If the carrier bearing loosens, it can separate from the bracket and clunk as the driveshaft spins. Since the driveshaft will spin faster with the accelerating pedal depressed, you might feel a vibration as the engine works harder.

The driveshaft sits between the transmission or transfer case and the differential. On many vehicles it has two u-joints. On extended vehicles or those with extended wheelbases, the driveshaft is longer and has at least three u-joints and a carrier bearing. The carrier bearing adds support to the center of the driveshaft, mitigating balance issues and creating less opportunity for flexing or vibrating under acceleration.
If the carrier bearing loosens, this can affect the rotation and balance of the driveshaft, creating vibration.
2. Rusty, Worn, Dry, or Binding Carrier Bearings or U-Joints
If there’s a problem with the carrier bearing, there’s likely another issue with the driveshaft that’s causing it. The internal bearings on the carrier bearings can dry out or wear, and this can be heard as a grinding or spinning noise if the carrier bearings are bad.
U-joints can also bind or freeze up over time from use and corrosion. The bearings on the u-joints can also dry out, causing them to bind or create resistance from a lack of grease. If a u-joint is binding, it can create a shake that can damage the rubber on the carrier bearing and loosen it over time.
The rubber on the carrier bearings can break down and loosen over time from normal wear and tear, but usually from bad u-joints. If the rubber is protruding from the seal in the bracket and is not secured as tightly, it’s time to replace the carrier bearing.
How to Check and Diagnose the Carrier Bearing and U-Joints
Steps to Check and Diagnose the Carrier Bearing and U-Joints Remove the Driveshaft Remove the nuts from the carrier bearing bracket and slowly remove the bracket. Test and inspect the carrier bearing for excessive movement, cracks, or damage. Remove the driveshaft and the inspect the u-joints Check for a Bad Carrier Bearing Try to spin the bearing and listen for a spinning or whirring noise. Wiggle the carrier bearing bracket and check for excessive play—there should be little to no movement. Check the rubber for excessive dry-rotting and cracking. If any of these symptoms appear, check the u-joints for a potential and likely further cause.
Check for a Bad U-Joint Move the u-joint up and down and side to side, and spin it around, feeling for tightness or binding. The u-joint should be able to move freely in these directions. Look at all the u-joints for rusting or corrosion that may cause binding. Remove the cap from the u-joint and inspect the inside roller bearings for grease. Dusty and a rusted or red interior means there’s no grease, causing overheating and eventually an issue, meaning the u-joint needs to be replaced.

Your UTV’s carrier bearing is really good at keeping secrets. It rides in a thick rubber isolator to reduce vibration and tends to get drowned out by your loud motor. But when it goes bad, there are telltale signs of it.
So today, we’re talking about carrier bearing noise and other symptoms of a bad carrier bearing to look out for.
What Does Bad Carrier Bearing Noise Sound Like?
The first sign of a bad carrier bearing is the howling noise it makes. It sounds similar to loud tire noise. It should be apparent to anybody riding in the cab because the drive shaft and carrier bearing run just under the thin floorboards.
You may hear the howling only at certain speeds too. It might be silent if you’re crawling through a technical spot and start complaining when you give it full throttle.
When the damage gets worse, you might start hearing a clunk noise rather than howling.
But what actually causes carrier bearing noise?

While there’s typically no scheduled maintenance for your side-by-side’s carrier bearing, the grease can wear down over time. You can still grease them with a needle tip to help keep them running smooth.
If they run dry too long, the ball bearings themselves can wear out. This is where the majority of the noise comes from. If the bearings aren’t running smooth, they’ll increase friction, heat, and noise.
If your bearing is in an exceptionally bad condition or you have a U-joint that’s going bad, the carrier that holds your bearing can start to wear out. This type of breakdown results in a clunkier sound.
Other Carrier Bearing Symptoms to Look Out For
Noise is almost always the first symptom of a bad carrier bearing, but it’s not necessarily the easiest to notice. Along with noise comes vibration, and if you know what you’re looking for, you won’t miss it.
Any time you start a ride, you should start off slow for a minute so you can make sure your machine feels right. You can feel a bad carrier bearing right away if you touch center console or put your hand on the shifter.
You’re more likely to notice vibration in those places than on the gas pedal, but different makes and models carry vibration around the machine in different ways. Pay attention to the way your machine feels when it’s working right, and you’ll be able to tell if something’s off right away.
Your stock carrier bearing will tell you it’s bad in a few different ways. Listen for a howling noise coming from your UTV. It will sound like loud tire noise. A bad bearing will also cause the center console and shifter to vibrate when you touch them.

How to Check for Carrier Bearing Issues
Once you know there’s something wrong with your carrier bearing, there are a few easy steps you can follow to confirm the issue and figure out if it’s your bearing or U-joint that’s going bad.
Lift your machine Remove your skid plate Try moving your drive shaft—if the bearing is bad, you’ll notice some play Try twisting the drive shaft—if the U-joint is bad, the shaft will rotate a good amount before engaging the U-joint and turning the other half of the drive shaft.
