How to keep a chandelier from swinging

My new Long chandelier has been installed and it looks great. The only thing that’s not so great is that it does not stay in one place. Sometimes, due to wind, it swings back and forth. I wanted to know a way how I could make it keep it away from spinning. Here’s what I found that works.

Chandelier can be prevented from spinning around by two ways i.e either by replacing a chain of chandelier with a rod or adding a rod to the already present chain making it firm enough to keep it from going back and forth.

The rod can be of either metal or plastic. It should be thin as compared to the chain so that it goes seamlessly with the look of chained chandelier.

ADDING A ROD TO THE ALREADY PRESENT CHAIN

Simply measure the length of the chain of your chandelier and get a metal or plastic rod of same length. A good rule is that for most chandeliers a rod of thickness 1 inch or less is ideal. These rods are easily available at amazon by searching “acetal copolymer rod”.

If they are longer than required, they are easy to cut while smaller rods can be made longer easily by piercing adjacent ends of rods with a single long nail.

Now you know how it looks in actual practice. Let’s see how to attach this rod with the light fixture and the ceiling.

For attaching the rod, welding is the best practice. If welding is not possible, there is still one alternative. Since, the rod will never bear any weight it can be attached to the chandelier as well as its canopy by using superglue. Superglue works excellent with non-porous surfaces like plastic, metal.

Since the canopy is made out of metal (non-porous material) it makes working with superglue incredibly easy.

Pro Tip: Adhesive bond will be strong if there is more surface area of contact. Try to cover as much surface as possible with adhesive.

In case the chandelier body is made out of a porous material like wood or ceramic, Superglue won’t work there. Therefore, a helpful trick that will make it work is to cover the part where rod is to be attached via a porous material. The best porous material is paper tape.

REPLACING THE CHAIN OF CHANDELIER WITH A ROD

This method completely changes the look of chandelier. It requires welding hence, only a metal rod should be used. Remove the chain from chandelier and replace it with a metal rod. This method requires more work and requires a professional who does welding.

Choose the length of the metal rod (steel, iron, brass etc.) as desired how high you want the light fixture to hang. The rod should be of low weight. This method is ideal if a particular light fixture is special and one does not want to take it off.

The rest of the process is similar, attach one end of the rod with a canopy while other end with the light fixture.

What to do if chandelier hangs with a hook instead of canopy ?

With canopy, it is easier to attach or weld the rod. Without canopy, the chandelier hangs directly with a hook. If a rod is attached to the already present chain it needs to be glued with the ceiling. Now normal superglues do not work with ceilings made out of concrete.

Concrete requires concrete glue. The point where plastic rod touches the ceiling, apply concrete adhesive and let it dry. Whereas at the point where the rod touches the chandelier superglue should be applied.

If ceiling is wooden then it requires separate glue called wood adhesive. But only a strong concrete adhesive will get the work done of you cover the rod with a porous material like a paper tape at the point of contact.

Can a heavier chain prevent chandelier from swinging?

Most chandelier chains are very light weight around 6 ounces (0.17kg) – 10 ounces (0.28 kg). Generally, the lighter a chain is the more likely it is to be affected by wind or other factors causing it to swing.

A heavy chain although adds extra weight on the ceiling, can minimize the swinging to some extent but it is not applicable on all types of chandeliers. Some chandeliers looks good with thin chains only.

A thin rod can go seamlessly with all types of chandeliers whether glass, metal, ceramic as well as plastic chandelier.

Does shortening the chain reduces swinging of chandelier?

Shortening the chain of chandelier is not a good practice. As every room has a particular requirement of height at which the chandelier must hang depending on how high the ceiling is.

Higher ceilings require a chandelier to hang a little low. In those situations trimming down the length of the chain is not practical.

While shortening will eventually stop swinging but as long as there is more than one link in the chain, there will always be a chance of swinging of light fixture. Apart from that chain with only one or two links is meaningless.

Does swagging a chandelier reduces its swinging?

For indoors as well as outdoors, swagging a chandelier by means like adding fringes, shades or decorative materials increases the surface area of the chandelier that interacts with the wind. Thus, wind will have more area to exert its force.

Hence, there is ultimately a greater chance of swinging of chandelier by swagging either the chain or whole body of chandelier.

Swagging is good for enhancing the look of a chandelier but it is not effective in reducing swings. Only restricting the movement of chain itself is effective.

Additional information

Factors that cause chandelier to swing.

For indoors as well as outdoor hanging chandeliers there are may factors that can contribute to the swinging of chandelier. Being aware of them can help significantly to mitigate them.Let’s see them one by one.

Chandelier hanging indoors

Intensity of shutting or opening the door

In an indoor area for eg. in a bedroom, foyer, kitchen, bathroom etc. with doors closed there is a particular pressure of air.

When the door is opened suddenly, this pressure changes suddenly and air starts moving towards low-pressure zone. This air can easily make chandelier to move if it is hanging with a chain. So one easy trick is to always open the doors slowly so that air pressure does not change instantly.

Movements on the upper floor

Although this factor have a nominal effect on the chandelier but it does contribute to swinging a swinging to some extent.

For light fixture that hangs on apartments, there is usually a floor above. People on above floor can also cause vibration in ceiling and depending on the intensity of vibrations the chain chandelier can swing to some extent.

To stop swinging due to this reason, again a rod attached with chain will help.

Chandelier hanging outdoors

Birds sitting on chandelier

For outdoor chandeliers along with wind, birds sitting on the chandelier can also cause it to swing. Birds cannot be just stopped to sit on chandeliers and if a cage is installed around the chandelier then it ruins the look of it.

Hence, only attaching a rod will help in reducing swings. A plastic rod is also weatherproof giving them another edge over the metal rods.

How to Install a Pendant Light

Remove the Old Light Using an appropriate screwdriver, remove the screws holding the light casing. Keep a hand on the fixture when removing the last screws to ensure it doesn’t fall. Tip Consider snapping a photo of the wire connections before removing the light. This can help you navigate connections for the new light.

Note and Mark the Wire Connections The fixture should be attached to three wires: the ground wire, the neutral wire, and the hot wire. These wires are color-coded. The hot wire from the switch is usually black or red, but not always. The neutral wires should be white or gray, and the ground wire should be green, or bare copper. Make note of which wire in the ceiling is connected to the black fixture wire, as that indicates which one is “hot.” Also note which wire is connected to the white fixture wire, or the “neutral” wire. You’ll want to replicate this when you attach the new fixture. Tip If your house was built before about 1970, you might not have a ground wire. If the ceiling box is metal and the old fixture has a bare wire connected to a screw in the box, that’s the ground.

Disconnect the Wires Take the hot wires apart first, then the neutrals. Take the ground wires apart last. Once the old fixture is free, set it aside. Remove any old mounting plate or hardware. Using a wire stripper or combination tool, strip the wire insulation, if necessary, to expose about 1/2 inch of wire.

Install the Mounting Bracket Your new fixture should have a mounting bracket, plate, or strap. Attach this to the junction box with the included screws. Use a level to ensure the mounting bracket fits straight and true.

Check the Hanging Height Lift your new fixture into place and gauge the height. If the final result will be too low or too high, release the set screw in the cover and adjust the cord to the desired length.

Attach the Wires Look at the wires on the fixture. If necessary, strip the insulation from the wires, leaving about 1/2 inch of bare wire on each. Lift the light fixture again. Employ a helper, if possible, to hold the light fixture while you attach the wires. Connect the ground first, then the neutral, and then the hot wire. Twist the bare wires together and secure each set with wire nuts on the ends. Tip If you don’t have a helper and your light fixture is heavy or bulky, use a piece of coat hanger wire, bent in an “S” shape and hooked onto the mounting bracket, to support the fixture while you connect the wires.

Close Up the Junction Box Once all the wires are firmly connected, attach the cover to the junction box with the included screws. Gently tuck the wires into the box, keeping them neat and ensuring no wires are pinched or protruding from the cover.

How do I Restrain a Wind Blown Outdoor Pendant Light?

Hold a level horizontally under the base of the pendant light and keep it even as you make a small mark on the light post or adjacent wall at the base height. Make a second mark opposite the first at the same height.

Twist the screw rings straight in to the marks on the wall or post. You may need to drill slightly narrower guide holes before screwing in the rings if the wall or post is hard. Send the screw rings in until none of the threads are visible.

Tie steel wire to the screw rings and connect the untied ends to the base of the pendant light. Use pliers to twist the wire onto the pendant light and both screw rings until there is very little slack. Push on the pendant light to test the effect of the stabilizing wires.
