This is a relatively simple explanation of how to set up a basic WordPress theme. Including enqueueing of css and JS, as well as navigational menus, archives and pages and single blog posts. There’s much more than this, but hopefully this will give you a quick start.

  1. You created the customer code in VS Code then the theme appeared in WordPress. I’m using WordPress via domain website and I don’t know how you’ve linked vs code to your WordPress. You didn’t upload any folders or anything.

  2. How about doing a video building a multipage WordPress portfolio page where you have clickable links to other page content. EVERYONE is doing the same single page portfolio sites like there is no real creativity one long page of content doesn't seem that desirable…IJS I have yet to find anyone claiming to be web developers doing multipage builds.

  3. Just a bit confused with changing the colour of the menu names (Contact Us, About Page, Sample Page) around 1:13:00 mark. When I inspect and try to change the classes of each menu button as it was done in the video, the codes go back to what it was before when I refresh the page… Am I meant to use a programme for that section?

    The only ways I see to customize the anchor tags are either to inject custom-made JavaScript, or going through SASS with the @extend option and implementing webpack in the whole project.

    If anyone has a better idea, feel free to share.

  5. The second I added the menu code below, my wordpress site broke. It gave me the "there has been a critical error on this website" message. Any Ideas what is going on?

    function dvgroberg_menus() {
    $locations = array(
    'primary' => "Primary Navigation Menu",
    'footer' => "Footer menu items"
    );

    register_nav_menus($locations);
    }

    add-action('init', 'dvgroberg_menus');

  6. if you need an alternate way without using "echo" at 1:24:34 then this is for you: <a class="site-title pt-lg-4 mb-0" href="index.html"><?php bloginfo( $show = '') ?></a> blank ' ' is for default value, you ay use 'description' as well

  7. ok so everything works except the widget area in the footer and the custom size for thumbnails. I checked everything a gazillion times by now. No idea why. At this point I feel like there was a worpress update or something idk, might have to find someone in my social cirlce who knows more than me about coding.

  9. Hi Andrew. Thanks for giving us this great video! One thing I would like to ask you is about the possibility of adding the required classes for the nav menu directly using javascript from the main.js file. Do you think that's a good practice? or using custom walkers is always a better idea? Thanks

  10. Great tutorial, but there are a few errors, like the_title() function in the header.php file. It makes an issue on the archive page because there will be a title of the first post in this place.

  11. Around 1:10:00, you explained that we need a custom walker to add the class attribute to the anchor tag. However, soon after, you simply added the icon to the menu item by adding HTML to the title of the menu item in the WordPress interface.

    My question is, why can't we just add the entirety of the <a></a> tag inside of the title of the menu item in the WordPress interface? Whatever we put in there will be put inside of the <li> tags right? Isn't this good enough for a workaround?

  12. I have one question. What's the point of hard coding this when you can use plugin like elementor ? Are there any benefits or something worth mentioning?

    Reply
  13. I've been looking through the tutorial and he talks about walker menu. If all you want to do is add a class to anchor inside of nav menu why not just use jquery. Something like this
    $(document).ready(function(){
    $('nav ul li a').addClass('nav-link');
    })

  14. im getting 2 erros while adding code in the comments.php around the 1:43:10 part:

    Error: Call to undefined function get_comments_count() in D:WordpressSite1wp-contentthemeskhanthemecomments.php on line 9
