How long will my scuba tank last?
A question we often get asked is how long will my scuba tank last? Unfortunately there is no simple answer to that question as there are a few variables. Hopefully in this blog we can help answer that question.
Understanding Air Consumption Needs
Your breathing rate depends on your level of exercise (energy output) and the depth that you dive.
The higher your level of exercise, the harder you work, the more oxygen you need and the more Carbon Dioxide (CO2) you will produce. In order to remove the CO2 from your lungs while scuba diving, you must inhale air. So, the more exercise you do under the water the more you will breathe, and the quicker you will use your air.
The chart below shows the relationship between depth, pressure, exercise and air requirements. The deeper the depth and the higher the level of exercise, the greater the demand for breathing gas.

How do Divers Know How Much Air They Use?
Divers predict how much air the use using what they call “SAC Rate” or “Surface Air Consumption Rate”. There are a number of ways a diver can work out their SAC rate.
The easiest way is underwater on a normal dive. It requires the diver to accurately measure the air they use, the time they dive and their average depth. Divide the total air consumed by the total time in minutes of the dive. This gives you the consumption per minute. Take the consumption per minute and multiply that by the total pressure of the average depth of your dive.
Another way is on the surface. You can kit up and perform light exercise at about the same as you would underwater. Divide the total air consumed by the total time in minutes of exercise.
How Much Air is in a Scuba Tank?
The Aluminum 80 is the most commonly used tank and internal tank volume: 11.1 liters. The Maximum pressure allowed in the tank is 207 bar.
The formula for finding the amount of compressed air in the cylinder is quite easy. It is the pressure multiplied by the volume or 207 bar x 11.1 litres = 2,297.7 litres.

Stress has a major influence on how much air you use. We have all seen new divers who are nervous breath a lot of air. It is why instructors should check air more frequently with new and nervous divers. Relaxing is the best way to reduce air consumption but is often easier said than done.
Battling against a strong current will most definitely increase air consumption. However, unnecessary body movements also add to air consumption. Often new divers use hands as well as fins or excited divers quickly from one place to another, both add to increased air consumption. Slow and steady is the best way to keep your air consumption to a minimum.
Poor buoyancy and over or underweighting will cause increase usage of air. The constant moving and correction of buoyancy and regular inflating and deflating the BCD wastes air. Overweighting is a hidden killer of good air control. Proper weighting will save air.
The colder you are, the more air you will breathe as your body warms your core. Make sure that you have ample thermal protection during a dive.
Good equipment, especially a quality pair of fins will save energy and air. Further, equipment in poor condition and leaking will increase air loss and your overall all consumption. Make sure you equipment is in good working order and appropriate for the dive that you are undertaking.

What Factors Determine How Long the Air in a Scuba Tank Will Last?
Tank Volume
One of the most common tanks in recreational diving is the aluminum 80-cubic-foot tank, which holds 80 cubic feet of air compressed to 3000 pounds per a square inch. However, scuba tanks are available in different sizes and materials for a variety of applications (learn more about the difference between steel and aluminum tanks). Divers who engage in very deep or long dives may prefer tanks with a greater internal volume. Petite divers who use very little air may choose to use smaller tanks for comfort. All other factors being equal, a tank that holds a higher volume of air will last longer underwater.
Depth
As a scuba diver descends, the pressure around him increases (learn how depth effects pressure in scuba diving). This increase in pressure does not effect the air inside the diver’s scuba tank because it is already compressed to a very high pressure and he scuba tank is a rigid container. However, the water pressure does compress air that exits the tank and flows through the scuba diver’s regulator hoses and second stages. The quantity of air that fills 1 cubic foot of space at the surface will only fill ½ a cubic foot of space at a depth of 33 due to the compression of water. Therefore, the quantity of air that fills a diver’s lungs at the surface will only half fill his lungs at 33 feet. The deeper a diver goes, the greater the quantity of air required to fill his lungs with each breath, and the more quickly he will use up the air in his tank.
Air Consumption Rate All other factors being equal, a diver’s air consumption rate, also called his Surface Air Consumption Rate (SAC rate) or Respiratory Minute Volume (RMV), will determine how long the air in his tank will last compared to the average diver. A diver with large lung volume (tall or large people) will require more air than a petite or short person with a smaller lung volume and will usually have a higher air consumption rate. A variety of factors effect an individual’s air consumption rate, including stress, experience level, buoyancy control, and the amount of exercise the diver does on a dive. Relaxed, slow, and deep breathing is usually the best way for a diver to reduce his air consumption rate.
Air Supply Is Not Always the Limiting Factor: In many cases, a diver must end his dive before reaching the limit of his air supply. Examples include reaching the no-decompression limit for a dive (in which case divers may consider using enriched air nitrox) or ascending with a buddy who has reached the limits of his air supply. Dive plans and dive sites vary. Just because a diver has air left in his tank doesn’t mean he should (or will even want to) stay underwater until it runs low. In the end, several factors determine how long the air in a tank will last a for particular individual and dive. This is the reason that the question is so difficult to answer. Predicting how long a tank will last underwater requires an understanding of the physics of water pressure, tank volumes, and air consumption rates. However, I have one answer that applies to every diver who asks how long his tank will last underwater: Never long enough!

1. Inexperienced divers going to significantly deeper depths than those for which they are trained can be a recipe for disaster even without a shark in the mix. Due to the effects of pressure, the volume of air a diver consumes in a given time typically increases with their depth—go deeper breath more. Other factors can also cause a diver’s air consumption rate to increase including exertion while swimming, speaking and cold water, just to name a few. Stress is also a major contributor to air consumption so two inexperienced divers being harassed by sharks like those portrayed in the film would result in a drastic increase in air consumption. At 47 meters even an experienced diver with a fantastic air consumption rate would quickly drain their scuba cylinder, probably in less than 20 minutes. An inexperienced diver swimming, talking and being harassed by sharks MIGHT make it five minutes at that depth.
2. The full face mask system used in the movie would be extremely dangerous for these inexperienced divers. Humans convert 5% of the oxygen we breathe into carbon dioxide which is then exhaled. The masks in the film do not have separate chambers for new and exhaled gas which would result in the diver breathing in carbon dioxide. The effects of breathing carbon dioxide on the surface are rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, fatigue, nausea and headache. Other, more severe effects can develop if the carbon dioxide exposure is not reversed. Underwater all of these effects would be more even sudden and life threatening.
3. According to the US Navy dive decompression tables a diver may spend up to five minutes at 160’ (47 meters) without needing to decompress during their ascent. The longer a diver stays underwater the greater their exposure to “the bends” becomes. The bends is a layman’s term for decompression sickness, which is caused by the accumulation of nitrogen breathed under pressure. This does not pose a problem until a diver begins to surface and nitrogen bubbles form in the bloodstream. The bubbles can cause the bends. The amount of time it would take a diver to safely surface increases as the amount of time s/he spends at that depth increases. It would actually take more than four hours to safely surface from a 60-minute dive at a depth of 160 feet.
4. Another risk often faced by divers at depths exceeding 80 feet is nitrogen narcosis. Commonly referred to as “rapture of the deep,” nitrogen narcosis makes a diver feel and act like they are inebriated, lacking inhibitions and generally numb to any concerns. Luckily nitrogen narcosis has not been known to leave any lasting effect so long as divers recognize it and ascend enough to limit its effects. It is easy to imagine the havoc nitrogen narcosis could play on a diver who needs to be very mindful of their surroundings and sharks!
5. Even in warm water hypothermia is a risk. Not wearing a proper fitting full coverage wetsuit can set up a diver for problems. Water can pull heat away from a diver’s body 25 times faster than air. Hypothermia’s effects on the body start with shivering which can become violent and lead to loss of coordination and function. In bikini-style suits the likelihood divers at 47 meters down would experience more than just a mild hypothermia is high.
Given the depth, equipment, clothing and stress factors, it would be a challenge for the most experienced divers to survive under these circumstances.
