How To Get There + Training Methods

This is a comprehensive guide to Ammonite Crabs in OSRS.

In this guide you’ll learn:

What are Ammonite Crabs in OSRS?

Cb Level Hitpoints EXP/kill 25 100 400 Ammonite Crabs are members of the Crab Family. Crabs are aggressive low-level monsters that are PERFECT for combat training due to their low defensive and offensive stats. Ammonite Crabs are better than Sand or Rock Crabs as they have 100 hitpoints and you receive 400 exp per kill. On top of that, they are often less crowded as well as newer players have a harder time reaching the area (Fossil Island) because it is quest-locked. Due to their aggressive nature, Ammonite Crabs are perfect for AFK training. Just make sure your auto-retaliate is turned on and your character will do the rest. Ammonite Crabs are the only member of the Crab Family that you cannot kill with a cannon. If you want to use a cannon, you should train at Rock Crabs or Sand Crabs instead.

What are the requirement for Ammonite Crabs?

Ammonite Crabs are the only members of the Crab Family that have requirements to access them.

In order to access Ammonite Crabs, you need to complete the following two quests:

The Digsite

Bone Voyage

These quests are easy to complete and should only take an hour of your time. If you wish to access Ammonite Crabs you’ll need the following requirements for the quests:

10 Agility

10 Herblore

25 Thieving

100 Varrock Museum kudos

If you don’t want to do any questing, we recommend that you either train at Sand Crabs or Rock Crabs instead.

These two crabs are similar to Ammonite Crabs but hold no requirements to access them.

Here’s our Guide on how to get to Sand Crabs. (best option)

And Here’s our Guide on how to get to Rock Crabs.

How to get to Ammonite Crabs

In order to get to Ammonite Crabs, you need to make your way to Fossil Island first.

Again, you need to complete the Bone Voyage quest to access Fossil Island, don’t try to get there without the quest, it won’t work.

There are two easy ways to get to Fossil Island:

Use your Digsite Pendant to teleport

Go to the Digsite if you don’t have a Pendant and use the boat to travel

Once you reach Fossil island, you can run North towards the beaches where the Ammonite Spawns are as illustrated below.

How to get the Digsite Pendant

Obviously, you’re going to want to have the Digsite Pendant so you can just teleport to Ammonite Crabs instead of going through the Digsite every time.

Here’s how you can get the Digsite Pendant.

Warning: you need 49 magic to create the Digsite Pendant

First, go to the Varrock Museum. Enter through the side-door (on the side of the bank)

Get the tools from the tool rack. (you need all of them)

Now you need to clean some archaeological finds.

Through cleaning, you will stumble upon a clean necklace.

The drop rate for this necklace is 1/52 but it is of course based on RNG.

To do this cleaning, first, you need to collect some uncleaned finds. Collect the uncleaned finds by selecting ‘take Digsite Specimen Rocks’.

Next, use the uncleaned find on one of the specimen tables to clean them.

Now just keep doing that until you receive the clean necklace!

Once you’ve received the necklace, speak with Sinco Doar who is working on the eastern table.

Tell him you found something interesting.

He will take the necklace from you and teach you how to enchant a digsite pendant yourself.

Now you can can create the Necklace by using the Lvl-3 Enchant spell on a Ruby Necklace. You are recommended to do the spell a couple of times as each Digsite Pendant only holds 5 total teleport uses.

How to reset Ammonite Crabs

Ammonite Crabs are aggressive monsters making them great for AFKing. But just like any aggressive monster, they will become unaggressive after about 10 minutes.

Once they have become unaggressive, you will need to reset them.

To reset ammonite crabs, run a bit south and return.

PRO TIP: Runelite users (highly recommended you use Runelite to play OSRS) can use the ‘NPC Agression Timer’ plugin which will tell you exactly when the Ammonite Crabs will reset. You’ll also want to enable ‘Show Aggression Lines’ in the plugin as this will show you exactly how far you need to run to reset the crabs.

Why you should train at Ammonite Crabs

Ammonite Crabs are made for AFK-training due to their aggressive nature and the fact they are multi-combat.

You simply have to stand near them with auto-retaliate on and they will attack you.

Your character will then slay them one by one.

Ammonite crabs have low defence and attack (1) so they won’t hit you very highly (though you should bring food to increase the duration of your trips).

Ammonite crabs also have a good amount of hitpoints (100) and give 400 experience each.

This makes them far better to train at than other crabs such as Sand Crabs (60 hitpoints) and Rock Crabs (50 hitpoints).

They respawn quickly so while you are training there should never be any wait in a good world.

Training at Ammonite Crabs is beneficial and the best place to train for pures and low-level accounts.

This is also one of the best places to train melee, ranged and magic in the first couple of levels.

The Crab Family

Ammonite Crabs are part of the crab family in osrs. A family of aggressive, low-level monsters with high hitpoints and low attack and defensive stats. These monsters are preferred for low-level training. Here’s a quick run-down of the other members of the crab family and how they compare to Ammonite crabs.

Sand Crabs

Sand Crabs are located in Hosidius and can be easily accessed by anyone. If you have access to the Xeric’s Talisman (untradeable drop from Lizardmen) you can use that to easily teleport to Hosidius. Other players can Teleport to the Woodcutting Guild, set their house in Hosidius or travel there through Veos in Port Sarim (Kingdom of Kourend) Sand Crabs are slightly better to train at than Sand Crabs because they have slightly higher hitpoints. Read also: OSRS Sand Crabs Guide

Combat Lvl Hitpoints Exp/kill 15 60 240

Rock Crabs

Rock Crabs are located in Relekka and can be easily accessed by anyone. If you don’t have a teleportation method directly to Relekka, you can teleport to Camelot and run over there instead. If you don’t have the required magic level, you can use a Camelot Teleport tablet which you can from the Grand Exchange. Rock Crabs are slightly worse to train at than Sand Crabs because they have lower hitpoints. Read also: OSRS Rock Crabs Guide

Combat Lvl Hitpoints Exp/kill 13 50 200

Conclusion

Hopefully, this OSRS Ammonite Crabs guide has taught you everything you need to know about Ammonite Crabs which are one of the best places to train in the early levels. Whether you are training Melee, Ranged or even Magic, Ammonite crabs are the place to be.

If you cannot reach Ammonite Crabs due to the quest requirements, we recommend that you go to Rock Crabs or Sand Crabs instead. Both are great alternatives and can be cannoned as well which ammonite crabs cannot.

Best Spots for Ammonite Crabs (OSRS) – FandomSpot

Ammonite crabs are a unique species of crab that can be found all over (and under) Fossil Island. There are three main parts of the island in which the Ammonites reside:

The Mushroom Forest (most amount of crab spawns here) The North Wyvern Cave The Fossil Island Volcano

Similar to every other “crab”, Ammonites sport a high amount of hit points, while basically having no other combat stats.

The reason a lot of players prefer these over their cousins (rock, sand, and swamp crabs), is because they have the highest health total among all of them (a nice and round 100hp).

This makes them ideal for leisurely afk combat training (of all kinds or levels), where the goal is to just get experience with minimal effort, while not caring about profit or any of their drops.

With that said, they do have a few interesting drops worth mentioning, and those are:

Numulite (Has multiple uses throughout the island’s activities)

Easy Clue Scrolls (At a 1/128 droprate)

Seaweed Spores (Very useful for ironmen and Crafting training)

Unidentified Fossils (Used at the Varrock Museum’s exhibit, rewards lamps worth 2000 experience)

If any of those intrigue you, it might be a smart idea to make Runelite notify you whenever you get said drops, so you won’t have to constantly be on the lookout for them!

Note: In order to be able to access Fossil Island (and thus, the crabs), completion of the intermediate quest “Bone Voyage” is required.

1. The Mushroom Forest Spots

West of the Magic Mushtree

As a general rule, the best spots are the ones with the maximum amount of crabs possible (in the case of ammonites it’s usually 3).

So the first spot we’ll be talking about today is located on the beach, just a few steps west of the Mushroom Forest Magic Mushtree.

Stand next to the seashell, and start smacking the crabs!

North-East of the Tree Patches

The second three-crab-spot in the Mushroom Forest is found a few tiles northeast of the hardwood tree farming patches.

There’s a small group of 4 crabs immediately to the west of the aforementioned spot, but it might be hard to wrangle all of them at the same time.

Still, a decent spot for low-leveled players that take some time to despatch their crabs!

2. The North Wyvern Cave Spots

Cave Entrance

Venturing inside the ancient cave-systems of Fossil Island, here we can find a couple more Ammonite crab spots worth talking about.

First up, we’ve got a pair of crabs hanging out together right by the entrance of the cave.

A few wyverns can be seen from here, flapping about their wings in the adjacent southeast room. But there’s no reason to be afraid because there’s no way for them to get to you.

South-East of the Wyverns

For those willing to risk their lives, and brave enough to withstand a few hits from the wyverns, there’s a remote spot in the south-east quadrant of the cave that barely anyone uses (and you can probably guess why).

Here you can find 3 crabs just waiting for you to get your hands on them for that sweet, sweet experience.

Additionally, I personally tested and checked the aggression lines inside the cave, and you can 100% reset the crabs without running into any pesky wyverns!

3. The Fossil Island Volcano

The Volcanic Beach

The last area of Fossil Island has only one spot worth showcasing, and it’s located on the small beach south of the volcano.

A group of three, little, spiral-shelled friends can be found here, and violently assaulted for some easy and relaxed training (you monster).
