Who Owns Merrell Shoes?

Karhu purchased Merrell in 1987 and moved production to Asia. This move cut retail prices and expanded sales.

In 1988 Merrell had over $4 million in sales and by 1990 that number reached $10 million for the first time.

The company saw unrivaled success and in 1992 saw sales reach over $20 million and within a few years, Merrell products were being sold in 22 countries.

Wolverine World Wide purchased the company in 1997, the same year the company enjoyed $23 million in sales.

How much is Merrell Worth?

The Merrell brand had sales of $500 million in 2010.

Wolverine had $2.25 billion in revenue in 2019.

Wolverine World Wide also holds the following brands; Bates, Cat Footware, Chaco, Harley-Davidson Footware, Hush Puppies, HYTEST, Keds, Saucony, Sperry, Stride Rite, and Wolverine.

Where are Merrell Shoes Made?

Merrell Shoes are made both in the United States and in Asian countries like Vietnam. Since they are owned by Wolverine Worldwide there are some lines in the Merrell shoe selection that are made in the US.

Brand Origin of Merrell

Merrell was established by two executives from Rossignol ski company, Clark Matis and John Schweizer, in 1981. Randal Ivan Merrell joined the team and left his private boot making business where he built highly regarded custom hiking boots that sold for $500.

Randy brought the craftsmanship, Matis had the creative and marketing angle and Schweizer was the guy with the business skill and the right connections. Together they made beautiful things happen.

The new lines they developed were planned to be manufactured in Italy, a leader in the shoe industry. In 1983 the Merrell company delivered its first product to market, east coast retailers specializing in hiking gear.

R.I. Merrell wasn’t satisfied with his life as part of this huge global enterprise and promptly sold his shares in the company in 1986. Mr. Merrell returned to his previous life as a custom boot maker.

Evolution of the Merrell Brand and Shoes

The manufacture of the shoes under the original owners was primarily conducted in Italy.

When Karhu bought the company in 1987 they moved production to Asia and cut costs and increased sales. Karhu took the company from $4 million to 10 million by 1990, and in two more had doubled that to $20 million in sales.

When Merrell was sold to Wolverine Worldwide in 1997 it was being sold in 22 countries and had $23 in sales for that year.

Wolverine manufactured Hush Puppies and Wolverine boots and considered a large footwear corporation.

Wolverine started the company down the trail of lighter weight materials. The first of its type, the Jungle Runner was not a consumer success.

Clark Matis, an original founder, lead a team that came up with the idea to use an aggressive outsole design combined with a slip-on upper made of pigskin suede, something perfected and used in Hush Puppies.

This work continued and lead to the introduction to the signature shoe the Merrell Jungle Moc. This comfortable and rugged shoe was an instant hit.

The year 2003 brought the collection up to date with a partnership with Sport Biomechanics, Inc., that updated their customized women’s footwear.

You may remember the toe-shoe craze, well Merrell was one of the first major brands to create a line of shoes in that style. They called it Barefoot and partnered with Vibram to create their one of a kind shoe line.

In 2007 the brand expanded to include apparel and accessories.

By 2010 the annual sales totaled $500 million and was being sold in 151 countries.

In 2011 the company operated 116 of its own concept stores around the world.

How to clean Merrell Shoes

Cleaning: When needed, brush away any surface dirt with a soft brush. After long, rugged use, wash with mild soap and warm water. Rinse well to remove all soap.

Drying: Open shoe or boot fully, remove the insole and laces and dry at room temperature. Do not heat, as doing so can compromise any adhesives or materials used in constructing your footwear.

Merrell hiking boots & shoes: What do the pros think?

Merrell may be a good match for day hikes with light packs or for everyday use

Merrell is a popular brand for hiking boots and hiking shoes. It’s got legions of fans online who are quick to post “I love my Merrells” every time someone asks for hiking footwear recommendations. But Merrells are much more popular on Facebook than they are in the outdoor industry.

Why do Merrells get mixed reviews? My Merrell brand review has the inside scoop on the pros and cons of this popular brand: What are the best Merrells for hikers? How do Merrell hiking boots and shoes stack up against other brands? And why do many people in the outdoor industry not recommend Merrells to their friends, family members, and customers? Here’s my honest review of Merrell hiking boots and hiking shoes, based on my outdoor industry experience.

Merrell: brand overview

Merrell has been around for almost forty years. The company initially set out to sell expensive, custom-made hiking boots for the outdoor specialty market. When the original owners sold the brand in 1986, however, Merrell moved its manufacturing to Asia and shifted its focus to the mass market. Since 1997, it’s been a subsidiary of Wolverine Worldwide: a Michigan-based company that also owns Wolverine work boots, Keds, and Hush Puppies.

Merrell is best known for moderately priced outdoor footwear that blurs the boundary between casual shoes and athletic shoes. The brand’s best seller is the Merrell Jungle Moc, a casual slip on shoe. The Merrell Moab (reviewed below) is known as “the world’s best-selling hiker.” However, many people wear it as a work shoe or an everyday “trail to town” shoe–not as a hiking shoe.

Merrell Moab Lows are best sellers

Merrell’s popularity probably has more to do with price than performance. It’s more of a budget brand than a premium brand for hiking boots and hiking shoes. If hiking boots were beers, Merrells would be Budweisers–not craft beers.

Many outdoor industry professionals rank Merrell a notch or two below the best brands. That’s because their footwear is made for the mass market, not serious hikers. Compared to premium brands, Merrell footwear falls short in foot and ankle support, waterproofing, durability, and overall quality.

When I worked at a hiking and backpacking shop, none of my co-workers hiked in Merrells. Most of them would not recommend Merrell to hikers, either.

That being said, Merrell may be a good brand for people who wear hiking shoes as everyday shoes. For me, that’s the brand’s best niche. It’s also a good brand for budget-oriented hikers, hikers with wide feet, and casual hikers who mostly stick to well-maintained trails. But Merrell is not a good brand if you’re after solid ankle support, reliable waterproofing, and overall quality.

best Merrell hiking boots

When hikers pimp their Merrells on Facebook, they probably mean the Merrell Moab. The mid-cut Moab is Merrell’s best selling hiking boot, and the low-cut Moab is their best selling hiking shoe. That’s true for both men and women. The Moab is also my top Merrell recommendation for hikers—based more on cost and relative value than on performance. New for Summer 2022, Merrell has just released the new Moab 3:

Merrell Moab III Mid

Men’s Moab Mid Women’s Moab Mid

Meet the best-selling hiking boot in the world. For better or worse, the Merrell Moab II Mid is more of a shoe-boot hybrid than a traditional hiking boot. It’s not as stiff or supportive as the average hiking boot, and it’s not very tall for a “mid” cut. That “out of the box comfort” makes the Moab popular with beginners and casual hikers who prefer the feel of casual sneakers to serious hiking boots. That’s also why many serious hikers don’t recommend them: there’s not much difference between the Moab and your average sneaker, either.

Still, the Merrell Moab gets plenty of votes for “best value” or “best budget hiking boot” from outdoor magazines and websites. It offers a little foot and ankle support and features Vibram outsoles, which is a plus. They’re an economical choice for hikers on a budget and may be a good fit for hikers with wide feet. Moabs may be good work boots for those who work on their feet, and the non-waterproof Moab Vent is a decent desert hiking boot. However, they’re not a great pick for hikers who prefer harder trails, carry a heavy pack, or want hiking boots with good ankle support.

Summer 2022 update: Merrell has just released the new Moab III! It comes in standard and wide sizes and available in non-waterproof (“Ventilator”), “waterproof” ($20 more), and Gore Tex/Prime (most expensive):

women’s options

men’s options

best Merrell hiking shoes

Merrell Moab III Low

Men’s Moab Ventilator Low Women’s Moab 3 Low

This is Merrell’s best selling hiking shoe. The low-cut Moab provides less ankle protection than the mid-cut boot above; however, I prefer the low-cut because it’s lighter, less expensive, and works well as a “trail to town” shoe that you can wear on the trail and around town. The Moab Ventilator (non-waterproof) Low makes a decent trail shoe for desert day hikes. And the low cut offers a little more support, traction, and durability than a sneaker or gym shoe. Overall, the Moab III Low is not a strong choice for hardcore hikers and backpackers; however, it may be a good budget buy for the casual day hiker or hikers looking for an everyday outdoor shoe.

Once again, the low-cut Moab is available in several styles, including standard and wide sizes, non-waterproof (ventilator), waterproof, and Gore Tex (most expensive). Here are current prices at leading outdoor retailers:

women’s options

men’s options

Merrell Nova 2 (men) and Antora 2 (women)

Men-Specific Nova 2 Women-Specific Antora 2

Merrell also makes two gender-specific trail shoes that might interest hikers: the men’s Nova 2 and women’s Antora 2. The Nova and Antora are two more Merrells that blur the boundary between everyday shoes and athletic shoes–and also blur the boundary between trail running shoes and hiking shoes. For lack of a better term, it’s a light-weight hiking sneaker that’s lighter than the Moab with a little more support than typical trail running shoes. Many casual hikers and beginners like this light and flexible feel over the fit and feel of a true hiking shoe. Each shoe features a gender-specific fit and both standard and wide sizes. If you’re looking for a lightweight shoe with more of a hiking midsole, the Merrell Nova (men’s version) and Antora (women’s version) might work as “trail to town” shoes or lightweight trail shoes for fast-and-light hikes on well maintained trails.

Overall, Merrells may be a slight upgrade over your sneakers or cross trainers. But it’s not a “best brand.” It’s more of a “budget brand” made for the mass market. (Pro Tip: “Out of the box comfort” is a marketing term that usually means crappy foot and ankle support.)

Moab Ventilators may be good hiking shoes for desert day hikes

Merrell: best fits and best matches

Is Merrell a good brand for you? As with all brands, that depends on your feet, your budget, and the kinds of hiking you do. In my experience, these are the brand’s best fits and best matches:

Best Fits : wide feet. Merrells run wide and are also available in wide sizes. Hikers with narrow feet may need to go with another brand.

: wide feet. Merrells run wide and are also available in wide sizes. Hikers with narrow feet may need to go with another brand. Best Match: “trail to town” shoes. At Appalachian Outdoors, the biggest Merrell fans generally wore them as hiking shoes and everyday shoes. For me, that “trail to town” use is Merrell’s best niche. However, I sometimes recommended Merrell Moabs to (1) hikers on a budget (with wide feet) and (2) day hikers (with wide feet) who mostly hike easy to moderate trails.

Merrell: an OK budget brand

Many hikers assume that Merrell is one of the best brands for hiking boots and hiking shoes, due to its popularity. But it’s more of a budget brand in terms of quality and performance. It may be a top brand at sporting good chain stores, but it may be a bottom shelf brand at REI or your local hiking and backpacking specialty shop.

Still, Merrells may be good enough for the average day hiker and weekend warrior. Those sales numbers don’t lie, after all. And many Merrell lovers wouldn’t consider buying any other brand. If you’re looking to hike in a casual boot or shoe that doesn’t break the bank, this is probably your brand! That’s especially true the Keen has raised its prices above the budget price point.

History [ edit ]

Origins [ edit ]

Merrell All Out Crush Light trail running shoes

Merrell was established in 1981 when two executives for the Rossignol ski company, Clark Matis and John Schweizer, decided to launch a new maker of hiking boots.[1] The pair decided to join forces with Randal Ivan Merrell (R.I. Merrell), a maker of highly praised custom boots which retailed for $500 a pair.[2] Matis set to work designing a more affordable high-performance boot, which was developed in 1982. Plans were made for production of the new line in factories located in Italy, a leading exporter of footwear to the world market at the time.[2]

In 1983, the new Merrell company delivered its first product to the market, making shipments to a pair of east coast retailers specializing in hiking gear.[2]

In 1986, Randy Merrell sought to return to his previous life as a maker of custom boots and sold his share of the company bearing his name. That same year the company sold its 25,000th pair of boots.[2]

Sale to Karhu [ edit ]

In 1987, Merrell was purchased by Karhu. The new owners moved production of Merrell products to Asia, reducing retail prices and expanding sales. In 1988, sales of Merrell products topped the $4 million mark.[2]

A period of rapid growth for Merrell followed with 1989 sales increasing by 50%, to the $6 million mark. By 1990, some 300,000 pairs of shoes and boots were being sold annually, with sales for the year topping the $10 million mark for the first time. The company became a global enterprise, with divisions established in Canada, the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and the United States.[2]

The year 1992 saw another doubling of the company’s sales volume, topping the $20 million mark. By the middle of the decade, Merrell products were being sold in 22 countries.[2]

Sale to Wolverine World Wide [ edit ]

In 1997, Karhu sold Merrell to Wolverine World Wide, a large footwear corporation which manufactures Hush Puppies shoes and Wolverine brand boots. In the year of the Wolverine acquisition, Merrell sales volume totaled $23 million.[3]

Wolverine introduced a new lighter-weight sensibility to the line, beginning with a trail running shoe called the “Jungle Runner.”[4] This initial foray into lightweight footwear was not a commercial success, but a team led by Clark Matis came up with the idea of using a very aggressive trail running outsole with a casual slip-on upper made of pigskin suede, a material previously perfected and used extensively in the Hush Puppies line.[4]

The work of Matis’ design group culminated with the introduction of what would become the brand’s signature shoe, the “Jungle Moc.” The new product was a smash success, with total shipments of Jungle Mocs hitting 3.5 million pairs by 2002. The 10 millionth pair of Jungle Mocs was shipped in 2009, with the style continuing in production to the present date.[2]

In 2007, the Merrell line was expanded yet again to include apparel and accessories.[2]

By 2010, Merrell products were being sold in 151 countries.[2] Annual sales for the brand totaled nearly $500 million in 2010.[3]

The company operates 116 of its own concept stores around the world, with another 20 to 25 new stores planned to open in 2011.[5][needs update] Merrell has declared that it is aiming for 15% of its sales to come through company stores and e-commerce sometime in the near future.[5]
