How to Apply the Perfect Toupee Tape

It’s a fine line to create the perfect hairline. Attaching a toupee or other hair replacement system takes skill, patience, and practice. The goal is to achieve a natural, long-lasting look. However, without the right adhesive product to start, the hair replacement system won’t stay put for very long.

Toupee tape is one of the strongest and most popular adhesives available. The correct application is crucial for optimal results. Follow these six simple steps to apply the perfect toupee tape every time.

Proper Scalp Preparation

Before beginning, check the scalp area to see if there is any hair where the toupee will be applied. If so, remove/shave it. For a successful application, you must ensure that the scalp is washed, clean, and completely dry. We recommend using our Sunshine Alcohol Remover to accomplish this while also enhancing the security of the bond between the toupee tape and scalp.

Toupee Tape Application

Prior to the actual tape application, it’s important to use a high-quality product to protect your client’s scalp from potential irritation. The Sunshine Tape Skin Prep provides a perfect protective and waterproof barrier for toupee tape. (Plus, it’s 100% hypoallergenic and made in the U.S.)

Next, cut the tape to the desired length and size based on your customer’s head. You can use a tape roll or pre-cut toupee tape contours, depending on your preference.

Peel off the backing and apply the tape along the perimeter in the shape of your client’s hair. Be careful not to touch the adhesive portion. Toupee tape is meant to be invisible, so do not place it directly on the hairline. The ideal spot is usually about one inch behind the natural hairline and temples. This placement will give you a secure and seamless look.

Remove the remaining protective paper so the double-sided adhesive is exposed on top. Do not allow the toupee hairs to touch this portion.

Position the hair replacement wig or toupee, and roll it back across the perimeter of the scalp. Confirm there are no wrinkles and the piece is completely secure before moving to the final step.

Once in place, advise the client not to wash the hair for at least 24 hours. To blend the hair replacement system with the natural hair, apply a light spritz of water and comb it through.

Our Sunshine Toupee Tape products are all designed to be long-lasting, waterproof, and hypoallergenic. We have some of the strongest tapes on the market, which means your clients will leave happy with a hair replacement system that can last up to 8 weeks. Browse our selection, send us a message, or give us a call at 954-458-9790 to find the ideal toupee tape products for your clients.

Hairpiece Types, Human Hair, Adhesive, and More

The best hairpieces are custom-made of quality human hair matched to the hair of the client. This matching includes the color, texture, natural curl or wave (straightness), as well as hair density (thickness). The hairs of less expensive hairpieces may be made either of a moderate quality human hair, animal hair, or artificial fibers.

Today’s hair systems use primarily two materials to construct the bases, either meshes, polymers, or a combination of the two.

The base of the hair system is simply the foundation of the prostheses in which the hair is either tied or injected.

Hairpieces are the most popular method of hair replacement, but the cost and appearance of any given hairpiece varies widely based on the materials used and the level of craftsmanship in their creation.

A hairpiece, is a hairpiece, is a hairpiece regardless of what they may be called. Hair systems, toupees, strand-by-strand insertion systems, hairpieces, etc., are all terms used to market the same product. These are all hair prostheses constructed in a similar fashion using similar materials, many of which come from the same few manufacturers.

The most expensive and mid-priced hairpieces are made from European hair that once grew naturally in a wide variety of colors, textures, densities, and levels of curl, wave, or straightness. The least expensive hairpieces are made from dark, straight Asian hair that has been dyed or bleached. Although Asian hair is very strong, the coloring processes make it brittle and dry, so it breaks easily. These hairpieces can begin to look fuzzy very quickly and need to be replaced often. Human hair is fragile, so even the most expensive and expertly made hairpiece needs regular maintenance and needs to be replaced after time.

Attaching the Hairpiece Keep in mind that the way you attach your hairpiece will greatly affect the hair that may be directly under it or adjacent to it. A hairpiece can accelerate hair loss on the part of your head directly underneath it. This is especially true of those hairpieces that are attached by bonding, a strong glue kind of adhesive, or that are attached by the weaving process. Clips cause minimal hair loss.

Semi-Permanent Attached Hairpieces Hairpieces that are semi-permanently attached are not designed to be removed, except by a hair technician or stylist, usually once every six weeks. In most cases, they are affixed to the scalp by various liquid adhesives. This process has many names — poly fuse, naturalbond, polybond, or just plain bonding — for the same result, gluing a hairpiece on your head. This can be very unhealthy for you, your head, and your hair. Shampooing can’t remove the natural accumulation of flaked-off skin cells, oil, shed hair, and other organic debris that accumulate between the hairpiece and the scalp. Even if you have this kind of hairpiece, whether it’s attached by bonding or weaving (the hair is woven into the bottom of the hairpiece to secure it to your head), it should be loosened or removed at least once every five days so that you can properly clean the scalp underneath.

How to Attach a Toupee

Despite the common media gags of the wind blowing off a men’s toupees, men’s hairpieces are actually very secure when attached properly. The most common adhesive is toupee tape, which comes in different widths and contour shapes to fit the the polyurethane perimeter where it can be safely applied without harming the wig.

The most common shapes are A, B, CC, and D contours, of which A or B are usually applied at the front of the wig while CC or D are applied at the back. Straight strips are also available for application on the sides or for custom application. The right tape for your wig depends on its shape. If you’re unsure what to choose, contact our helpful staff at Wig-A-Do, who can help you pick the right adhesive for your toupee.

But before you apply the tape, there are some important preliminary steps that will help the maintain a strong, long-lasting bond between the adhesive and your scalp. Following these steps can help lengthen the bond time by 10% or more.

Preparing Your Scalp:

1. Wipe your head with a damp cloth until all visible traces of adhesive are removed.

2. Apply adhesive remover to a paper towel and scrub your head vigorously to remove any remaining residue.

3. Wash your scalp and hair with shampoo, preferably twice.

4. Use an exfoliating scrub to remove any last traces of adhesive residue (recommended).

5. Dry your head and hair thoroughly.

6. Shave your scalp to remove any stray hairs or stubble that may have grown underneath your toupee.

7. Apply a layer of scalp protector around the perimeter of your scalp where the adhesive will be applied. This not only encourages a strong bond, but also protects your skin.

Preparing the Toupee:

1. Turn the toupee inside out and place it on a wig stand or over a towel wadded into roughly the shape of your head. It’s important not to lay the hairpiece flat while applying the adhesive, as this can both damage the toupee and complicate the application of the tape.

2. Check the toupee carefully for any adhesive leftover from the last application. If any remains, spray it with a light coat of solvent and remove it before applying a new layer of tape.

3. Remove the backing from the tape you wish to apply to the back of the toupee (often the CC or D contour piece). Apply the tape to the polyurethane strip around the perimeter of the toupee, being careful to match the contours of the tape to those of the hairpiece.

4. Peel up the corners of the paper from both sides of the tape, leaving a small piece of exposed tape on either side.

5. Apply tape to the sides of the toupee, making sure it overlaps with the exposed areas of the contour piece in the back.

6. Apply the contour shape that belongs at the front of the toupee (usually the A or B shape). If you have a narrow toupee, overlap this tape with the tape at the sides. Otherwise, it’s acceptable to leave a small gap.

7. Remove the paper from the front of the tape.

Applying the Toupee:

1. Moisten your scalp with water. This will delay the adhesive from bonding when it touches your scalp, giving you time to readjust the position of the hairpiece, if necessary.

2. Place the toupee lightly on your head and position it.

3. Press down firmly around the base of the hairpiece to activate the tape and secure the bond.

If you have difficulty the first time you try to apply your toupee, or want to see the process demonstrated for you, give our staff here at Wig-A-Do a call at (856) 235-3534. We’d be happy to help you learn how to comfortable and confidently work with your hair system.
