How To Draw Blood, Step by Step, Drawing Guide, by Dawn

Description: I know you guys are gonna freak over this next lesson because I am freaking right now just because I am uploading it to the site. For this next lesson I will be showing you how to draw blood step by step. This is the coolest looking tutorial that I have done in a while and I am very pleased on how it came out. Of course as you can tell all the special effects for coloring the blood was done in Photoshop CS while using my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. There are four different types of blood that I will show you how to draw. The first blood design is on dripping blood, like the kind you would see drooling down a wall, or other upright surfaces. The next one is on a blood splatter which is a common image seen on walls, grounds, and any other kind of surface. Blood splatter is made when blood is shot out from an object (body from an animal, creature, or human) at an accelerated speed like from a gunshot, tear, or bursting. The next design of blood that I will show you how to draw is the splatter drip. This is the same as a splat except there is blood dripping away from the splatter. A blood tear drop is another shape I show you how to do. And finally a blood puddle which is made from blood by a slow to moderate leakage. I know all these blood design descriptions are kind of brutal, but is there really any other way to describe the different shapes of blood? Drawing blood can also be done with computer illustrations and graphical designs. When you draw blood in a vector like manner, you are most likely using some graphic art skills that you either picked up through schooling or pure constant usage of working with computer graphics like me. I hope you all enjoy this awesome lesson on how to draw blood step by step. When you are done with this tutorial you will be using your newly learned skill on all your artwork that calls for a little blood. I shall return gang in a bit so stay tuned.

How to Draw Blood using smooth circles and lines

Before learning how to draw blood: some fun facts before starting sketching!

Each day, the average person will pump 300 gallons of recycled blood through his kidneys.

Each women has around 4.3 liters of blood in their bodies while men have 5.5 liters.

Step 1

Knowing how to draw cartoon blood that look convincing is not easy. A splash of blood on a wall will never look like another one. You can see on the image on your left that sometimes the blood can be ticker (1) or clearer (2).

Liquids are unpredictable so it’s important that your drawing look spontaneous. Take a good look at this image to really understand how this splash of blood was created.

Step 2

The shapes behind this image are really basics. Circles for the drops of blood and lines for the splash effect. Notice that some small drops of blood are made of circles while others are made of ovals. It’s impossible in this example to represent every single blood stain since they are too many!

Step 3

Someone has been murdered! First, draw some lines to give the impression of a splash on a wall. Then, draw a circle in the middle. Now sketch some lines to represent drops of blood going towards the floor. Finish your drawing by adding particle effect and by altering the color of the blood a little bit.

Step 4

The example above taught us how to sketch a simple splash of blood on a wall (6). But this fluid can also comes in drops (4) (3), trails (5) or stains (2). Remember to keep it spontaneous, organic and irregular. Don’t hesitate to drop some liquid on a floor if you need more inspiration or examples.

How To: Draw Realistic Blood With Prisma Colors

What you’ll need:

1 sheet of paper

Prisma Colors: Light Pink (328), Peach (339), Crimson Lake (325), and Carmine Red (326)

1 pencil

1 eraser

STEPS:

Start by using a pencil to very lightly draw any shape of a blood stain on your sheet of paper. Next, trace over the outline with the Light Pink (328) prisma color pencil. Make sure to not press down too hard. This is only an outline. Shade the blood stain very carefully and very lightly with the Light Pink (328) prisma color pencil. Take the Peach (339) prisma color pencil and lightly shade over the Light Prink (328) color pencil. Make sure to shade it in completely, but make sure to still be able to see the Light Pink under the Peach. Now comes the fun part. Grab your Carmine Red (326) prisma color pencil. Shade in the blood stain and make sure to color in a gradient way (darker shading on top and lighter shading on the bottom). Now take both the Peach (339) and Light Pink (328) color pencils again. This is for blending. Alternate between the two colors as you once again shade over the blood stain until all of the colors are very blended together. This is the most crucial part because this is the part where you will make the blood look realistic. Pick up your Crimson Lake (325) prisma color pencil. Lightly shade over the blood stain. I highly recommend that you start from the top of the blood stain and color downwards to give it a 3D effect. Make sure to color in a gradient way (darker shading on top and lighter shading on the bottom). Next, pick up your Carmine Red (326) prisma color pencil again and shade until all the colors are blended evenly. Then, draw blood splatters around your blood stain to make it look even more realistic. use the above steps to draw those blood stains (realistic looking blood stains are hard to draw tho. Make sure to draw a dot and then a line going downwards to make it look like it’s slowly rolling down). The last step involves the Peach (339) and the Carmine Red (326) prisma color pencils. Lightly shade around your blood stains and blood splatters with the Peach (339) prisma color pencil and then use the gradient technique to shade over it with the Carmine Red (326) color pencil. This will make the blood pop up more and seem like it’s sinking into the paper.

VIOLA! YOU HAVE YOURSELF A REALISTIC LOOKING BLOOD SPLATTER!
