READ ALONG TO PRACTICE YOUR ENGLISH AND TO LEARN THE MEANING OF BRICK AND MORTAR: So if you look at the wall behind me this right here is a brick and this stuff in the middle between the bricks is called mortar. So we have bricks and we have mortar but we also use this phrase to describe something else. We have what we call brick and mortar businesses. A brick and mortar business is a business that has an actual building, as opposed to online businesses. So every since we started to have online businesses we needed a way to distinguish between businesses that have online stores and businesses that have stores in the real world. So we decided to say that stores that exist in the real world we would call brick and mortar stores. So if you drive to my local town there are a lot of brick and mortar stores. If you go online you can find stores like Amazon.
So if you look at these. They’re bricks and they were put here by a person that we call a bricklayer. A bricklayer is a person who lays bricks. So they mix up a whole bunch of mortar and they get a whole bunch of bricks and they work at laying bricks all nicely in a row. So the person who puts bricks up to form a wall is called a bricklayer.
