Adding all these costs, starting pottery as a hobby, could cost you around $1400. It’s safe to say that if you buy a Kiln and Pottery Wheel getting started in pottery making can be an expensive hobby. Once you’ve spent money on quality products, restocking will be significantly cheaper, and you’ll be spending less.

Why are kilns so expensive?

Kilns ranging in price can go from ambient temperature up to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Quality, however, most often translates to higher material costs, which are passed on to the consumer as a higher price tag. As the kiln cools, components undergo stress as well.

Why did my pottery explode in the kiln?

The main reason that pottery explodes in the kiln is residual moisture left in the clay body even when it appears bone dry. Once the kiln reaches 212F, the moisture starts to turn into steam. It expands very rapidly and the pottery shatters to accommodate the steam.

How far from the wall should a kiln be?

The minimum spacing between the kiln and nearby walls is 12”. In addition to the 12”, plan for generous spacing around the kiln to promote good ventilation. Include room for steel shelves to hold ceramic ware. Maintain a minimum of 3 feet of space between kilns to prevent heat buildup around the kilns.

Does a kiln need its own room?

Usually, the kiln goes in the garage or basement since both areas are more likely to have the proper flooring and room needed. It is also acceptable to place a kiln in a separate building that is unheated such as a shed.

Can I put a kiln in a wooden shed?

It is quite safe to place a kiln in a wooden shed, provided enough space is left around and especially above the kiln and sensible precautions are taken.

Can I have a kiln in my apartment?

It is entirely possible to have a pottery kiln at home. To use a kiln at home you need 18 inches of clearance around the kiln. You also need to ventilate the heat and fumes from the kiln effectively. Additionally, your electricity supply needs to be enough to power the kiln.

How long does it take to fire a kiln?

This will take about 8 Hours to fire to temperature and another 12 hours to cool (depends on size of kiln).

How long does a kiln last?

If you just need to put down a number of years and cannot find out all this stuff, a nice safe middle of the road number is about 10 years.

How Much Does It Cost to Fire My Kiln?

It is good business to know your costs. Firing costs have always been somewhat of a mystery to many ceramic artists. While there are many variables that can affect the cost, the calculation is actually fairly easy. The new Skutt controller will actually calculate it for you after each firing and if you have KilnLink, it will automatically store those costs on your own personal “MySkutt” page. If you are working with an older kiln and do not have this feature you can easily calculate it using this formula.

KW Rating of Kiln x Length of Firing (Hours) x $/KW/Hr x Adjustment Factor = Cost of Firing

Example: KM1231PK 208V 1 PH kiln firing a Medium Speed ConeFire Mode Program to Cone 6 using a USA average electrical rate of $0.12 KW/Hr and a load 100 lbs in the kiln.

16.64 x 8.47 x .12 x .5 = $8.45

So $8.45 to fire one of our largest kilns with a full load to CONE 6! A lot less than most people think. A model 818 fired to Cone 06 was only $2.83. Now I know that a lot of you are pretty observant and are going “hey. what is this mysterious Adjustment Factor?” In order to better understand this we need to look a little closer at all of the variables individually. You will see why this number is a sort of best guess due to the variability of variables.

Wattage

This one is pretty straight forward. If you look on the serial plate on your control box one of the pieces of data is the Wattage rating of the kiln. This is the amount of energy that particular model uses when it is brand new and on 100% of the time for 1 hour. Since you are charged in Kilowatt hours, and this number on the control box is listed in wattage hours, you need to divide this number by 1000 before plugging it into the formula.

As your elements age they lose some of their power so this number will slowly drop as your elements age. This number is also based on having the exact voltage of the rating of the kiln available, under load (while kiln is on), during the entire firing. The odds of this happening is pretty slim, but if you installed the kiln correctly, it should be close. Here are some of the things that can affect your wattage:

Low Voltage Caused by Undersized Wire or Undersized Transformer (you live at the end of a country road)

Low Voltage Caused by Over Use of the Power Grid (everyone using their air conditioning on a hot summer day)

Worn Out Elements

Firing Times

There are many things that can affect the time amount of time it takes your kiln to fire a particular program. The good news is that the kiln keeps track of this and tells you how long it took after every firing. You will notice that this number will vary. Just because you tell the kiln to follow a particular program, does not mean it is capable of following the program throughout the entire firing. Because of this, the firing times will vary on the same program. Here are a few things that can affect your firing times:

The Size of the Kiln Load

The Temperature You Are Firing To

The Temperature of the Kiln Room

Price of Electricity

The cost of electricity varies all over the nation. It is usually affected by the amount of locally generated power available to a given population. Because some areas have less than power than they would like, they ration it out by charging different rates based on when you use it or what type of consumer you are. You may want to see if you get lower rates if you fire at night. If you are estimating the cost of firing your kiln in a commercial building, be sure to use the rate listed on the businesses energy bill and not your one at home. Rates can vary between $0.08 (Washington) and $0.38 (Hawaii) per kilowatt hour with the USA average being at $0.12/KW/HR for residential and $0.10 for commercial.

Adjustment Factor

The nice thing about the new Cost calculation feature in the new KilnMaster Controller (manufactured after July 2012), is that it actually calculates how long the elements are actually on. As you probably know from hearing the relays clicking, they cycle on and off to achieve the correct firing rate. The frequency of this cycling will depend on the program entered and the ability of the kiln to follow the program entered. Programs that have fast firing rates or that approach the maximum temperature rating of the kiln will generally require the relays to stay on longer. Conversely, programs with extended hold times will require less “on time” for the relays. Obviously when your relays shut off power to the elements, you are not incurring any cost so this “off time” needs to be accounted for. We have found that a good estimate, across the range of ConeFire Mode programs, is 50%.

If you have a KilnMaster kiln manufactured after July, 2012 you can Click Here to find out how to configure it to calculate your firing costs.

Kilns Frequently Asked Questions

Kiln Advice & Queries

Frequently Asked Questions

I have no experience in using a kiln – should this concern me?

Country Love Crafts can give you all the support you need in buying and setting up your kiln.

Our Start Your Own Pottery Painting Business and Glazing and Kiln Firing Training and Advice training courses both explain how to glaze, fire and manage your kiln. In addition, we are happy to provide as much telephone or e-mail support as necessary. We don’t want to sell you a kiln and leave you to struggle. Our aim is to make your business a success so that you continue to order through us – a win, win situation.

What is the most popular kiln for my business?

The Nabertherm Top 60 tends to be the most popular size kiln for hobbyists and small business owners

The Nabertherm Top 190 tends to be the next best seller but this is more suited to larger businesses like studios or clay cafes.

Can I order an electrical appliance from you with appropriate wiring for my country?

All of the electrical appliances we stock are wired for UK use. However, some of our manufacturers are able to supply country-specific wiring e.g. Nabertherm (our kiln manufacturer). Therefore, it is best to call or e-mail us with your individual enquiry.

What is included in the kiln price?

All pottery kilns come with a 3 year warranty and both Nabertherm & Potterycrafts have a UK support team. Included in the kiln price is £100 worth of free bisque (based on retail prices) and two FREE spaces on our “Glazing and Kiln Firing” course. We can also send a few bottles of underglaze and glaze to try. If you have limited knowledge of using a kiln and associated products, then please let us know and we will be happy to support you whilst you learn. For example, we provide step-by-step instructions on programming the kiln for use with our products.

Please remember that you need to ensure your insurance policy (this includes a home policy if you are based from home) is changed to reflect that you are using a kiln. Our Business Guide to Craft Insurance may help.

Please check the dimensions of every doorway and corridor to make sure that the kiln will fit through. Remember to include lift doors etc

Please check with an electrician that the ampage of the kiln will not affect the electrical supply at the site.

If you order a 13amp kiln, we do not recommend the use of extension leads with the kilns.

What if the doorway or corridor is too small to fit the kiln?

Please speak to us if you envisage problems. Our manufacturers have support teams based in the UK so we should be able to organise for the kilns to be fitted on site or seek advice regarding installation.

Will my kiln produce dangerous fumes?

Kilns are an electrical appliance and they do not emit toxic fumes. However, the products on the items fired may well cause problems such as an unpleasant smell. Most of the products we sell at Country Love Crafts are lead-free and non-toxic. For more information and guidelines on this topic, go to The Health and Safety Executive website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/ or Orton. If you are keen to vent the kiln, we do sell a kiln vent kit manufactured by Orton. There are also some good firing tips on this website.

How much does it cost to run a kiln?

This does depend on the size of the kiln, how many items are inside the kiln (if the kiln is fully loaded it will take longer to penetrate heat into the wares) and the cost you are paying per unit of electricity.

Calculating Typical Firing Costs (figures are an estimation only – all kilns and firings are unique) For our products, the firing will be typically 6-6½ hours up to a top temperature of 1020°c. We are using a “sample” rate of 12p per kw per hour. This kiln is 3kw, 230v. To cost the firing take the following: A=Kilowatt rating of kiln (taken from data plate).

B=Firing times in hours x 0.6 (since the kiln is only on full power towards the end of its cycle).

C=Cost per kilowatt/unit (taken from your electricity bill) Formula: A x B x C = 3kw x 6.5 x 0.6 x 0.12 = £1.40 for a typical 6½ hour bisque firing.

How to Calculate The Cost of Firing A Kiln

Soul Ceramics is one of the best vendors I have worked with in quite some time. Seriously. Communication through every step of my order and weekly updates on lead times of my order. The evenheat is fantastic. I ordered one with the tap controller, not sure how it compares to the other options because this is the first time I’ve got to use a furnace for heat treating. Prior to this I was only using forge treatable steels, primarily O1. Looking forward to testing some stainless blades soon. Personally I’d rather make carbon blades, but a lot of my customers have been asking for stainless. Overall I would recommend you buy your knife heat treating furnace here.
