How to Shrink a Basketball Jersey
Whether you’ve purchased or were provided with a jersey that is too big or you’ve recently lost some weight, you may be wondering if it’s possible to shrink a basketball jersey. Luckily for you, shrinking a basketball jersey is easy to do and will save you some money doing it at home instead of taking it to a tailor.
Below, we are going to explain, step-by-step, how to shrink a basketball jersey. However, please note, this shrinking process can only work on jerseys made of a finely knit type of material. If your jersey is made of synthetic fibers, such-as polyester, then the below process won’t work.
However, if your jersey is a mix of both synthetic and natural fibers, then the process outlined below should still work.
Whatever your reason for wanting to shrink your basketball jersey, the below guide will walk you through doing just that in an easy and straightforward manner at home.
Things You’ll Need
While shrinking your basketball jersey is relatively simple, there are a few household items you will need before you can get started. Firstly, you will need a washing machine and dryer. The washing machine and dryer combination are absolutely essential to the process, and you will not be able to shrink your basketball jersey without either.
In addition to a washing machine and dryer, you will need an iron to remove any wrinkles that may be left over.
Check the Label
As stated above, this process only works on natural materials or a mix of synthetic and natural materials. If your basketball jersey is made up of only synthetic materials, then this process will not work.
Place the Basketball Jersey in the Washing Machine
Once you have determined the type of material of your basketball jersey, and determined that it is made of natural ones, simply place the basketball jersey into the washing machine and select a hot wash and medium rinse cycle.
Placing the Basketball Jersey into the Dryer
Once the washing machine cycle has completed, take the basketball jersey out of the washer and place in the dryer. Set the dryer to high heat, the same setting which is used for towels and heavy fabrics. Halfway through the drying cycle, check on the shirt to confirm it has begun to shrink.
If, once the dryer has completed its cycle, you are not satisfied with the shrinkage, simply repeat the drying cycle until fully satisfied.

Always wash inside out.
The inside of a washing machine is a very hostile environment for clothes, let alone the delicate designs on sports jerseys. The best thing you can do to protect the numbers, logos and patches on your jersey is to turn it inside out before washing. This will prevent the jersey from rubbing against other jerseys, the inside of the washing machine or even against itself.
Allow to pre-soak in detergent prior to washing.
Ideally, you’ll want to pre-soak your jersey in cold water with detergent prior to washing it. There are two very common ways people do this. For equipment managers of professional and collegiate sports programs who have plenty of room, it may be easiest to fill up a few plastic garbage bins with jerseys, water and detergent and let it sit on the bus back home. First, always wash in cold water! This will prevent colors running from your jersey and looking faded. Second, try to wash jerseys with identical jerseys or alone. By adding additional clothes into the wash, especially items with different colors, you risk having the colors from those items running and staining your jersey.
Never wash with jeans, towels or items with zippers.
Aside from colors running, another thing you want to avoid is unnecessary friction against your jerseys while they are being washing. The worst culprits for this are jeans, towels or items with zippers. While you should aim for washing jerseys separately, if you absolutely need to add them to another wash, at least make sure none of these items are in the same wash.
Never put in dryer. Air dry instead.
Dryers are also rough on your jerseys. Not only can they also cause unnecessary friction on your jersey and cause pilling, but they may also shrink your jersey. Avoid all of these potential problems by simply air-drying your jerseys.
Use a detergent designed to clean jerseys.

Average detergents aren’t designed to handle these sorts of stains, sweat and body odor.
