Finding in the Temple

Event from the life of Jesus

The Finding in the Temple, also called Christ among the Doctors or the Disputation (the usual names in art), was an episode in the early life of Jesus depicted in chapter 2 of the Gospel of Luke. It is the only event of the later childhood of Jesus mentioned in a gospel.[1]

The episode is described in Luke 2:41–52. Jesus at the age of twelve accompanies Mary and Joseph, and a large group of their relatives and friends to Jerusalem on pilgrimage, “according to the custom” – that is, Passover. On the day of their return, Jesus “lingered”, staying in the Temple, but Mary and Joseph thought that he was among their group when he wasn’t. Mary and Joseph headed back home and after a day of travel realised Jesus was missing, so they returned to Jerusalem, finding Jesus three days later.[2] He was found in The Temple in discussion with the elders. They were amazed at his learning, especially given his young age. When admonished by Mary, Jesus replied: “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[3]

This event is frequently shown in art, and was a common component in cycles of the Life of the Virgin as well as the Life of Christ. In early Christian depictions, Jesus is usually shown in the center, seated on a raised dais surrounded by the elders, who are often on stepped benches. The gesture usually made by Jesus, pointing to his upraised thumb (illustration), may be a conventional rhetorical gesture expressing the act of expounding text. These depictions derive from classical compositions of professors of philosophy or rhetoric with their students, and are similar to medieval depictions of contemporary university lectures.

This composition can appear until as late as Ingres (Montauban, Musée Ingres [1]) and beyond. From the Early Medieval period the moment shown is usually assimilated to the finding itself, by the inclusion of, initially, Mary, and later Joseph as well, usually at the left of the scene. Typically, Jesus and the doctors, intent on their discussions, have not noticed them yet. From the 12th century Jesus is often seated in a large throne-like chair, sometimes holding a book or scroll.

In late medieval depictions, the Doctors, often now carrying or consulting large volumes, may be given specifically Jewish features or dress, and are sometimes overtly anti-Semitic caricatures, like some of the figures in Albrecht Dürer’s version in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. From the High Renaissance onward, many painters showed a “close-up” of the scene, with Jesus closely surrounded by gesticulating scholars, as in Dürer’s version of the subject.

Rembrandt, who enjoyed depicting Jewish elders in the Temple in various subjects, made three etchings of the subject (Bartsch 64–66) as well as one of the much more unusual scene of “Jesus returning from the Temple with his parents” (B 60). The Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt painted a version called The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple, now at Birmingham, as one of a number of subjects from Jesus’s life, for which he travelled to the Holy Land to study local details.

The subject has attracted few artists since the 19th century, and one of the last notable depictions may be the one painted, as a forgery of a Vermeer, by Han van Meegeren in front of the Dutch police, in order to demonstrate that the paintings he had sold to Hermann Göring were also fake.

That’s probably not saying it strong enough. God cannot be found at all.

If, however, you think of God as “up there, somewhere,” and you as “down here on earth,” that is to say, if you see God as separate from you — then that is precisely why God cannot be found.

“Separation” is a fabrication of a worn out theology made popular in the twentieth century by the likes of such programs as Evangelism Explosion, the Four Spiritual Laws, etc. In this theological construct, God and you are separate. God is holy and just. You’re a sinner, rotten to the core. And, unless you repent of sin, accept Jesus as your sinless substitute — since he was not a sinner — you, my friend, are doomed to spend eternity in hell.

Period. It is this belief that encourages Christian preachers to proclaim a theology that excludes virtually all of humanity from God and consigns them to hell (see the recent tweet by the Mars Hill pastor Mark Driscoll).

This theological misunderstanding of Jesus’ life and death — known as “the substitutionary theory of atonement” — has been, for decades, the exclusive way of explaining Jesus’ life and death. To question it, sends many Christians into a doctrinal cardiac arrest.

But questioning it is what many have been doing quietly for just about as many decades and, now, with the help of the internet, Christians and theologians and churchgoers and “Nones,” and scores of people world wide, have discovered they’re not alone in questioning this and other outworn theologies and doctrines.

I grew up being taught this doctrine of atonement and no alternative was ever given. We we expected to swallow it like the Jonestown folks were expected to drink the fatally-laced Kool Aid. What many now realize is that this theology has had a similar effect on the spiritual lives of people for centuries.

It’s time to let it go.

There is another way of understanding the Christian story, and it is not only more consistent with what Jesus actually taught, but it shares a common understanding with many other faith traditions.

That way is simply to read the story of Jesus not from the place of “a sinner separated from God.” Start, instead, from the perspective that you are “a spiritual person in union with God already.”

Why? Because you are.

For some of you, this won’t be easy. Raised, as I was, on a theological diet high in a caloric content of “separation,” it will likely feel frightening to you to let go of this one-sided way of thinking, even though it has not felt right to you for a long time.

When you do begin to let it go, however, you discover how beautiful life is lived in union with God. Questions like: “How do I find God?” will start to feel foreign to you. Instead of always looking for God, you will feel God and enjoy walking in the joy of this ineffable Presence. This produces real transformation in how you think, live, treat others and the world.

Here are the five ways to help along this spiritual transformation inside yourself:

1. Change your thinking about yourself and about God.

You are not separate from God. You did not inherit some faulty gene that, while dormant in your infancy years, has come to life at some mythical “age of accountability.” Which, by the way, my friend, is nowhere in scripture. This notion of “inherited” sin or “original sin,” or “age of accountability,” — these are all just theological constructs created by religious thinkers down through the centuries and, for all the good you may wish to believe they have done, the damage is manifestly worse, and will likely take centuries to heal. They have no basis whatsoever in any of Jesus’ teachings. I challenge anyone to prove differently.

Will you let go of your old ways of thinking? Can you? Would you change the way you think about yourself, about God? Will you start with the assumption that God is in you already?

Just as you cannot find God in a book of religion, you cannot find God in church, either. Both of these venues may be portals into God’s presence. But that’s all they are and, don’t ever forget, God needs neither, for God has many portals. If what you want is an inner sense of God’s nearness — and, what spiritual person does not? — why would you look outside yourself for who is in you — who IS you already?

2. Regard every thought of God as God.

Some of you are reading this only to find something with which to disagree. You have found it, too. Yet, you’re still reading.

Why? Are you looking for more with which to disagree? You’ll find that, too. So, what is it with you? Do you need just a little more fire power for your eventual response? Or, do you just enjoy feeling miserable toward Christians like me that you readily dismiss as “reprobates,” “apostates,” or severely misguided nitwits who are “proof” the “end is near?”

You’re still reading. Still.

Is it possible that somewhere deep within you, my words strike a chord of authenticity? Might it be that you keep coming back because that something in you is quietly calling out to you and it feels right?

Do not run from this, my friend. Do not let your fear, your ego, your position or your anxiety over what others might think of you if you finally admit that you, too, have had questions and doubts about all this theological nonsense you’ve been told you must believe, or you will go to hell.

If it rings true, my friend, in the deepest part of your soul, that’s because it is true.

Others of you are reading this, but you’re at a different place. Your openness, your willingness to change your way of thinking is like fertile soil, rich and ready for new seeds to take root, spout and grow. It is for you, I write these words, and offer them as portals into Presence within you now.

Could it be that you are reading this article because it is God who is knocking on the door of your consciousness?

I love the way Rumi, the Sufi poet put it: “I have lived on the lip of insanity…wanting to know reasons, knocking on doors. The door opens! I’ve been knocking from the inside.”

You will decide how to regard any of this. You will also decide whether to regard your next thought of God, whether is is God or just some genetic impulse that science has not thoroughly explained.

I would kindly suggest, however, remain open to the possibility that the fact you’re reading this, as well as every thought of God you have that follows, might just be God awakening in you.

Ralph W. Emerson said, “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, know that we carry it within us or we find it not.”

3. Practice believing that God dwells in you already.

If you make it your practice to give a little attention to every thought of God you have, you will soon start believing each thought of God is God. This is how believing works.

Believing, at least in the way Jesus expressed it, has little to do with content and everything to do with conduct. So make these suggestions your spiritual practice. This is how faith grows and believing, or trusting works. “To trust” is actually a better translation of the Biblical meaning of the word “believe. “Believe” is too easily confused with beliefs.

So, as you make your new way of thinking — ie., “God cannot be found because God is in me already,” — as you make this your daily practice, soon it will become you way of daily living.

4. Remember that God dwells in all others, too.

Even all things. If you make this your new way of thinking, you will begin believing, and so behaving, that the God who is in you is the same God in others as well.

Let go of labels, my friend. Mystery is inexplicable.

Can you imagine the difference it would make in your life, in your relationships, in this world, if you could see God, not just in yourself, but in everyone and everything else?

Rather than labeling me some “liberal Christian,” or “progressive Christian,” and then dismissing, or worse, despising me…

Rather than me labeling you some “narrow-minded fundamentalist,” or “dispensational, pre-millienial Christian,” who is only interested in escaping the world with the Rapture, can you wonder with me what difference it would most certainly make if people made it their spiritual practice to see God in each other…in all things?

5. Be still and know that I am God.

Some of you will recognize these words are from Psalm 42:10, one of my favorite psalms. Maybe one of yours, too.

Why? The one word in Hebrew is translated with the two words in English: “Be still.” Which really means, “Let go,” “Relax,” “Release control.”

In other words, stop trying to find God.

Why? It isn’t necessary. Besides, you cannot find what is not lost. Knowing God takes nothing more than real repentance — which, Biblically means “to change how you think.” Repentance is not the phony, emotional stuff perpetrated in the “revivalist” traditions of my youth, and much of Christian history since the eighteenth century. This kind of “repentance” is needed at every revival meeting. And, it’s long-term spiritual effects never lasted long enough before another revival was needed to reconnect those who never seemed capable of living with a continual sense of the Presence of God.

In the end, my friend, the question, “How do I find God?” is the wrong question and actually born of an inadequate theology.

God is in you already. If Jesus’ life and death and teachings make anything clear it is this: The veil is torn (Matt. 27:51) the wall of separation is all an illusion, has been an illusion and will always be an illusion.

Practice this truth and, in time, you will discover that your old ways of thinking will undergo a miraculous metamorphosis — it’s called “salvation” in the Bible — you will make the inexplicable discovery that the Presence you seek is the person you are.

Think about this for a while. You might just decide this is a “salvation” you can believe in.

It’s funny I should choose the word “suddenly” to begin my story because it feels like the journey has been anything but sudden. I guess I would say that I never choose the easy road. Throughout my entire life I’ve always preferred the uncertainty of adventure over the security of an easier path. While my sister chose marriage at age 25, I chose to accept my first teaching job in Morocco. But this story is not about my entire life story. I only find myself reflecting on some of the revelations that now make sense to me.

My Spiritual Journey Toward Jesus

Why would my spiritual journey to find Jesus be a straightforward and easy path when the rest of my life has been anything but that?

In 2008 my husband lost his job. We had just moved to a new area and our children were one and three years old. We had bought a beautiful new home. Little did we know that everything was about to change.

It took three years for my husband to decide what he wanted to do. It took another four years before his new business allowed us to pay ourselves. Things were incredibly stressful. My naturally introverted husband became extremely withdrawn, and I found myself relatively alone with my own struggles.

Growth Comes through Struggle

My life had changed drastically between 2008 and 2015. Where I used to find happiness in shopping, working out and socializing I was now working part-time for my husband’s business and doing everything I could to avoid spending money. It seemed every aspect of my “old life” involved spending money. I started saying no to lunch dates, dates to meet for manicures or go shopping, even coffee. I was ashamed of my new “status” and began to sink deeper into a state of self-pity and depression. We canceled our gym memberships and basically stayed at home, which, for this extrovert meant isolation and sadness. 2015 was a really low time for me.

At this same time my twin sister Julie had just moved to Seattle. She had her own struggles, the challenges of a new place, without friends or family nearby. Planting Seeds

The next summer Julie was excited to take me to their church. I remember going every Sunday for three weeks and crying my way through each service, wanting what she had but not sure what it was or how to get there. I was searching for something. Undoubtedly, Jesus was tugging at my heart. He was planting seeds of desire that would take years still to bloom.

This was about the same time we both started our Instagram accounts. The spring and summer of 2015 opened up the world of IG to me and provided me a welcome purpose and distraction from my worries and the pity-party I had come to embrace.

Meanwhile my husband’s and my business eventually started to show some promise and we dared to believe that things would start to improve. I saw the happiness that my sister’s faith was bringing her and I wanted that but somehow it continued to stay just out of reach.

So Many Excuses

I made excuses for myself, blaming it on not finding the right church. I had attended a few local churches and none of them had felt right, blaming it on my family. Neither my husband nor my boys showed the least bit of interest in finding a church. In reality, they pushed back on the idea until I felt like I was fighting a losing battle. I told myself, I don’t have time to even go to the gym anymore. Where am I going to find time to go to church?

Looking back, I know that these were just excuses. Excuses because I wasn’t ready to devote my life to God. I feared what that might look like. I was afraid that I didn’t know HOW to let go and let my faith lead me.

Jesus Brought Me to My Knees

In 2017-18 I started getting severe migraines. I had had migraines all my life but these were different. I was waking up in the middle of the night several times a week and no medication could take away the pain. Out of utter desperation I reached for a book that my niece had given me called “Jesus Calling” and through tears of pain started reading and praying to Jesus. These prayers were my last resort. And Jesus was there for me to take away my pain.

I had reached my breaking point. The stress. The anxiety. The solitude. The feeling of complete isolation from friends, family, even from my sister and my husband. It had been nearly 10 years of financial stress. Worrying how we were going to pull ourselves out without an answer or solution.

All of this finally triggered a physical reaction and I was brought to my knees. At three a.m. through the pain and tears, as my migraine started to lift, I saw my migraine as God’s gift to me. It was his way of calling to me. And telling me when all else fails that He would be there for me. I started to feel relief in those moments. And I felt grateful for Jesus who I knew was there for me.

I continued to visit my sister’s church when I visited Seattle. I wanted so badly to have what she had. But I still felt lost. My Husband was reluctant. My children were reluctant. And all my attempts to find a local church had left me disappointed.

Jesus Begins Delivering Miracles

Then this past year placed another big hurdle in our path. My oldest son would be graduating from the private school he had attended since 2nd grade and would be entering high school. We knew that our local public school was not an option that we would be satisfied with, but we couldn’t afford any of the private schools. We were at a loss. It seemed like the only option was to sell our home to try to move into another town where the school districts were better. Unfortunately, this would mean putting additional financial stresses on our family. It would mean downsizing and giving up the one positive thing that we were still clinging to, our beautiful home.

I looked hard at my priorities and realized that I was willing to sacrifice my home for the sake of my son’s education. But at that moment one of my good friends told me about a local Christian school her daughter was attending. Not only did she speak very highly of the school, but it was an affordable option. However, I was very skeptical because I didn’t think any of my family members would even be willing to consider it. But Jesus had a plan.

Jesus Visibly Shows Up in Our Lives

It was January and acceptance letters were already being sent out. We needed to have a local church and the boys needed to show regular attendance at a youth group. We started going to a church with my friend the very first Sunday in January and committed as a family. Together we didn’t miss a Sunday and the boys didn’t miss a Youth group meeting. They even attended a three-day winter retreat. By mid-February we were able to ask the pastor for a letter of recommendation and applied to the Christian school. It was by the grace of Jesus that he was accepted and an answer to our prayers that he would be able to attend such a wonderful high school.

A Hard-Won Spiritual Harvest

Little did we know this was just part of the miracle that Jesus had planned. There I was, I had my family surrounding me, my husband holding my hand. And God’s love promised to me. I had finally found a church, New Life Church in Alamo, CA where I felt at home. My husband was willingly attending by my side. My children agreed to go and everyone committed to our shared purpose. This was my moment to let go. I started saying yes to every opportunity to worship and connect and even went alone a couple Sundays when my husband and boys were out of town. Sundays became my favorite day of the week and began looking for every opportunity to reach out, and even offered my services to help with the church’s Instagram account.

I Am in Jesus’ Hands

Most recently I attended an all-female two-day conference called She Conference led by New Life Church and felt the power and courage that comes with opening oneself up to Jesus. Letting go and finally not being afraid. Suddenly I found myself raising my hand and committing openly, publicly to Jesus. What I had always longed for but been too afraid to commit to. It suddenly was mine. As I raised my hand, I felt the warmth and reassurance of other hands on my shoulders. Other women were gathering around me and praying with me, over me. What had been a private longing of mine was suddenly thrust out in the open.

All at once my insecurities were thrust out into the open for all to see, acknowledge and dissolved all in the same instance.

In the obscured darkness women all around me sent their prayers up to Jesus. There were tears. I shed tears for the fears that I was releasing. I swapped fear for joy and embraced a new-found courage that I was claiming. This was my new path, the journey I had longed for so long. In that moment I recognized the joy and hope that was promised by God all along.

A lump wells up in my throat as I write this. I know that I am still learning what it means to accept Jesus in my life to His full power and glory. It is the biggest adventure I have ever embarked on. Accepting His will. Surrendering to Him. It feels scary and reassuring all at once. But every time I fixate on His will, good things happen. So, I accept the challenge laid in front of me.

It is All for His Greater Purpose

And suddenly, I am back to where this story began. Now, “suddenly” everything makes sense. All the hardships I faced were worth it so that I could know the face of God. I hate to think of my life any other way. What if? What if I hadn’t experienced those financial hardships and had to experience the stress and the depression and the feeling of being lost and the migraines? I may have remained trapped in the superficial focus on “things” and “experiences” and never would have found a relationship Jesus.

What I know now is this: I haven’t arrived but am simply on God’s path. I have so much more to learn and so far to grow but it’s ok. What is important is that I have surrendered to the love of Jesus, and I acknowledge my ignorance in His ways.

Jesus Was Always with Me

I know that the deeper I grow in my faith the stronger I will become. I know that this is where I need to be and that Jesus is by my side. All I need to do is remember that.

My Life in the Hands of Jesus

Now I understand. He has shown me the light. My life and all the suffering finally makes sense. I am at peace. And I am ready and excited to move forward with renewed hope and confidence that everything will be alright. Everything will be just as it should be. I am truly on the path of becoming the person God created me to be.

Know that Jesus is Good, Always

Jesus works all things for our good. Even and perhaps especially during our struggles. This is incredibly encouraging to know as we face the toughest times in our lives. Know they are for purpose. Know that Jesus is at work. He has not forgotten you. On the contrary, He is calling you, growing you, and has designed your challenges for His purpose and your greater good.
