How much nicotine is in my vape juice? And how much nicotine is too much? These are some of the most commonly asked questions, as people switch from cigarettes to vaping. It is very important to take note of your nicotine consumption, especially if you are switching to vaping in order to quit smoking. This is why, we at ePuffer came up with a True Nicotine formula, which is based on Per Unit (Unit meaning per cigarette) calculation, to make it easy for you to get started.

Understanding the True Nicotine Formula

If you are an ‘old’ smoker, we are sure you remember how cigarette companies used to imprint information about TAR and Nicotine content on the side of the cigarette packs. Although not so many cigarette companies publish this information now, it is important to note, that several years ago this was the only source where smokers could get information about their nicotine intake. For instance, if you wanted a regular cigarette, you would have to look for a pack with 1.0mg nicotine imprinted. For example, a pack of Big Old Red listed 1mg nicotine per unit. By one unit, we mean one smoked cigarette. This means one cigarette, corresponds to 1mg of nicotine. So, if you smoked a pack of twenty cigarettes, then you would have consumed 20mg of nicotine. To help consumers make an informed decision, we at ePuffer decided to mark our e-cigarette nicotine level using per Unit calculation:

1.2mg- Regular | 0.6mg-Mild | 0.3mg- Light | 0mg- Zero

As you can see, nicotine per unit made it so easy for smokers to choose what works best for them, as far as the nicotine content level is concerned.

What is the Unit?

We conducted a research by interviewing more than 500 smokers across the globe. We wanted to know how many puffs approximately it takes for a consumer to finish one cigarette. Although different people will have different smoking rates, we were able to gather the following data that helped us set a unit at 15 puffs.

30 smokers reported – 9 puffs

50 smokers reported – 10 puffs

90 smokers reported – 12 puffs

120 smokers reported – 14 puffs

170 smokers reported – 15 puffs

70 smokers reported – 16 puffs

When designing our Magnum SNAPS cartomizer, we made the cartridge e-liquid capacity at 1ml for easier calculation.

Now let’s get into formulas and calculations:

As we have already mentioned, ( 1 unit = 1 cigarette ) is set at 15 puffs. One SNAPS cartomizer is equivalent to around 300 puffs. So, if we take one cartomizer (300 puffs) and divide it by one unit (15 puffs), that will give us 20 units. This means that 1 cartomizer is equivalent to one pack of 20 cigarettes.

Now, if we take a 24mg/ml nicotine e-liquid, this means that every single ml of the e-liquid contains 24mg of nicotine which can easily be expressed as 2.4% by volume. ( 24mg/ml=24g/lx100/1000=2.4% )

Here is how our True Nicotine Formula worked:

If we divide 24mg by 300 puffs, we get 0.08mg per puff. This means, if we take one cigarette, which is equivalent to 15 puffs (0.08 multiplied by 15 puffs or one cigarette) we will get 1.2mg of nicotine in every cigarette unit.

As already mentioned, people will take varying periods of time to consume one cigarette. This means, that different vapers will consume different amounts of nicotine. For better understanding, this is illustrated in the following table. Please note, that the calculations are based on 0.08mg nicotine per puff.

9 puffs = 0.72mg

10 puffs = 0.80mg

11 puffs = 0.88mg

12 puffs = 0.96mg

13 puffs = 1.04mg

14 puffs = 1.12mg

15 puffs = 1.20mg

16 puffs = 1.28mg

Why are we switching to percentage based nicotine labelling?

Although our formula works, and we have been using it since ePuffer inception, starting October 1st, 2018 we will be switching to percentage-based nicotine labeling, as opposed to per unit labeling.

Why? Because vaping industry has evolved over the years and vapers are now more experienced and informed as far as mg/ml, %, nicotine dosage / labeling is concerned. We also must comply with the FDA / EU and UK TPD regulatory requirements.

How is the nicotine content measured?

Nicotine content in an e-liquid is measured in mg/ml, which is often expressed in percentage. For instance, a 1.2% nicotine e-liquid will contain 12mg of nicotine per milliliter. Nicotine content increases with percentage and hence the lower the percentage, the lower the nicotine content and vice-versa.

In the past couple of years, vaping has become popular. Much has been said on the topic. Some say it’s entirely safe for use without any side effects. Others say that vaping is even more dangerous than smoking.

Sadly, people talking about vaping and cigarettes are usually biased and aren’t interested in the truth. They represent “one side” and simply follow their agenda. So, we’ve decided to give you a comparison between vapes and cigarettes to show you where they stand against each other.

We won’t talk about things that are still unknown and focus just on cold facts. People are tempted to switch to vaping, some don’t know if they should smoke or vape, and some are just curious about how they compare. So let’s see.

Do You Get More Nicotine From Vaping or Smoking?

It all depends. There isn’t a universal rule. First of all, you should bear in mind that cigarettes and vapes come in different strengths and flavours. Simply put, not all of them have the same amount of nicotine. How much you get is up to your preference.

With cigarettes, the nicotine amount on average goes from about 6 mg to 12 mg (Source: NCBI). Since smoking includes burning, the amount of nicotine inhaled from a single cigarette goes from 1 mg and up to 2 mg. Simply put, the differences aren’t that drastic, and there aren’t any cigarettes without nicotine.

On the other hand, vapes can have from 0 mg of nicotine and up to 36 mg. However, these values are always for 1 ml of juice. Therefore, you aren’t getting that much nicotine per hit. It can be challenging to calculate the average nicotine level from a single vape hit.

A 16 mg nicotine per millilitre vape is equivalent to an average cigarette. So, many vape options let you get less nicotine than cigarettes (Source: NCBI). At the same time, you also have options for vape juices without any nicotine.

How Many Puffs of a Vape Is Equal to a Cigarette

We know all of this sounds confusing but don’t worry; we’ll explain it so that you can understand. An average e-juice bottle is 1 millilitre. A single millilitre contains around 100 puffs. One hundred puffs are about ten cigarettes.

So, 2 millilitres of vape juice is the equivalent of a single pack of cigarettes in terms of smoking/vaping. However, bear in mind that we are talking about puffing, not the amount of nicotine or “throat hit” you will get.

For example, we mentioned earlier that vapes could have a much lower amount of nicotine or no nicotine at all. This means you would have to vape far more juice to take in as much nicotine as you would from a single pack of cigarettes.

Still, these are average projections. Some people take bigger hits when vaping, and a single bottle of e-juice might last a shorter amount of time. On the other hand, some people will find it lasting longer. These numbers are just there to give you a rough idea, but you need to try it out in practice to see how it works out for you.

How Many Puffs of a 3mg Vape Equals a Cigarette?

As we mentioned earlier, 16 mg of nicotine per millilitre juice is the equivalent of a single cigarette. This means that you will have to vape the whole bottle to take as much nicotine as you would from an average cigarette.

With that in mind, a full bottle of a 3 mg juice is about a 5th of an average cigarette. It would take many puffs of a 3 mg vape to get as much nicotine as an average cigarette. You would have to vape five vape juice bottles to get as much nicotine as you would from a cigarette.

When we transfer it into puffs on average, it means that you will have to take 500 hits of vape to smoke as much nicotine as you would with a single cigarette. This is a big difference in nicotine intake! Bear in mind that there are e-juices with even less nicotine.

So, you could further reduce the amount of nicotine intake. This lets people vape more often without having to worry about getting too much nicotine in their bodies.

How Many ml of Vape Equals a Pack of Cigarettes?

A typical vape juice bottle is 1 ml. This is one thousandth of a litre. In terms of puffing and smoking, one millilitre equals 100 hits. This is about half of a cigarette pack. Therefore, you would need two bottles of e-juice for a pack of cigarettes.

If you are considering switching to vaping from cigarettes, this is good to know. It can give you an estimate of where you should start. On the other hand, if 1 ml of 16 mg juice equals a single cigarette in terms of nicotine, you would have to vape 20 bottles to puff as much nicotine as you would from a pack of average cigarettes.

These numbers should say one thing, vaping is probably a lot safer in terms of nicotine. Even those stronger variations of juice are far less harmful than cigarettes. Even the strongest juices aren’t as strong as cigarettes in terms of nicotine.

Yes, it might seem that you are getting less for your money, but this isn’t the case. When you consider the price and how much less harmful vaping is, it becomes clear that vaping is a better option.

Is It Ok to Smoke and Vape at the Same Time?

In terms of how harmful they are, smoking comes first. Apart from the fact that it has more nicotine than vape juice, smoking also causes combustion (Source: PMI Science). This leads to the release of various chemicals and toxins that you inhale into your lungs.

Smoking and vaping simultaneously is a better option, but you still have the significant adverse effects of cigarettes. If you just add vaping on top of your smoking habit, you aren’t doing anything good. Still, introducing vaping in your routine can help you reduce smoking and quit altogether.

Your end goal should be to quit smoking and switch to vaping if you cannot stop smoking altogether. Vaping is a far less harmful alternative that you can use to keep your smoking habit without all that nicotine. As we said earlier, you can always switch to a nicotine-free juice.

Using vaping to cut down on smoking is a good thing as vapor isn’t as harmful. However, you shouldn’t just add vaping on top of smoking. Ideally, you should quit smoking and vaping altogether.

Using Vapor Equals Quitting Smoking

People who are addicted to cigarettes are usually addicted to that smoking sensation. On top of that, they often have a nicotine addiction. These two problems combined can make it difficult to quit smoking. After all, most smokers would like to quit, but they cannot do it no matter how hard they try.

Vaping is popular with younger generations as it gives a better taste, customisation options and lets you set up your taste and feel. Many people who are vaping have switched to e-cigarettes because they wanted to quit cigarettes.

First of all, vaping is good for this purpose because it lets you get the same sensation as when smoking a cigarette. By adjusting your gear, you can get the throat hit you want and the sensation. At the same time, you can start slowly reducing the amount of nicotine in your vape juice.

Over time this will make it easier to get rid of nicotine altogether in a gradual manner. Once you’ve got rid of nicotine, quitting vaping and smoking altogether will be far more manageable.
