The pool deck is the perfect place to recover and recharge after a late night out in Las Vegas. A key amenity at mega-resorts, Vegas pools run the gambit from run-of-the-mill, to spectacular. As the pool is a priority for many visitors, we thought it would be fun to put together a list of tips and tricks to make the most of your Las Vegas pool experience.

Bring a Waterproof Phone Case: I was mid-air, about to land in the pool at TI when I realized my cell phone was in my pocket. Learning the hard way and being phone-less for the remainder of my trip was a tough way to learn that a cheap, effective, waterproof phone case is invaluable. Ultimately, you want your phone at the pool to scroll the time away, but you don’t want to leave it behind to be stolen when you go in the water. Likewise, you don’t want to bring it in the water unprotected. A waterproof phone case solves this problem for a few bucks. Or Use the FlexSafe: An alternative to renting a locker at the pool, FlexSafe locks to your lounger (or any solid object for that matter) and allows you to securely lock your valuables while you wonder the pool complex.

You Can Access Other Resort Pools: Stuck at a hotel with a boring pool? A handful of resorts with top-tier pool complexes like MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, and more allow non-guests to access their pools for a fee. Given the number of amazing pools that are accessible, this is one of our favorite tips to share. Even if a specific pool doesn’t offer non-guest access, renting a cabana or daybed will commonly allow you to get in. Going With a Group? Spring for the Cabana: Cabanas provide guaranteed seating and shade for a price of $200 – $500 depending on the resort. Oftentimes, the fee works as a food and beverage minimum. Ensure you read the fine print so you understand the terms. Common amenities within pool cabanas include a safe, fridge stocked with bottled water, and a TV you have control over. Consider Renting a Daybed: Even if you’re not going with a group, save yourself the stress of finding a lounge chair and pre-order a daybed on the resort’s website. Not only will you be guaranteed immediate entry on a crowded day, but you’ll have a spot to relax.

Don’t Forget Your Room Key: Most hotel pools require you to show or swipe your room key to gain entry. Nothing worse than walking the half-mile from your room to the pool, only to be denied entry because you forgot your key is in your wife’s purse.

Sunscreen: That desert sun isn’t what you are used to in Omaha. Bring sunscreen and don’t be shy with it. Don’t get cute and snag the 4 SPF “tanning lotion” either thinking you’ll improve your tan. You won’t. You’ll just be in pain for the rest of the trip.

It’s vacation season, and millions of you will be flocking to the beach to enjoy the warm sun, cool ocean, and excessively competitive volleyball matches. You’ll also have to deal with shrieking kids, sand, and jellyfish, the aquatic reminder that monsters are real and want to mess with you. A little booze would make it all much easier to handle, but, sadly, many beaches don’t allow it. Thankfully, security at the shore ain’t exactly the Secret Service. With little effort, you can successfully sneak alcohol along with you, and enjoy it without drawing unwanted attention. 1. Alcoholic ice snacks No, it’s not easy to make real alcoholic ice cubes without the aid of liquid nitrogen or Mr. Freeze. You can, however, create ice cube-esque concoctions by mixing equal parts low proof alcohol and water, then sticking them in an ice tray (stainless steel works best) and leaving them in the freezer for at least four hours. The result will be a slushy type drink, but this can easily be hidden in your cooler and passed off as a homemade dessert, especially if you add any coloring to it.

2. Binocular flask There’s an entire industry dedicated to getting you drunk illegally. Products like this binocular flask are a good call for the beach, letting you conceal up to 16 ounces of liquor in its two compartments. Looks like real binoculars, and, after enough time, will distort your vision, sort of like real binoculars.

3. Water bottle magic In this video, we learn a simple way to remove the cap from a bottle of water without breaking the seal that hyper-vigilant sobriety enforcers love to check. Just cut the top off a “sacrifice bottle,” soak it in boiling water for a few seconds, then (dude, carefully) pry the cap off. If you did it right, it should come off with the seal intact. Then you just open another water bottle, empty its non-alcoholic contents, fill it up with clear booze, place your magic cap on, and enjoy. We won’t judge if you pretend you’re Walter White during this procedure.

4. Water bottle caps Not in the mood for any excessive prep work? These caps exist specifically to help you get your drinks past security. They fit typical water bottles and make it appear as though the bottle has never been opened. Clear alcohol, bottled water, one of these, and you’re all set.

5. Spiked fruit Smuggling booze onto the beach is easy if you’re bringing snacks. Get a cooking syringe, citrus fruit (oranges work best) and inject your alcohol right in there. So yeah, apparently you can’t bring outside food & drinks into your own guest room at the Virgin Las Vegas. This is totally bizarre to me, but upon digging a bit deeper, it seems that this isn’t the only hotel with such a policy.

For example, it would appear that Encore at Wynn Las Vegas has a similar policy:

Outside food and beverage, as well as coolers, are not permitted at the resort and casino. Guests arriving with these items will be required to discard these items or leave them in their vehicle for the duration of their visit.

Is this outrageous policy actually enforced?

I should mention that my interest in Las Vegas is virtually non-existent, so I’m not the target customer for these properties. I didn’t love Las Vegas pre-coronavirus, and I sure as heck won’t love it post-coronavirus.

Still, I’m kind of in disbelief that this is actually a policy, because it’s so outrageous. It’s one thing if they said you can’t cater your own party in a suite without going through the hotel, but the way these rules are written, you couldn’t even bring a Starbucks iced coffee, a Diet Coke, a protein shake, or a bag of almonds, into your room.

I have a few immediate thoughts here:

I wonder if this policy will be enforced; if you enter the hotel with a CVS or liquor store bag, will they really search you?

Even if this policy isn’t widely enforced, it rubs me the wrong way; I don’t want to go into a hotel knowing I’m violating rules and could be kicked out for doing something very reasonable

I understand hotels (particularly in Las Vegas) are very much trying to push their own F&B outlets, but there’s a fine line between that and not giving people the ability to eat what they want in their room

When staying at hotels during the pandemic I’ve found myself getting food from outside the property more often, given the limited selections available, and my general desire to dine in my room rather than in an indoor restaurant; sometimes I pick up something, sometimes I order through Postmates or Uber Eats, and sometimes I just get snacks at a drugstore

Bottom line

It would appear that multiple Las Vegas hotels have policies banning all outside food and drinks. I’m not sure whether this policy is actually enforced on a widespread basis, but this has to be one of the most ridiculous hotel policies I’ve ever seen. I totally get hotels want to push their own outlets, but this crosses the line, in my opinion.

Las Vegas hotels often forget they’re still in the business of hospitality, even if they try to operate like factories.
