What do I need to do before storing my electric golf cart for the winter?

The first thing you will want to check is your electrolyte levels in the batteries.

Make sure you have 1/2” of distilled water above the lead plates in your battery cells.

Charge your batteries fully.

Need service? Contact us by phone at our shop, 410-838-2505 and let us professionally get your golf cart ready for the winter!

—————-

What is the proper procedure for charging my golf cart batteries?

Charging your batteries is one of the most important parts of golf cart maintenance. All batteries must be fully charged to maximize capacity and life. Without properly charging, your batteries will not provide the performance or reliability to meet your needs.

Start by checking the water levels to ensure that they are adequate and are not below the tops of the lead plates. If the levels are low, you need to add enough distilled water so it is just above the surface of the plates, no more. Usually, there is a plastic sleeve in each of the battery filler holes with a vertical slit about 1/8” in wide. Fill the distilled water level to the bottom of the plastic sleeve. This allows for expansion when charging the battery.

Next, you want to confirm your battery connections are tight to avoid poor connections, which can affect charging. Also ensure the vents are completely installed in the battery to avoid excess water loss. Batteries will give off a “gas” while charging so always assure there is adequate ventilation at the location where you’ll be charging your batteries to avoid gas buildup. Never charge a frozen battery and avoid charging in temperatures over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Batteries have no memory so it’s important to charge them frequently.

Why doesn’t my charger work after storing my cart after an extended time or over the winter?

One of the most Frequently Asked Questions in the early spring phone calls we receive is usually one pertaining to an electric golf cart and the suspected problem of a faulty charger. The calls are very common and are usually something along the lines of not having used the golf cart for some lengthy period of time. The frantic customer states that they came back to dead golf cart and that their battery charger will not work, although it worked perfectly before they put the golf cart away. Now this may come as a surprise but believe it or not the charger is usually not to blame and the overwhelming majority of the time it’s the batteries.

Here is the explanation, in order for the charging process to begin, most automatic golf cart battery chargers have to detect nominal charge. This is a minimal level of charge within the battery pack. In other words, if your batteries have sat unused for a while and are completely discharged the charger can’t detect them and is consequently unable to do its job This is a safety feature that is designed to prevent the risk of an electrical fire, as well as, to prevent a total destruction of your batteries if they fail to take a charge. This can be simply solved with the use of a basic volt-meter or a multi-meter. Here is a simple check you can do confirming a nominal voltage problem. If you are using an 8 volt battery and getting only 4 volts or lower or a 6 volt battery and getting only 3 volts or lower, then you likely have a nominal voltage issue and the charger is not to blame. However, if your meter reading is above that listed above when you test your batteries or they are at their proper levels, then you the problem may very well be a charger problem.

Here are a couple of ways that you can go about addressing the problem.

Assuming your charger is the typical 12-volt automotive type you purchased from a local retail store and you have a 48-volt system that utilizes four 12-volt batteries all you need to do is simply disconnect the batteries from each other and charge each one individually for about 20-30 minutes or so. From there, your golf cart charger should be able to take over and this is where your multi-meter comes in very handy throughout this process.

If your golf cart uses 6-volt batteries (in either a 36 or 48-volt system) the process is almost as easy, you would just charge two batteries at a time rather than individually for the 20-30 minutes.

The problem begins when you are trying to revive a 8-volt battery. This is when things get a bit hairy because you are pumping 12-volts into an 8-volt container which is something that should never be done for more than 15-20 minutes max. If this is something that YOU choose to do, be sure to keep a close eye on the batteries and never leave them unattended. Again, be sure to take all the precautions and contact a professional if you are at all uncomfortable with this process.

choose to do, Once your batteries have absorbed a small charge your automatic charger should be able to take over, which is ideal. Today’s chargers use a multi-stage algorithm to efficiently charge your batteries which prolongs their lifespan. Once the charging cycle has finished unplug the cord, let it sit for about 15-20 minutes or so, and then plug it back in again. This is called an ‘equalization charge’ and helps to maintain equal charge levels across all of the batteries.

and helps to maintain equal charge levels across all of the batteries. Additional information can be found at http://www.trojanbattery.com/tech-support/faq/ or http://www.trojanbattery.com/tech-support/battery-maintenance/

Gas or Electric?

One of the most important decisions you may make when it comes to buying your golf cart is: Should I buy gas or electric?

We like to do some fact finding to help you decide.

Common questions we will ask you:

Where do you live?

Who will be using it?

Do you have power access (a standard wall outlet)?

Do you have gas access?

What are you using it for?

Will you be using a street legal golf cart?

How capable of at home maintenance are you?

The primary deal breaker we are told: range.

How far will I be able to travel? Depending on the manufacturer, most gas golf carts have between a 5 and 6 gallon gas tank and get about 40 miles to the gallon. Electric g olf carts with fully charged batteries in perfect condition get about 35 miles to the full charge.

Here in New Smyrna, on beach side, where carts are used as street legal vehicles and much of a car replacement, we pulled our numbers: Our beach side customers are 90% gas. Street legal golf carts run 20-25 miles per hour. If your electric cart is running 25 mph, with a 35 mile range, and you put your foot on the pedal and drive non stop around town, the simple math shows you will get 80 to 90 minutes of run time. This isn’t exactly practical for a person using a golf cart as their primary form of transportation. However, if you plan to only drive your cart, say, from your home to the grocery store or dinner and back, it will work for you. (But we so often hear that a customer doesn’t plan to use their cart for more than a small trip here and there, then they love it so much they use it every day! Don’t say we didn’t tell you so ) Additionally, many of our customers park in parking garages for condominiums that don’t have access to a plug to recharge their batteries, or they don’t have a garage at their home to plug in their golf cart overnight.

For our customers in golf communities, gated communities, or small neighborhoods, electric is perfect! They are driving their cart short distances, with stop and go driving. They typically have easy access to power in their garage. They don’t have to worry about getting a gas can to a gas station and then transport the can home to fill their golf cart.

The next most common complaint we hear: electric is much quieter than gas.

For the most part: yes.

But there is one exception: Yamaha Quietech EFI.

Yamaha has a patented technology on their gas golf carts from 2017 and newer — a gas golf cart that is 1/2 decibel louder than an electric golf cart.

Here are some of the basic details of Yamaha Quietech EFI

Let’s compare QuieTech EFI to everything else!

How Long Do Golf Cart Batteries Last On One Charge? (Complete Guide)

When you buy a golf cart battery, you typically want it to last as long as possible without needing a recharge.

However, there are many different elements that can affect how long your golf cart battery will last on one charge.

Understanding these factors is critical for ensuring that you get the most out of your battery and that you don’t make a mistake that could shorten its one-charge lifespan quite significantly.

The Average One-Charge Lifespan Varies

One of the more frustrating things about shopping for golf cart batteries is figuring out how long they are likely to last you.

This situation is one that can take many cart owners for a bit of a ride.

For example, some may find that their battery lasts at least 12-24 hours – of riding time, not real-time – before it needs to recharge.

These batteries are very rare, though, and most get 8-10 hours out of their battery before it runs out of juice.

Why does such a broad range of possibilities exist?

First of all, the manufacturer of the battery and the battery type matters a lot.

For example, a battery with 36 volts is going to last twice as long as one with 24 volts because it holds more juice in general.

And a battery that is 12 volt will last half as long as one with 24 volts – this simple mathematical formula isn’t 100 percent precise but is accurate enough as a general guide.

The golf cart model is also very important to consider in this scenario.

For example, a more powerful EZGO cart is going to naturally use more battery power than one that has less power – the draw on the battery is going to be much higher.

Check the amperage output and the overall voltage of your battery in this situation and try to make sure that it matches the needs of your cart to ensure it lasts longer.

Weather conditions may also play a part in the health and general capability of your golf cart battery.

In the summer, your battery may drain more quickly because the heat could cause the water, electrolytes, and other fluids to either get too hot or even evaporate.

Conversely, cold weather can drain the battery very quickly because cold naturally robs the juice in the cells of some power.

Generally speaking, your battery should last a minimum of eight riding hours before you need to charge it up again.

That time, however, can become much lower depending on many different factors.

Unfortunately, cart owners may make mistakes that cause their charge time to fall quite quickly and leave them in a pretty tough state.

As a result, it is important to know how to avoid these issues.

Poor Battery Maintenance

People who don’t care for their batteries very well are going to find that they are more likely to have a poor single-charge time than other batteries.

For example, a person may have an older non-trickle charger that does not shut off when their battery is at full power.

When you have this type of charger, you may overcharge or even cook your battery and dramatically decrease its lifespan.

Other people forget or refuse to add new distilled water to their batteries on a regular basis.

You need to check your battery at least once a month when in use and refill the water when it gets too low.

A lack of water will cause the battery to run too hot and rob it of charge efficiency.

Even worse, some people use tap water on their battery instead of distilled water.

Unfortunately, the trace minerals in tap water will damage your battery and cause malfunction.

Mismatched Battery Brand

Did you know that your golf cart must use a battery that has been manufactured for it?

Too many people think that they can mix and match brands between carts without losing some battery effectiveness.

Yes, your EZGO cart will technically run with a Yamaha cart battery – but this battery has been designed for unique Yamaha models and won’t work as well for your EZGO.

As a result, you need to make sure that you pair up your brands properly to avoid any complication.

Typically, you’re going to find that your cart manual has a suggestion of batteries that you should use for your cart.

You may find that these suggestions are a little high priced, which may cause you to want to try another type.

Don’t make this mistake – you’ll pay more when you have to replace the battery sooner.

This suggestion goes for the battery charge, too – make sure the voltage and amperage match your needs to avoid complications.
