Though countless articles extolling cities with the highest teacher pay exist, most don’t take into account how the local cost of living impacts what those earnings can buy. If things like housing, food, and transportation are costly, a high salary doesn’t necessarily mean you have a lot of disposable income.

Our ranking of teacher salaries is different: we factor in the cost of living to help you decide what city will give you the most bang for your teacher buck. If you’re flexible about where you want to teach, this article may help you find the right city for you.

#20: Reno, Nevada Average annual salary is $58,915 2.7 times the estimated cost of living for a single person Known as the Biggest Little City in the World, Reno, Nevada gives off a small-town vibe while managing to provide many of the amenities you expect to find in much larger cities. Our team used average salary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, May 2018) for teachers in various cities across the nation. We matched this data with cost of living information for available cities from the data source Numbeo.com (December 2019) using costs for a single individual renting their home.

Where city data existed in both data sets, we divided annual average salary by cost of living. Cities were ranked according to how many times the cost of living was earned in average salary for teachers in that city.

As the Sacramento City Unified District teachers’ strike continues, our KCRA 3 Investigates team has been looking into claims from the union and the district. The school district says that its teachers are the highest paid in the region when it comes to total compensation. We looked at average teacher salaries from the state Department of Education. Looking at the five largest districts in the region, Modesto tops the list with an average salary of $93,071.According to the state, teachers at SCUSD are paid an average of $83,000. That’s higher than teachers at San Juan, Stockton and Elk Grove. When it comes to all districts in KCRA’s coverage area of Northern California, SCUSD ranks 24th on the list. There are 121 districts with lower pay. But that’s just taking salary into account, not full benefits. When we factor in health benefits, SCUSD does contribute the highest amount among districts in our coverage area. According to state figures, the district contributes 100% of the Healthnet plan cost, for a maximum of $40,340. But that number is an outlier because it includes the case of an employee who lives outside the service area and a more representative number is $33,697, a SCUSD spokesperson said. In contrast, Modesto City Schools contributes $7,000 annually to an individual’s medical benefits, the district confirmed. Other districts with the top health contributions besides SCUSD are Lodi Unified, Bangor Union, San Juan Unified and Nevada County.
