Should I Choose CO2 or Green Gas? If you are looking for performance, CO2 may be your best bet. CO2 is a higher-pressure gas and depending on the make of the pistol can provide a harder recoil on blowback airsoft pistols. And CO2 performs better in colder weather, although it is temperature dependent as well.

What’s cheaper CO2 or green gas?

Green Gas is also more cost efficient. Green Gas costs anywhere from $10-20 for a can, and depending on your gun, you can be getting more than 800 shots out of a can. Finally, because you can just top off the mag, many people find it easier to ensure you have a full mag when using Green Gas.

Does green gas work in cold weather?

Unfortunately, in this scenario, there is barely anything you can do, it’s just science. For green gas pistols, you can try to keep your magazines deep within your pockets to try to keep them warm. Pressurized gas cannot be shipped via 3-day, 2nd day, or next-day air services.

Pressurized gas cannot be shipped outside of the lower 48 states of the U.S.A.

All non-qualifying orders will be canceled and refunded immediately.

KWA Green Gas is a high performance propellant with added isobutane and silicone oil added for optimum performance. Prolong the life of your seals and airsoft investment with the best quality green gas in airsoft. Don’t risk the performance of your KWA weapon and settle for cheap imitations with impurities. Non-ozone depleting. Final packaging may differ from image shown.

Compatibility: All gas powered airsoft guns

Capacity: 13.5 oz weight with 8 fl oz of gas per canister

Material: Metal canister

Case: 12 canisters (THIS LISTING IS FOR A SINGLE CANISTER)

Output Pressure: 115+/- PSI at 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius)

Directions for Use: Invert can and make sure charging nozzle is directly perpendicular to the valve stem. Press nozzle into magazine reservoir for 2-3 seconds. Repeat as necessary until reservoir is full. Valve misalignment will cause gas leak when charging and result in an inadequate charge. For best performance, allow your airsoft gun magazine to reach room temperature before and during use. Rapid firing may cause gas in magazine to freeze. If this occurs, remove magazine and allow magazine to warm to room temperature before continuing.

Technical Measures: Comply with applicable regulations. Cylinders should be stored upright with valve protection cap in place and firmly secured to prevent falling. Keep at temperatures below 52°C / 125°F.

Storage Conditions: Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Keep in fireproof place. Store locked up.

Can I see your test results?

Is green gas propane or is it like propane?

Green gas is not like propane. It is propane. Green gas is not R22, or Co2, or “CH2FCF3CH3” (as seen on some bottles). It is merely run-of-the-mill propane, with a different scent added.

So it’s really propane? How can you be sure?

Samples were sent to the Analest Laboratory at the University of Toronto where 3 brands of green gas (Jet, Green Power, Shooting Air) were analyzed with a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, an industry standard for organic gas assaying. All 3 gases were shown to be propane. Additionally 3 more brands have shown to be similarly flammable and exert the same pressure. Test results, discussion and conclusions can be found in the Lab Data section, please read the Laboratory Analysis of Green Gas for more in-depth information.

So, why should I fill my gun with propane instead of green gas?

If you use green gas, you’re already using propane. Domestic propane is cheaper, comes in a safe container, and is available at any local hardware store. Airsoft bottled propane (green gas) has to be imported (which can take a long time).

Isn’t it flammable?

Green gas has always been flammable. Now that we know it’s propane, nothing has changed. You should never ignite propane/green gas, or release it near an open flame. However, propane is fairly safe for normal use – we already use butane (another flammable gas) in many consumer products, such as shaving cream and hairspray, and propane is used as an industrial refridgerant (it’s also known as HC290).

How come green gas smells different than fuel propane?

Fuel propane is scented with mercaptan odourants for leak detection. By itself, propane has very little smell. Different bottlers of fuel propane use different odourants and so do green gas bottlers hence the different smells. Green gas and fuel propane are primarily propane so they all perform similarly in the end.

Some brands of green gas are lubricated. Is propane?

Propane is not lubricated. However, the design of the AI Gungas propane adaptor makes it easy to mix silicone oil into your magazine fill charge, and includes an instructional video detailing exactly how to do it. Airsoft Innovations also carries ultra-lightweight silicone oil ideal for GBB maintenance.

What about my slide breaking, or seals being damaged?

Green gas is propane, we’ve been using it all the time, there is no difference. Add a few drops of silicone oil, as shown in the AI Propane Adaptor instruction manual, and your gun will be just as well off as with “green gas”. You shouldn’t use propane/green gas in any gun that is not designed for higher pressures (e.g. un-upgraded Western Arms GBB’s). Some GBBs are designed expressly for the use of HFC134a (a lower pressure gas). Propane is not a good substitute for HFC134a in GBBs designed for HFC134a.

Will my gun perform the same on green gas and propane?

I have some chrony results comparing propane from a Coleman stove tank and a brand of gas called “Shooting Air”. Tests were conducted with a SVI 3.9″ with metal slide shooting 0.25g bbs. Shots were done with a completely filled mag allowed to warm up to room temperature for 30min. Shots were fired every 5 seconds to reduce cooldown.

Propane (fps) 289 285 283 275 273 Shooting Air (fps) 281 282 281 277 280

Will propane damage my gun?

GBBs modified to handle green gas (we really have to stop saying green gas) are already propane ready. Certain GBBs in stock form (WA, TM to name a few) are not propane ready. The higher pressure of propane can overstress a stock plastic slide and cause it crack or completely break. Still, many users fire them on propane as they consider the performace/durability tradeoff acceptable.

Are propane tanks safe to carry in the field?

Yes. Most disposable propane fuel containers feature overpressure relief valves which allow propane to leak out before a can is over-pressurized and explodes. They are also of heavy steel construction which withstands very high pressure. Conversely, green gas bottles are thin walled aluminum without overpressure protection. In a few cases, these containers have exploded with frightening result. In one case, shrapnel from an exploded green gas can perforated a vehicle roof.

How come we’ve been using propane, and nobody knew?

The suspicion has floated around for a few years, but until now, no one got around to actually testing the stuff in a lab. Green gas has always been mislabelled, with fake chemical formulas and incorrect pressure specifications – nobody questioned them.

Can I see your test results?

Absolutely. I’ve compiled all my testing data, results and conclusions in the Lab Data section, please read the Laboratory Analysis of Green Gas for more in-depth information.

Green Gas vs CO2 for Airsoft Pistols

In the world of air pistols the most common method of pushing BBs or pellets out of the barrel is via compressed gas. After all these are airguns we are talking about. When it comes to repeating and blowback air pistols there are two major propellants that shooters will encounter: 12 gram CO2 and green gas. For those of you who have only shot .177 caliber pistols, you are most likely familiar with those small capsules of fun. But what is green gas? Stay tuned and we’ll flesh out some facts about each and how you can best use the appropriate platforms.

Carbon Dioxide Air Gun Capsules

CO2 powers nearly all BB pistols and a good deal of 6mm airsoft pistols. 12g CO2 cartridges are easy to find. Nearly any department store and just about all outdoors centric stores, like your local airsoft dealers, are going to have at least one brand of CO2 on the shelf. Airguns have used CO2 as a propellant for scores of years at this point. Reasons are many, but suffice to say that CO2 is cheap, reliable and has just one major achilles heel. That disadvantage would be temperature sensitivity. Once the mercury dips below the 60 degree mark, the valve on a CO2 powered air gun can freeze up after a succession of shots. If you take your time you can prevent or at least delay this from happening, but when it gets cold enough things just grind to a halt pretty quick.

Depending on the quantity the 12 gram CO2 cartridges are purchased in, the cost per unit usually ranges from $.50 to $.90. In .177 most pistols will get between 70 and 90 shots per cartridge. This works out to a cost per shot of about $.01 and $.02. Depending on the model of CO2 powered gun you are using, the CO2 cartridge may be housed in either a drop free magazine or it could be located in the pistol’s grip. 12 gram CO2 can be found powering standard air pistols as well as airguns that shoot plastic 6mm airsoft BBs.

Green Gas for Airsoft Guns

Green gas pistols are ran by a propellant mixture of propane and silicone oil, like Elite Force Fuel. But unlike CO2, green gas is only used to power 6mm airsoft pistols. Since airsoft BBs are much lighter than steel BBs, not much power is needed to launch them at a sufficient velocity to get the job done. Additionally, since the sport of airsoft involves shooting the 6mm BBs at other players with proper eye pro and face protection, velocity is regulated at most airsoft fields. Generally that threshold is around 350 FPS, a speed that allows airsoft guns to be accurate and have range, but not so fast that players have an elevated risk of injury.*

Airsoft play takes place in all sorts of weather conditions. It’s not uncommon to see players engaged in a match in blowing desert dust, rain, or extreme humidity. The addition of silicone oil to the propellant helps keep the gun running reliably during use. It is also very fast and easy to recharge the gas reservoir on GBB (green gas blowback) air pistols. However, GBB handguns tend to get only 30-40 shots per fill. This is not really viewed as a disadvantage when it comes to airsoft milsim–realism in shot count and magazine capacity is preferred in this field of use because as we all know that in real life magazines run empty from time to time.

The good news for a shooter adopting a GBB style pistol is that a single can of Elite Force FUEL will power a pistol for about 1800 shots. With a cost of about $15 per can, training and practicing with green gas airsoft guns is very economical, running just barely above one cent per shot. On the downside, green gas is not as readily available as CO2. Unless there is an airsoft specialty store close to you, chances are you won’t be able to find this airsoft fuel at your local sporting goods store.

For supplementing firearms training you may be better served by a GBB style airsoft gun. 6mm airsoft BBs will still ricochet, but not nearly as bad as steel BBs should they hit a hard surface. However, like CO2, green gas is temperature sensitive, but the airsoft GBB option can be easily utilized in a heated garage during the winter months– that is if you can move the cars out for a spell!
