Indulgent chocolate chip cookie cake is soft and rich in the center, chewy on the edges, studded with chocolate chips, and decorated with chocolate buttercream. This fun dessert comes together quickly– skip the cookie dough chilling and rolling into individual cookie dough balls. Everything we love about chocolate chip cookies in cookie cake form!
Meet your new favorite dessert! Today’s chocolate chip cookie cake is adapted from 2 of my most popular cookie recipes loved by bakers worldwide– soft chocolate chip cookies and chewy chocolate chip cookies. The result is soft-baked, chewy, chocolatey decadence. I’m a fan of huge cookies that serve a couple people (looking at you giant monster cookies and giant snickerdoodles) and this cookie cake is no exception. It’s essentially one really big cookie that feeds a crowd!
You’ll love how quickly and easy this cookie cake comes together. We’ll bake the cookie dough in a pan, so no cookie dough chilling required (just like my soft & chewy chocolate chip cookie bars). Garnished with chocolate buttercream and your favorite toppings, it’s a festive dessert perfect for any celebration.

No Cookie Dough Chilling!
Because we’re baking the cookie dough in a cake pan or pie dish, we don’t have to chill the cookie dough or roll individual cookies. Simply make the cookie dough and spread it into your dish. It will never overspread because it’s contained in the dish– simple and easy! Here are all of my no chill cookie recipes. By the way, you could absolutely make this cookie cake with the dough from these double chocolate chip cookies. Same bake time as below.
Toppings for Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake
While this cookie cake delicious on it’s own, chocolate buttercream is always a good idea! And turns this giant cookie into a true cake. My favorite chocolate buttercream is far from basic– it’s incredibly creamy, silky, smooth, and rich. Even though it’s a wonderfully creamy, it holds its shape beautifully. So it’s perfect for piping even the most intricate and fancy designs– I used a simple Wilton 1M tip for today’s cake.
Have fun and get creative with your toppings: instead of chocolate buttercream, try peanut butter frosting, chocolate ganache, salted caramel, whipped cream, ice cream, sprinkles, or extra chocolate chips.
This is the perfect recipe to make when you’re looking for something just as festive as birthday cake but a little more exciting than chocolate chip cookies!

Preserving Goodies: Fridge, Freezer, or Countertop? – Mrs. Fields Secrets
If you want to take care of your goodies and keep them fresh (and I know you do) you have to know how. Here’s a go-to guide for goodie greatness:
Cookie Dough: Refrigerate up to three days (in fact, it tastes better if you “age” it at least 24 hours), and freeze up to three months wrapped tightly in a few layers of plastic wrap.
Cookies: Store in air-tight containers at room temperature for 2-3 days. Add a slice of bread to the container to keep the moisture content consistent. Otherwise, freeze for up to three months. Do not refrigerate cookies—it will dry them out!
Brownies: Allow brownies to cool completely before storing on the countertop in an air-tight container. Place a slice of bread inside the container to help the moisture content. Brownies don’t belong in the fridge, but they do freeze beautifully. Wrap cooled, cut brownies in 2-3 layers of plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe, air-tight container in the freezer for up to three months.
Cakes: Frosted one-layer cakes can be wrapped tightly and stored on the countertop. Layered cakes can sit on the countertop in a topped cake stand, or under an inverted bowl. If the cake has fluffy frosting, allow a tiny bit of air inside by sticking a teaspoon handle under the rim. Cakes with whipped cream-based frostings should be stored in the fridge. Cakes freeze well, up to six months, when triple-wrapped in plastic wrap. Always thaw cakes at room temperature on the countertop.
Pies: The countertop is the place for pies if you’re enjoying them now. If saving for later, wrap in a plastic bag and freeze up to four months. Keep away from the fridge, which will dry out the crust.
Fudge: Wrap fudge in wax paper, then place in an air-tight container for freshness. Keep in the fridge for up to three weeks, or the freezer for several months. Fudge is also safe on the countertop for several days, but should be kept out of direct sunlight.

How to Store this Homemade Cookie Cake
Once you have made you homemade cookie cake, you want to make sure you keep it covered in an airtight container or using plastic wrap. Once the cookie cake has been cut down into pieces, a freezer bag is also an option. This will keep the cookie from getting hard and stale. The cookie cake should be stored at room temperature or it can be moved to the freezer if you have more cookie than you will be able to eat before it goes bad.
How Long Does Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake Last
When you make this cake, you might not finish it all at once. In that case you will want to make sure you are storing it properly so that it lasts. When stored properly the cookie cake will last about 5 days. You can also freeze the cookie and it will last up to 3 months when it is wrapped well to prevent freezer burn. If you have decorated the chocolate chip cookie cake with frosting, you might want to freeze the pieces of cookie first so that the frosting has time to harden and not stick to the plastic.
Variations to Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake Recipe
While this cookie cake recipe is a basic one, it is perfect to be able to change it up. There are many ways to make this cookie cake with different variations. Some of my favorite ideas are:
Uses Flavored Chocolate Chips: There are so many different flavors of baking chips out there and you can swap them for the chocolate chips or add them together. You can use peanut butter, toffee, mint or white chocolate chips. There are also strawberry chips, butterscotch and caramel that would taste great in this cookie cake.
Add Extracts: Adding extracts is a great way to add additional flavors into your cookie dough. Beside vanilla, there are peppermint, root beer, lemon, butter, and many other flavors. Each one would add a delicious twist to the cookie cake.
Add Candy: You can add chopped candy into the cookie dough itself, or once the cookie cake has finished baking and you are ready to decorate it, you can add candy to the top. Your guests’ eyes, especially the kids, will light up when they see this cookie cake covered in candy.
