag over it and gently out the bearing over it to let it dry completely.
How Do Lubricate The Bearings Before Assembling Them?
You can use canned air to dry off the bearings faster. Then you must lubricate the bearing to prevent it from wear and tear. Use 2 – 3 drops of lubricant and spin to spread it evenly. WD – 40 is the best lubricant that you can use.
The shield will get inserted back easily after lubrication but see that there should be no space between them. Now the bearings must be inserted again into the wheels. You must push the wheels in the downward direction by putting a lot of pressure so that they don’t come off.
Now that you have put the bearings attach the wheel and secure the nut bolt, and check that the skate wheels don’t jiggle.
The final check that you have to do is spin the wheels. If the wheels spin easily without coming off, then you’ve done a good job.
How To Prevent Rusting Of Bearings?
By the use of lubricants like WD 40 , you can prevent rusting. Also, one must keep a check on seals.
, you can prevent rusting. Also, one must keep a check on seals. By keeping a cleaning schedule to prevent general wear and tear.
FAQs
Q1.How can you easily clean bearings? The best way is to clean with acetone since it will loosen the grease and will be easily cleaned. Q2. Can vinegar act as a cleaner for a bearing? You can by adding baking soda to it, but it won’t last long. Q3. Is coke a good thing to clean the skateboard bearings? No, even though it may clean the bearing, it could react with it too. Q4. Can I use a bar of dish soap for cleaning bearings? No, you should not use dish soap as it won’t help the grease off easily.
Wrapping Up
It can finally be said that proper care has to be taken when dealing with the wheel bearings as they’re reactive to water and air. One must keep a scheduled cleaning procedure to ensure prevention from wear and tear.
How to Clean Skateboard Bearings Correctly
If you feel that your bearings spin slowly, unevenly, or are making any noise, it may be time to clean them. Cleaning bearings takes about 20 minutes and can greatly prolong the life of the bearings if done periodically and correctly.
That being said, sometimes bearings are beyond repair. It’ll be your call, but we recommend replacing the entire set if any rust or corrosion is present on any of your bearings. Generally, if rust is present on one bearing, there are probably contaminants or small patches of rust on other parts, which will spread like cancer through the bearing. At this point, no amount of cleaning is going to fix the bearings. At that point, it’s best to start fresh.
If a bearing is seized, you should absolutely replace it. A seized bearing can pose a threat to your safety from the excess heat buildup. This is due to increased friction when attempting to roll. Too much heat and friction will cause the bearing can collapse while you’re riding, or the core of your wheels to melt. Say hello to road rash.
To begin the cleaning process, you will need…
A Cleaning Kit
Bones Reds Cleaning Kit
Oust Speed Kleen Kit
You can also make your own
Bearing Cleaner
Citrus-Based Cleaner
Bearing Lubricant
Bones Speed Cream
Oust Met Ol
Towel
Microfiber Shop Towel
That one towel that you stole from the hotel
Razor Blade or Pin
Step 1) Surgery
First, we need to open the bearings up. Wipe off the dirt that’s on the outside of your bearings with the towel. If you have a rubber bearing shield, take a razor and wedge it between the shield and the inner race ring. Pry up to pop off the shield. Be careful not to damage your bearing shield.
If you have a metal bearing shield, take a pin and pry out the C ring that is between the bearing shield and the outer race ring. Tap the bearing face down on the table to get the shield off.
Some metal bearing shields are not removable. If you can, remove one shield. If no shields are removable, then it is probably best to just get new bearings.
After the shields are off, on one side you should see a plastic looking thing over the steel balls. This is called the nylon retainer. Use your pin or razor to pry it out of the bearing. You don’t want the retainer in there with the cleaning solution. Set all of this aside for reassembly.
If you open the bearing shields and inside there is a metal cage, you cannot remove it. Just clean the bearings with this on.
Step 2) Some Assembly Required
Skateboard bearing cleaning kits all have the same basic design of a bottle with an axle(s) inside the cap to attach your bearings. Remove the wingnut or end cap from the bottom of the axle and take off the spacers.
If the cleaning kit did not include spacers, you can use the spacers from your normal setup. However, if you use normal sized spacers instead of the included spacers, you may not be able to clean all of your bearings at once because normal spacers are larger.
Put your bearings and spacers on the axle, alternating between bearing and spacer. Secure the bearings and spacers on the axle with the wingnut or end cap.
Step 3) Shake It Off
Fill the container about 1/4th of the way with bearing cleaner. Insert the bearings into the bottle and secure the lid. Shake the container vigorously like a shake weight. This is a very important part of the technique. The cleaning solution should get dirty and nasty.
Step 4) Towel Dry
Open the lid over a towel and take off the lid. Carefully remove the bearings and set the container of cleaner to the side. Take the wingnut or end cap off the axle put the clean bearings onto the towel. Dry each bearing, spacer, and the axle with the towel.
If there is a lot of residue on the bearings, they can be washed with water. This sounds counter-intuitive, but as long as the bearing does not sit with water in it for an extended period of time, it will not rust. Make sure to dry the bearings super well with a hair dryer or heat gun and apply lubricant immediately.
Step 5) Reassembly
Put the nylon retainer back into the bearing by spacing out the balls and popping it in. Put one shield back onto the bearing as well. Rubber shields pop back on with a slight press. Be very careful not to bend the shields.
To re-attach a metal shield, place the shield onto the bearing and push the c-ring back into place.
Place the bearing with the open side up and drip bearing lube inside. About 2-5 drops of bearing lube should be enough. Too much lube can actually slow the bearing. Re-attach the other bearing shield and reinstall on the skateboard.
