How This Works
A DVD consists of a series of VOBs. VOB is the standard video \”format\” (container) used in all DVDs. The VOBs alongside other files (ifo, bup) contain the main video (e.g movie, tv series), menus, extras, subtitles (if available) and the information required to play the DVD as expected.
The main video is split across a series of VOBs which are the largest and contain significant video length depending on the video material (movie, tv episodes etc).
To join these series of VOBs doesn’t require \”converting\” (transcoding) unless you want to reduce the video’s size, change resolution, video and audio codecs and/or video container (like to MP4).
Since the VOBs are from the same source and have the same video and audio codecs ((MPEG2, AC3/MP3 etc), you can \”stitch\” together the VOBs without \”converting\” and even put them in a different video container as long as it supports the video and audio codecs it has. Doing this will retain the original video and audio quality as well as the resolution.
Some popular video codecs include MKV, MP4, AVI, FLV, WebM etc. MKV, MP4 and AVI support the codecs used in VOB and can be used for this joining task. Your safe bet however is MKV since it has the widest codec support and is free of patents/proprietary limitations.
It’s also the most customizable as far as I can tell thanks to free tools like MKVToolNix. It’s this tool that I’ve used for this joining task, though it can only output to MKV.
