As the father of five daughters, I can only read the command Jesus gave to His disciples to “travel light” with wonder and a touch of envy. Many times we have packed up to drive to the Northwest to visit family and friends with the car literally sagging with all that we carried. It would not be very truthful for me to give the impression that my daughters and wife were the only culprits. I have been known to carry “a few” tools and spare parts in the car—just in case. When I drove a Volkswagen bus, I even carried along a spare cylinder head.

Jesus Empowers his Disciples

This week’s scripture reading – Matthew 10:1

And when he had called unto [him] his twelve disciples, he gave them power [against] unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

The Number Twelve

Why did Jesus give power to the disciples? Well, this short verse on Jesus empowers his disciples is also recorded in Mark and Luke further substantiating the event. There are many notable points worth highlighting. The first point to note is that Jesus calls twelve men to be his closest disciples and they are otherwise known as the twelve apostles (Luke 6:13). He doesn’t call nine, or ten or fifteen but twelve. Jesus confirmed that he only chose twelve to be his apostles in John 6:70, Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? In scripture, they were often nicknamed “the twelve” as noted in Mark 6:7.

Interestingly, twelve is a number that stands out in many places throughout scripture. Twelve is the number that coincides with the twelve tribes of Israel as first noted in Gen. 49:28 and in the New Testament as shown in Luke 22:30. Also of interest from scripture is that Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs in Acts 7:8 but let’s look at a few more mentions of the number twelve.

Jesus was twelve years old when he went up to Jerusalem with his mother and Joseph in Luke 2:42. After Jesus performed a miracle and created loaves of bread to feed 5,000 men, plus women and children, the remaining amount was placed in twelve baskets in John 6;13. Jesus stated there are twelve hours in a day in John 11:9. Jesus said there are twelve thrones in heaven in Matt. 19:28. He indicated that he could summon twelve legions of angles to help him in Matt. 26:53. In Revelation, there is a crown of twelve stars, twelve gates with twelve pearls, twelve tribes, twelve foundations and twelve fruits (Rev. 12:1, 21:12, 14, 21, 22:2).

Here are two more references on twelve perhaps simply for interesting trivia on Jesus empowers his disciples. Jesus healed the daughter of a man and her age was twelve (Luke 8:42). The woman who had an issue of blood that was subsequently healed by Jesus suffered for twelve years before the miraculous healing (Luke 8:43). Twelve is indeed an interesting number in scripture but this does not imply nor should it be construed that anything pertaining to twelve is related to each other. This is with the exception of the twelve apostles who will judge the twelve tribes of Israel as noted in both Matt. 19:28, Luke 22:30.

Unclean Spirits

How did jesus lead his disciples? Transitioning from here in this week’s scripture reading, Jesus then empowers the twelve apostles to have authority over unclean or evil spirits. Think about this for a moment. This means they were given power over the spiritual world and were able to cast devils or unclean spirits out of possessed people. That word unclean is used some 194 times in scripture and specifically pertaining to unclean spirits it is noted close to 25 times in the New Testament. An unclean spirit signifies something that is religiously impure, or more candidly something that is notably filthy or having an innate sense of filthiness. In a previous Bible study called Jesus Casts out Devils there is a direct correlation between devils and demons with unclean spirits. They are all from the same pit of darkness and represent nothing more than the minions of Satan.

What powers did the apostles have and is there is a list of miracles performed by the apostles? Well, further to this, Jesus empowers his disciples to heal all sick and diseased people whom they encounter during their travels. This means they were given power over physical nature. Note that small word “all” not some, not a few, but all were healed. Much like the empowerment of casting out unclean spirits, they are now empowered to physically heal people. This is not trickery or some form or magic, this is godly empowerment to do good in people who are suffering from physical ailments of any kind. The disciples were not limited by type of affliction or disease but were empowered to heal all sick and diseased people whom they encountered during their travels. Clearly, there were signs and wonders done by the apostles and demonstrates who performed miracles besides Jesus in the Bible.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name. John 1:12

Power of God

With the above stated points, perhaps now is a good time to look at the power of God since this was the source of power given to the disciples. We shall find that this is the same source of power that is given to believers in Christ in their daily walk of faith today. This is noted in the Gospel of John right in the first chapter in John 1:12, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name. It is always interesting to connect the points from these passages. In other words, to whom does Jesus give power to become the sons of God? It is to those who receive him and who believe on his name. It is not by church membership, denomination, good works, etc., it is by receiving and believing on his name.

Let’s dig a little deeper though into scripture and explore the power of Jesus. He once spoke to some of the Pharisees and his disciples and said that he has power over his own life in John 10:18, No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. Jesus continued on by saying that he received this commandment from his Father. Further on in the book of John, Jesus then commenced a lengthy prayer to the Father and it opens with him confirming that the Father has given him power over all flesh in John 17:2, As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

The Father and the Son

Do you see what stands out in these texts? The first thing, is the complete interdependence of the Son with the Father. This is illustrated by (1) the commandments given to Jesus from the Father, (2) the power over all flesh given by the Father and (3) that while Jesus gives eternal life he gives it to those the Father has given to him. This is just from a few verses in scripture but this pattern is indicative of the Father and Son relationship throughout the entire Bible. Nothing is done in isolation of each other between the Father and the Son.

As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. John 17:2

Similarly, as believers in Christ there needs to be a complete interdependence of the believer with the Lord Jesus Christ. Christianity is not to be lived in a vacuum of self-will, rather it is to be lived in submission of God’s will for your life. In light of the source of the power, believers in Christ should see it no other other way. All power is given to Jesus in heaven and in earth as stated in Matt. 28:18 and this power is from the Father. This is also how Jesus will ultimately return with power and great glory as noted in Luke 21:27.

The Christ, the Son of God

Let us close of this Bible study on Jesus empowers his disciples with an eclipsing event that took place in the presence of Caiaphas, the high priest. He was the one who questioned Jesus to determine who he was amidst the false allegations from the scribes and Pharisees. Caiaphas finally asked Jesus in frustration as noted in Matt; 26:63, But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.

This was a rather pointed question to Jesus that demanded a truthful answer and sure enough Caiaphas got a response far more than he expected. Jesus then confirmed that he was indeed the Christ, the Son of God and not only that but that he would be sitting on the right hand of power and returning in the clouds of heaven as recorded in Matt. 26:64, Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Once again, notice where the source of the power exists here with the Father and with Jesus sitting on the right hand of power.

Seek his Power

As you contemplate life as a believer or if you are merely seeking to learn what faith is all about, would you not want to have a faith that is derived from and reliant upon the power of the Father? This is the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent power that sustains all that we can see, hear, feel and sense both physically and spiritually. Why not come to Jesus now by receiving him and believing upon him for as it was previously stated, to them gave he power to become the Sons of God!

Bible Study Questions

In this Bible study on Jesus empowers his disciples, what is the prominent correlation between the twelve apostles and the twelve tribes of Israel? Hint Matt. 19:28 Can you name at least three other interesting occasions of the number twelve in scripture from references in this study? Jesus empowered his disciples to cast out unclean spirits, meaning they had power over the spiritual world, true or false? Why do you think Jesus gave the disciples so much power over spiritual and physical things? Can you name the verse from the book of John that states, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name. How would you describe the interrelationship between the Father and the Son based on this section of the study? Why do you think people choose to draw power from other, often false sources, instead of from the power of God?

Six Things Jesus Did To Equip His Disciples For Ministry

From the beginning, Jesus told the disciples that He would make them into something different: “Come, follow me,…and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). Their occupation of catching fish changed into a mission of fishing for people. Each step along the way, Jesus taught them to share with others, connect people to God, and minister to those who were in need.

When a disciple matures into a spiritual adult, the Holy Spirit brings them through a heart change:

They move from self-centered to others-centered

They become God-centered in motivation

They have the desire to serve and lead

As you see the person you are discipling begin displaying these signs of heart change, you need to give them an opportunity to serve.

Jim Putman, author of this blog, is one of the speakers at this year’s National Disciple Making Forum. Learn more and register here.

Jesus used everyday opportunities to train his disciples to serve and minister to others. One place in scripture where we can see an example of Jesus’ intentional leadership is in the feeding of the five thousand.

Read through John 6:1-13 and notice all the times Jesus had his disciples minister to the people during this event.

During this miracle, the disciples were learning about ministry as well as learning about who Jesus was. Jesus modeled intentional actions in His relationships with people. He gave the disciples hands-on experience in learning to care for others. He didn’t just have them sit back and watch Him meet peoples needs – he got them actively involved in ministering to the people around them.

So what are some places we can give the people we are discipling an opportunity to serve? If you personally serve in a ministry, one of the best things you can do is have them serve alongside you. It might not turn out to be a long-term fit as far as skill or ability goes, but serving alongside someone they know and are comfortable with will help set them up for initial success. As they become comfortable getting involved and realize the value of serving, they will be better able to look at different areas they might be equipped for.

If you are unable to find a spot for them in to serve in your church, consider inviting them along when you are serving outside of weekend services. For instance, if you are going to visit someone who is in the hospital – or helping a shut-in with yard work, invite them to come along and help. If there is an activity going on in your community that you are volunteering to help with, see if they would like to get involved. In the area I live in, we have marathons a few time a year and they need people to man the water stations and cheer people on. It is a great place to jump in and love on our community, and it makes an impression on people. Ministry doesn’t only happen in a church building.

Releasing your disciple to minister to others is an imperative part of helping them become disciple makers, and it requires you to be intentional as a leader. You need to know where the people you are discipling are in their spiritual growth and know where you are taking them.

Below are 6 things Jesus did with his disciples to prepare them for ministering to others:

Jesus brought them to a place/situation where there were others who were in need. Jesus had given them real teaching prior to this point. Jesus connected them to God and to each other. Jesus had equipped them and released them to do ministry Jesus shared truth that was new to them. Jesus modeled discipleship to them as they were all together

Jesus taught to and modeled for his disciples, fully expecting them to reach the point that they could make disciples independently. Disciples will always be dependent on God, that is why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit when he left them. But Jesus led his disciples to become spiritually mature disciples who were able to make more disciples. And we are disciples today because it worked.

8 Ways Jesus Trained Spiritual Leaders

Jesus invested deeply in his 12 disciples, preparing them to be the leaders of the church.

Jesus didn’t need people to help him. He didn’t need 12 disciples.

Yet he chose them.

He could have been born, grown in stature and wisdom, taught, been put to death, raised from the grave and returned to heaven without messing with 12 guys and their issues.

Jesus didn’t need to wrestle with things such as the tension from the men leaving their families, competing for status, arguing over who’s greatest, asking frustrating questions and an ultimate betrayal.

However, working through other leaders was God’s plan from the beginning.

They were called the 12 disciples in the Bible, but they were also leaders. Jesus taught the disciples to take responsibility to influence people for the kingdom of God. They advanced the mission of God. They were first his disciples, but also leaders. That made them spiritual leaders with a vision more significant than their own.

You and I do the same. We are responsible to select, develop and empower leaders to advance God’s purposes.

There are hundreds of books on leadership, and dozens on developing leaders. I love and appreciate many of them. But it all stems from the master developer who invested deeply in his team.

8 WAYS JESUS DEVELOPED SPIRITUAL LEADERS

1. He Selected Carefully.

Jesus spent the night in prayer before he chose the disciples (Luke 6:12–16). He didn’t rush into it, and he wanted the Father’s heart in the process. Jesus clearly chose for potential over a proven track record. Their life before Jesus was relatively simple. The disciples had experienced nothing of what Jesus would teach them about the kingdom of God. They knew a relatively one-dimensional life and were now introduced to the supernatural realm. Their thinking was challenged, priorities changed, and in time their purpose became clear.

2. He Made the Mission Clear.

The vision was inspiring, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few” (Luke 10:2), and the mission was clear:

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’”

—Mark 16:15–16

Leaders need a purpose; no one can lead in a vacuum. Set the direction for your church, ministry, or small group, etc., and inspire the people to a better future.

Have you made the direction clear to your leaders? Do they know what it looks like to accomplish the mission?

3. He Invested the Necessary Time.

When Jesus appointed the 12, the Scripture says, “that they might be with him” (Mark 3:14).

Leadership development was never designed to be an online experience only, just reading books, or learning that lacks practical experience. All these things are good and helpful, but at some point in the process, the person who’s developing the leaders needs to be with them modeling and showing the way.

This time can be one-to-one, small group and some virtual connections to help with quick communication. Because they were with him, they saw Jesus serve, submit (to the Father), obey, suffer and love. That first-hand look changed them from the inside out.

4. He Loved Unconditionally.

Jesus loved the 12 to the point of sacrificing his life on a cross.

Even when they ran, hid or even denied him, he remained with them and for them. Jesus didn’t love in word only; he redeemed and restored. Jesus said to Peter who denied him, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” (Matt. 16:18).

5. He Taught Practically.

From casting out demons to healing the sick, Jesus taught them, showed them and expected results.

The disciples were hungry to learn because they practiced leadership in real life and saw what worked and what didn’t. For example, they asked Jesus to teach them to pray (Luke 11), and he did. Jesus also gave them more in-depth teaching on how to pray and fast (Matt. 6:5–18). And a front row seat to Jesus’ style of preaching must have been amazing!

Teaching with an academic level of research is good for the integrity of your content, but it also needs a level of practicality that works in everyday ministry. Give your leaders an opportunity to lead.

6. He Corrected as Needed.

Jesus was not afraid to confront what needed correction. For example, when Jesus discerned that the level of faith was too small among his band of leaders, that frustrated him, and he corrected them. From fear in a storm (Matt. 8:23–27) to forgetting about the five loaves for the 5,000 and the seven loaves for the 4,000 (Matt. 16:5–11), Jesus called them out. “You of little faith!”

When Jesus predicted his death, Peter objected. “Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’” (Matt. 16:21–23)

Speaking the truth in love is an essential part of developing leaders. Candor is required. The leaders you develop are counting on you to call out where they need to improve and help them get better.

7. He Empowered Freely.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

—Matthew 28:18–20

Jesus received his authority from the Father and then transferred that authority to the disciples. He wasn’t afraid to trust his disciples with responsibility, give them authority and let them lead in a fully empowered way. That’s the example set for us.

8. He Sent Them Boldly.

“When Jesus had called the 12 together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”

—Luke 9:1–2

The result was great kingdom return.

At some point, ministry must move outside the church building and into the community. It’s there that we connect with those who don’t follow Christ. And kingdom return is best measured in changed lives.
