How to Easily Get Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) Out of Your Hair
» How to Easily Get Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly) Out of Your Hair
Originally called wonder jelly, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is a mixture of natural waxes and mineral oils that locks moisture into the skin. This mixture of oils and minerals commonly moisturizes lips and skin in order to repair it and relieve dryness.
Unfortunately, Vaseline can sometimes end up in your hair. If this has happened to you, you’ll know just how annoying it is and hard it can be to remove petroleum jelly from your hair. Simply put, Vaseline is NOT made for use on the hair. It’s oily which can make your hair greasy-looking.
The thick substance can also cause your hair to clump together – seeming almost impossible to remove. However, all is not lost. There are various methods that you can use to successfully remove the sticky and oily substance from your hair.
Your options include:
Cornstarch or cornmeal powder
Baby powder
Tissue
Baking soda
A liquid laundry detergent or dish soap
Baby oil
Warm water
Peanut butter
Vinegar
Eggs
What Are the Best Ways to Remove Vaseline from Hair?
All of these methods are great when it comes to getting petroleum jelly out of your hair. You may want to ask a friend or family member to help. This can be beneficial as they can help you blot the areas that you can’t see yourself, such as the back of your head.
Cornstarch or Cornmeal Powder
This method is easy and gentle on your hair. Simply apply a little cornstarch or cornmeal powder to the hair. Use a towel or some tissue to pat the powder into the area of your hair that you want to treat. This will absorb the petroleum jelly.
Once you’re satisfied that the Vaseline has been removed, you should shampoo your hair once or twice with a clarifying shampoo. Ensure you use warm water when washing your hair since cold water can cause the Vaseline to congeal.
Baby Powder
If you would prefer to use baby powder or already have some in your home then repeat the same steps above to get results.
There are a couple of precautions to note when using baby powder:
When dabbing your hair with a towel, ensure that you don’t rub too much as this can work the petroleum deeper into your hair. Be careful if you have respiratory problems as baby powder and crushed talc can cause further medical complications.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a household staple in most homes. The easiest way to use baking soda on your hair is to remove as much of the excess Vaseline as possible prior to coating the area with baking soda.
Then, simply use paper towels or your fingers to lightly pat the powder into your hair so the greasy area is completely coated.
Another effective way to use baking soda to remove Vaseline from hair is to mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a regular baby shampoo, then wash and rinse out. You should use baby shampoo because it’s less abrasive than regular shampoos.
Liquid Laundry Detergent or Dish Soap
It may seem odd, but using standard liquid laundry detergent or dish soap to wash your hair can work wonders when it comes to tackling the grease caused by Vaseline.
There are harsher chemicals in laundry detergent and dish soap that are commonly used to target stubborn stains and greasy dishes. With this in mind, these chemicals can also be perfect for stripping your hair from hard-to-remove products, such as petroleum jelly.
All you need to do is use the dish soap like you would any other shampoo. However, because the chemicals are slightly stronger, use a regular shampoo afterward. Don’t forget to condition afterward to keep your hair smooth and sleek.
Baby Oil
Baby oil is a great way to get rid of Vaseline from hair. Granted, it can be a little messy and it is an oily substance but it works well to remove the greasiness of petroleum jelly.
Start off by saturating your hair in baby oil, rubbing it through the hair completely. Once you’ve done this, try and squeeze out as much as you can. This will remove any excess oil and the original Vaseline.
Then, wash your hair (you can do this up to three times) with either a fortifying shampoo or a liquid dish soap and warm water. Each time, leave the dish soap or shampoo on for a few minutes to allow it to work.
Have a lot of towels to hand if you choose this method as it can be a messy process.
Warm Water
Sometimes, you just can’t beat using warm water to clean sticky or greasy stuff from your hair. Of course, you can use warm water and shampoo. However, if you do use shampoo, ensure that it’s labeled deep-cleansing or clarifying as these types will have the best results.
Try not to overuse them as these stronger shampoos are made to strip hair and styling products from your hair. This can be damaging to your hair if used too much.
Keep rinsing your hair until the water runs clear instead of cloudy or soapy. Never use cold water to wash your hair. This can make the Vaseline clump and thicken.
Peanut Butter
This is a weird one and probably not something that you want to get into the habit of putting on your hair but oddly, peanut butter is a method that will remove Vaseline from hair.
Apply peanut butter to where the Vaseline is on your hair and massage in with your hands. It feels gross, but it really does work!
Ensure you apply a good amount of peanut butter to the affected areas and leave it on for around 10 minutes. Then, massage your hair for 10 minutes ensuring the substance is mixed right in. Once the peanut butter is set, use a hairbrush to remove the Vaseline and peanut butter mixture from hair. Make sure that you wash your brushes and combs when you’re done.
This is the one exception where you can use cold water to rinse your hair. This is the most effective way to remove the remaining blend of peanut butter and Vaseline. After you’ve rinsed it with cold water, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner and hot water like normal.
Vinegar
Much like baking soda, vinegar is another household staple that can resolve a myriad of problems. Because of the high acidity levels, vinegar can remove some seriously stubborn substances from a number of places – your hair included.
Mix half a cup of vinegar with half a cup of warm water and rinse your hair with it. Once you’ve done this, and are happy that the Vaseline is completely removed from your hair, wash your hair as normal.
Repeat if and when necessary but due to the acidity levels of vinegar, it’s advised not to do this on a regular basis.
Eggs
Whisked eggs can be ideal when it comes to removing vaseline from your hair. This one may be left as a last resort, however, due to the mess and more notably, the smell!
All you need to do is get a couple of eggs and whisk them together. Then like you would with a shampoo or conditioner, wash your hair with the mixture. This experience can be rather unpleasant and eggs are a really odd consistency when washing your hair.
However, if you don’t mind all that, it can be a really effective method in removing Vaseline from your hair so it may be worthwhile to just grin and bear it.
Why Conditioning the Hair is So Important
If you think about how much we put our hair through on a daily basis (washing, drying, styling, the environment etc.), it’s almost a miracle that it survives it all. Therefore, it’s so important to look after it in any way you can. Invest in a good quality conditioner and use afterward to prevent damage.
If you prefer to use natural ingredients as opposed to conditioners that may include some chemicals, the following are excellent when caring for your hair and can also be used in the treatment of exposure to Vaseline:
Coconut oil
Extra virgin olive oil
Rosemary essential oil
Avocado oil
Jojoba oil
Pomegranate seed oil
No matter what method you choose to remove petroleum jelly from your hair, be careful not to get any in your eyes. If you have a detachable shower head, always use this for the best rinse.
Why Is Vaseline Hard to Remove From Hair?
Vaseline is a strong mixture of a range of oils, minerals, and chemicals. While it is great for a range of uses, it can be so difficult to get out of hair. The reason for this is because our hair is very porous and soaks substances up easily.
Vaseline and other brands of petroleum jelly are quite a clingy, stubborn substance that can stick to the hair very easily. This is why extreme care should be taken when using Vaseline or other types of petroleum jelly near your hair.
Will Vaseline Eventually Come Out of Hair?
As outlined in many of the removals above, you can be happy in the knowledge that you will eventually get Vaseline out of your hair. As long as you follow the appropriate steps, your hair will be Vaseline free in no time.
The best way to avoid any future issues is to try and prevent getting Vaseline or other types of petroleum jelly in your hair when you use it again. It can save a lot of time and hassle.
Avoid any beauty tips or routines that state you should put petroleum jelly in your hair.
Will My Hair Be Damaged?
As long as you act quickly and use natural remedies, there should be no long-lasting damage to your hair.
Invest in good quality (sometimes this does mean expensive) hair care products. Good quality products can go a long way in improving and maintaining your hair.
Although expensive, regular visits to a hairdresser can be beneficial. A hairdresser will use state-of-the-art products and technology to look after your hair and scalp – preventing any long-lasting damage.
What Does Vaseline Do For Hair: All You Need To Know
Celebrities use it to prevent lipstick from reaching their teeth. Some women use it to prolong the effect of their perfume on their skin. Some men use it to groom facial hair.
Your mother probably used it time and again to remove gum from your hair. Your grandmother probably used it to get rid of lice. Your great-great-grandfather is likely to have used it to treat skin wounds.
Vaseline has a long history of usage in skin and hair care. But… there’s always a but. While vaseline does plenty of good to your hair, it can also cause some trouble.
The worst: hair greasiness, tangling, and hair loss. Make sure to keep the good, prevent the bad and avoid the ugly!

What is vaseline, aka petroleum jelly?
You may know it as petroleum jelly. You may know it as vaseline. But, what does vaseline do?
It doesn’t matter how you call it; petroleum jelly, known by its brand name, vaseline, is designed to create a barrier on the skin and hair to lock in the moisture.
The blend of mineral oils and natural waxes contained by vaseline seals in the moisture in the dermis and the hair cuticles.
But is that good or bad? Well, as it is in life, it’s both. And sometimes, it can get ugly. Discover how to fully benefit from vaseline in your beauty regimen and how to avoid the ugly!
The benefits of vaseline for your skin and scalp
Oil workers used petroleum jelly (petrolatum) to heal their wounds and burns. Due to its mix of waxes and mineral oils, vaseline gives your skin the perfect protective barrier.
That hasn’t changed since the mid-1800s when petrolatum was discovered. Since then, people recommended vaseline for hair care as well.
Is it safe to use petroleum on your skin? Should you ever apply it to your hair, scalp, eyebrows, and lashes? Here’s all you need to know about what does vaseline do!
Vaseline helps heal minor skin wounds, such as scrapes and burns. According to studies, when applied to a disinfected wound, petroleum jelly keeps the skin hydrated, aiding in healing.
Petroleum jelly prevents rashes, such as diaper rash. One study shows vaseline prevents diaper rashes from developing.
Vaseline can be used as make-up removal and is safe to use around the eyes, one study says.
Petrolatum prevents skin stains from hair dye and nail polish. When applied on your nail cuticles and your hairline vaseline creates a barrier that cannot be penetrated—less work after dyeing and having a manicure at home.
Vaseline is of great aid in moisturizing the skin. Petroleum jelly is an occlusive product. It can keep the skin moist and hydrated and can come in handy to take care of cracked heels, chapped lips, dry noses, and sensitive skin. Since it softens rough skin, it can also be applied to pet paws.
Vaseline can be used in your manicures and makes your cuticles softer and better-looking.
Petrolatum is a great lube and can be used to prevent skin chafing. This reduces skin irritations, blisters, and wounds.
Is vaseline bad for your hair? Should you use it in your beauty routine?
Most of us know vaseline comes in handy in skincare routines. But what are the effects of vaseline on hair? Can it be applied to soothe irritated scalp?
Is it good to prevent hair damage, breakage, and even hair loss? Is vaseline good for hair growth? Or should you never apply it to your hair?
Is vaseline good for frizzy hair?
Vaseline can be used as a styling gel for frizzy hair. Dry hair can benefit from applying a pea-sized amount of vaseline on it.
Not only will it not make hair crunchy or greasy, as other styling products do, but it will help seal in moisture. Vaseline will help tame the frizz, helping the hair lay down flat.
Can you use vaseline on your scalp?
Petroleum jelly is recommended for dry scalp issues. When applied properly, it has a non-comedogenic effect.
It can combat flakiness, scaling, and itching usually associated with dandruff. One study even mentions it as a treatment for seborrheic dermatitis.
Is vaseline good for split ends?
Dry hair can be a result of sun exposure, hard water, pool water, and/or a bad hair routine.
Applying a pinch of vaseline to your hair can help reduce the appearance of split ends. When used onto your hair before going to the pool or swimming in the sea, vaseline prevents dryness.
Does petroleum jelly help hair to grow faster?
There are some theories that vaseline aids in hair loss, and that you can use vaseline for hair growth. There are no active ingredients in vaseline for promotion of natural process of hair growth.
No-one can outright say vaseline is good for hair growth. But, since it creates a barrier on the hair shaft, petroleum jelly makes the hair less prone to breakage.
Does vaseline help eyebrows grow? How about lashes?
Before using it topically on your skin, it’s recommended you do a patch skin test. If your skin is prone to breakouts, even the tiniest amount of vaseline can have unwanted side effects.
When it comes to eyelashes and brows, use a small amount of vaseline (smaller than a grain of rice) and make sure to calibrate your expectations.
Petrolatum will not speed up the hair’s natural growing process. But when it comes to eyebrows, it will prevent breakage, and it can stylize them, smoothing down flyaways.
It will also make your eyelashes seem longer and thicker, defining them.
What does vaseline do to your hair: the side effects
Vaseline should be used in small quantities. When it comes to hair care, it should never be used more than once a week.
When applied in large quantities and when not properly cleansed, vaseline does more harm than healing to your hair.
If not removed from your scalp, it creates a breeding ground for bacteria and can even block hair follicles.
While a barrier of petroleum jelly can prevent hair breakage, mineral oil must be removed from the hair. If not, the strands will get greasy, tangled, and can even break.
Using a vaseline treatment can be helpful. Not to mention it’s cheap and easy to find. But mineral oil is hard to remove by the natural, protecting mechanisms of your body.
Mineral oils and waxes in petroleum jelly need to be removed actively. Baking soda, activated charcoal, and especially a clarifying shampoo are to be used to get rid of petroleum jelly.
How can you clarify mineral oil from your hair?
It’s important not to leave vaseline in your hair for a long time. Do not count on “it will go away on its own.” It will not. It will stay, and it will not be a good guest.
Nor will it be easily removed by brushing, using a towel, or simply washing it with your regular shampoo.
You can get the opposite effect: hair tangling, breakage, and hair loss. Petroleum jelly can even block out the shampoo, so it’s highly recommended you use a clarifying shampoo.

How To Get Vaseline Out of Hair With 11 Easy Methods
Vaseline is an excellent product that can be found in most households in North America. It is inexpensive, and its list of uses is endless.
Hair grease, which is sometimes referred to as Vaseline or petroleum jelly, is commonly used in the natural hair community by many women. Some women love using hair grease; others loathe the product.
However, Vaseline is an extremely greasy substance, and accidentally getting it in your hair can cause a real problem.
Once it gets stuck in your hair, it can be extremely difficult to remove, but with a few helpful household ingredients and a little bit of “elbow grease,” you can have your hair clean and Vaseline-free once again.
In this article, we’ll discuss how to get Vaseline out of your hair using a few simple techniques. It’s important to note that you might have to repeat some of the steps depending on the amount of Vaseline stuck in your hair.
How To Get Vaseline Out of Hair: Best Methods
While Vaseline has many helpful uses around the house, it can be extremely troublesome to remove from your hair. Here are some tips and tricks that will make removing it from your hair a much easier task.
Clarifying Shampoo (or a Traditional Shampoo)
Clarifying shampoo can be purchased from nearly any drug store or beauty supply shop. It is specially formulated to strip hair of oils, product-up, and excess debris. It works well at removing an oily substance like Vaseline and should be your first option.
To try this method, first, use a paper towel to remove as much of the excess Vaseline as possible and take care not to spread the Vaseline throughout the rest of your hair.
Next, thoroughly wet your hair with lukewarm water and add a generous amount of clarifying shampoo, especially to the areas that are most affected by the Vaseline. Work the shampoo into a lather, focusing on the oiliest areas, and then rinse.
This process will provide a deep cleansing but may need to be repeated multiple times to remove all traces of the Vaseline. Using shampoo is the best way to remove Vaseline from your hair strands.
Once the Vaseline clump has been removed, use a moisturizing conditioner since a clarifying cleanser can make your hair dry. Moisturizing your hair is always recommended after using stronger shampoos.
How To Get Vaseline Out of Baby Hair
Please note that if your baby or kid has grease stuck in their hair, we recommend using a baby shampoo – Johnson’s, Shea Moisture, Pipette, and Babyganics are all great brands. Check out the popular baby shampoo brands using this Amazon link.
Liquid Dish Soap
If Dawn dishwashing liquid can remove oil from birds trapped in an oil slick, then it will have no problem dealing with a bit of Vaseline that has gotten stuck in your hair.
Dish soap, like Dawn detergent, is specially formulated to break down grease and oil, so Vaseline will be no match for its power. As usual, first, remove as much of the excess Vaseline as possible using paper towels.
Make sure there are no lumps or clumps in your hair. Excess Vaseline will just spread to other areas of your head and will make the problem even worse.
Wet your hair and then apply a small amount of dish soap to the area affected by the Vaseline and work it into a good, soapy lather. Allow the suds to sit and soak into your hair for at least fifteen minutes.
Rinse your hair and repeat this step if necessary. You may also want to give your hair a good wash with your regular shampoo afterward as well.
Other than using shampoo, Dawn dish detergent (or dishwashing soap) is the most effective way to remove the Vaseline.
Glycerin Soap
Glycerin soap is a type of soap that is made from natural oils and fats. Because of this, it can be very effective at breaking down the oils in Vaseline and removing it from your hair.
It can be purchased in a liquid form or as a bar, and it will work to remove Vaseline from your hair. First, wipe out all extra Vaseline (if possible) using an absorbent paper towel.
Next, wet the area of hair that contains the Vaseline. If you are using the bar form of glycerin soap, wet it with hot water. Using downward strokes only, rub it onto the affected area of hair until it forms a good, soapy lather.
If you are using the liquid form of glycerin soap, apply a small amount to your fingertips and then carefully rub it into the Vaseline.
Gently rub this soap in and allow it to sit on the hair for approximately twenty minutes. Over this period of time, you can apply more soap if you feel it is necessary. Afterward, wash the soap from your hair and then shampoo.
Note: Using a good clarifying shampoo, traditional shampoo, liquid dish soap, glycerin soap, bar soap, or even a regular baby shampoo are the best ways to remove Vaseline.
If none of these options are available, then we’ve included additional options in this article. However, many of the options below are a hassle, and it’s better to go purchase a clarifying shampoo or simply use dish soap.
How To Get Vaseline Out Without Washing Your Hair
Most of our recommendations include washing your hair, at least eventually, including the ones below. However, if you can’t wash your hair immediately, please follow up by washing your hair as soon as possible.
Vinegar
Vinegar has great cleaning properties and can help you remove Vaseline from your hair if you find yourself in this unfortunate situation.
Any type of vinegar will work, but apple cider vinegar is known to be one of the best for using in your hair. Once you have removed the excess Vaseline from your hair, spray the affected area with a bit of vinegar and wipe your hair in a downward direction.
Continue this process, using a clean paper towel each time, and soon, all traces of the Vaseline will have vanished.
Cornstarch
Cornstarch is a cooking ingredient found in most kitchens and is a finely ground powder made from cornflour starch. This powder is very good at absorbing oils and can help to remove Vaseline from your hair.
To try this method, first, remove as much Vaseline out of your hair as possible using a paper towel. Wipe in a downward direction, ensuring that you don’t spread the Vaseline throughout the rest of your hair.
Next, apply a little cornstarch to the Vaseline and allow it to sit on the hair for at least ten minutes. The cornstarch will absorb the oil from the Vaseline, making it much easier to remove.
After the ten minutes is up, carefully use a paper towel to remove the rest of the Vaseline. If the area still seems extremely greasy, use another application of corn starch and allow it to sit again.
Finally, once all of the oil seems to have been removed, give your hair a good washing using either your regular shampoo (or clarifying shampoo) and condition afterward.
Olive Oil (and Natural Oils)
Because Vaseline is an oil-based product and is not soluble in water, using another oily substance to remove it makes sense.
Olive oil is a common product found in most households, and it is relatively inexpensive to use, especially since you don’t need a large quantity.
First, remove any clumps of Vaseline from your hair and separate all of the unaffected hair by clipping it or tying it back.
Next, apply a small amount of olive oil to your fingertips and gently massage into the Vaseline. Work it into the affected area of your hair; allow it to sit and completely soak in for at least ten to fifteen minutes.
After this time has passed, use a few paper towels and blot the area, soaking up as much oil as possible. Using a downward motion, gently wipe out all of the remaining oil and Vaseline.
Your hair will still feel greasy after this, so a good wash with shampoo will be necessary.
If you don’t have olive oil, it’s fine to substitute it with other natural oils. For example, you can use jojoba oil, virgin coconut oil, vegetable oil, almond oil, and other essential oils to replace olive oil during this process. Mineral oils have also been used successfully.
Skin-Safe Adhesive Remover
Some adhesive removers are safe to use on your skin and hair and can work wonders at removing sticky, gooey substances like Vaseline. Just make sure that you read the labels carefully before applying them to your hair to ensure it is safe.
Also, these products should only be used as a last resort and only if the area affected by the Vaseline is very small. To use, wipe away all excess Vaseline and tie back all of the unaffected hair.
Apply a very small amount of adhesive remover to a cotton ball and gently wipe the affected area of your hair in a downward direction.
You should find that most of the Vaseline is easily removed this way. Still, you may want to give your hair a good wash afterward with either your usual shampoo to completely remove all remaining residue.
Baby Oil
It may seem counterintuitive to use an oily substance like baby oil to remove a greasy product like Vaseline, but it actually works!
Since Vaseline isn’t water-soluble, it will take another oil-based product in order to remove it, making baby oil an easy and inexpensive option.
Once all of the excess Vaseline has been removed, and all of the unaffected hair has been clipped or tied back, apply a small amount of baby oil to either your fingertips or to a cotton ball.
Massage the baby oil into the area and allow it to sit for several minutes and thoroughly saturate the hair. Wash your hair and repeat the process if necessary.
Cornmeal Powder
This home remedy for removing Vaseline from your hair may be a bit messy, but it can be very effective. Cornmeal is a fine powder that comes from ground-up, dried corn.
It is very absorbent and can effectively soak up a gooey mess, greasy stuff, and oily substances like Vaseline. To try this method, first, remove all excess Vaseline and ensure there are no clumps.
Use a paper towel or tissue to gently wipe and blot out all of the excess Vaseline. This will leave only the oily residue remaining.
Apply a liberal amount of the cornmeal onto the affected hair and allow it to sit for a few minutes. It will soak up the oil and begin to clump up.
When this happens, remove the cornmeal and apply another application of it (as needed). This may need to be done a few times to remove all of the excess oil. Wash your hair afterward with your regular shampoo or with a clarifying shampoo.
Baking Soda (or Baking Powder)
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a fine powder that is an excellent deodorizer and is also great at soaking up grease and oil. It is an inexpensive product that is commonly found around the house in the fridge or pantry.
Baking soda is also extremely absorbent, making it a great choice to remove grease and oil from your hair.
Once all of the excess Vaseline has been removed from your hair, apply a liberal amount of baking soda to the greasy area and work it into your hair with your fingertips.
Apply more if necessary, and then allow it to sit on your strands and soak up all of the excess oil. This process may take five to ten minutes, after which time you can remove the baking soda and reapply if necessary.
Afterward, you may want to wash your hair with shampoo to remove all extra residue and the remnants of the baking soda as well.
Flour
Most homes contain baking flour, which is an excellent alternative to removing Vaseline from your hair if you are in a pinch. Not only is it inexpensive, but it is extremely absorbent.
Using a tissue, old towel, or paper towel, remove as much of the Vaseline as possible from your hair. Apply the flour and gently work it between your strands of hair to ensure that the entire affected area is completely coated.
The flour will quickly absorb the excess grease and will begin to clump up. When this happens, remove the flour and reapply until all traces of the Vaseline are gone.
If you would like, you can wash your hair with shampoo afterward.
