Why does Apple make it so hard to completely erase things?

Apple’s goal is your ease of use across all devices. You want to make sure you never receive data that is valuable to you. Since you want to keep most things, including messages along with photos, videos, and other items, they make it difficult to remove things completely.

Even if you factory reset your iPhone, your messages will be available unless you deleted them from iCloud/iTunes backups.

What about other apps?

Other apps like WhatsApp have their own methods of deleting. For the most part, you can either tap on specific messages to remove or discard entire conversations. As with iMessage, you also need to delete chat backups to ensure the message is completely gone.

How to delete text messages on android

To delete a text message using Android’s default messaging service, open the Messages app. Then tap and hold the message you want to delete. Then click the Delete button.

Alternatively, you can delete multiple messages at once by selecting them and removing them all at once.

How do I delete text messages from other apps?

Each messaging app has specific deletion procedures. In general, you should be able to tap and delete a specific message. You can also delete entire conversations and remove them from cloud backups.

What about deleted message recovery?

If you accidentally deleted something, the message may be recoverable. There are some third party apps that you can use to do this. But they’re not cheap (between $50 and $80).

Options like Wondershare Dr. Fone and FonePaw can help you dig up not only deleted text messages but also other data like apps, pictures, videos and other data that you might want to get back. Be aware that there is no guarantee these apps will work as it can be difficult to safely recover deleted data, but they are generally quite effective.

How to completely erase text messages on Android

To ensure messages are completely deleted and unrecoverable, you need to do more than just delete specific messages or conversations. You need to factory reset your device when you first buy it. Note that this will erase all data from your phone, so make sure you back up any important data.

How to delete text messages on your smartphone

Both Apple and Android intentionally make it difficult for you to delete text messages quickly and easily. As with everything you do on your phone, it’s about making sure you always have access to your data — even data you didn’t think you wanted or needed.

If you want to quickly delete messages, you can just tap and delete them on both platforms. However, if you need something more thorough and secure, you need to verify that the message has been removed from cloud backups as well. In the most severe cases, you may even have to factory reset your phone. This is the only way to ensure that an SMS is really gone forever.

What is the unsent message project?

The Unsent Project is a collection of over 40,000 unsent text messages to first loves. The messages are submitted anonymously from people all over the world. The content of the submissions are wide ranging, encompassing just about every emotion.

Artist Rora Blue explores the connections between what we communicate (and what we don’t), color and the processing of emotions. She is best known for The Unsent Project, After the Beep and Handle With Care. We asked her 10 questions to learn more about her work.

1. Tell us about the Unsent Project and After the Beep.

The Unsent Project is a collection of over 40,000 unsent text messages to first love. The messages are submitted anonymously by people around the world. The content of the submissions is broad and includes almost every emotion. I started the Unsent project in 2015 to find out what color people see love in. To investigate this, submissions are displayed in the color that the submitter associates with their first love.

After the Beep is a collection of sent voicemails. They’re the voicemails that people can’t bring themselves to delete from their phones. Similar to The Unsent Project, After the Beep explores the connection between color and emotion. I do this by asking the sender what color comes to mind when checking their voicemail.

2. What inspired you to start the projects?

The Unsent Project grew out of a place of processing my own experience with my first love. I wanted to network with other people and learn about their experiences. I honestly had no idea it was a concept that would resonate with so many people. It felt wonderful to give other people a place to express themselves anonymously.

After the beep was inspired by a 10 minute voicemail, one of my friends left this guy she was in love with. I started thinking that voicemails are something that almost everyone saves on their phone. I began to wonder what those voicemails might be saying and what the reasons were for people keeping them on their phones.

3. Where do you get the texts and voicemails for the projects from? How do you edit them?

People register anonymously with the Unsent Project at theunsentproject.com. I receive between 50 and 100 submissions for the project every day. Every single submission lives permanently in the Unsent Project Archive. I read through the archive and select submissions to use for social media and collages. I try to keep an open mind during this process and select submissions with a variety of content. My only reading criterion is that if a submission makes me stop and read it twice, it’s pulled for another use.

After the beep, submissions will be emailed directly to me. All voicemails live on my personal website rorablue.com. I sorted them by color there. I sometimes find listening to voicemails very emotional. There are many nuances in the audio that cannot necessarily be translated through text. I find that I need to limit the number of songs I can listen to at one time because they can be very emotional.

4. Can you explain the associations with feelings and color?

Different colors have always evoked different emotions in me, so I became interested in how other people experience color in relation to feelings. Do we as humans have a collective emotional experience of different colors? I can look at all submitted texts in a specific color and see if the messages have a similar emotional tone. So far I can see them doing it.

5. For your “Handle With Care” project you dealt with sexist comments. How did you choose the media and materials you used to communicate the Comments?

I like to work with unconventional materials, like alphabet soup. One of the reasons I like this is because I feel like it makes the art more accessible to an everyday viewer. At Handle With Care, I was intrigued by the idea of getting involved in the activities I addressed on the show. For example, I hand-embroidered “Why are you upset? Is it that time of the month again?” on a pair of red underwear. I found there was something dynamic about sewing, an activity traditionally considered women’s work, as a medium to convey this concept.

6. How has social media influenced your work?

I had a unique relationship with social media. My career as an artist began when I was 19 after starting the Unsent Project as a text post on Tumblr. I woke up one morning with 20,000 submissions in my inbox. I got thrown in a bit while still trying to find my voice not just as an artist but as a person. I would say that for the first year or two my work was closely intertwined with social media. Today I see social media as a wonderful tool for socializing, but my work is less dependent on it. I have learned that there are certain physical and tangible aspects of my work that cannot always be translated through a screen.

7. How did your audience react to your work? Although everything is anonymous, there are very personal aspects.

That answer depends on what series we’re talking about, but overall I can say that my work sparks conversation. People usually have a strong emotional reaction to the Unsent Project. I’ve seen these reactions range from laughter to tears to excitement. Many of the submissions are deeply personal and I think that’s why the project is getting a strong response. It’s not common for people to be completely vulnerable, especially with total strangers. I think anonymity is key here. I doubt people would be willing to share such intimate parts of themselves if the project wasn’t anonymous.

8. Do you find your art empowering?

For me personally, my art is definitely empowering. I feel my strongest when I’m able to transform a feeling into something tangible and beautiful, and that’s what art does for me. Some people have also said they feel empowered by my art. This is usually in the context of being able to share something they’ve had inside them for years. My goal is to let other people feel something through the external experience of my work. I’m not trying to dictate what that feeling is, I just want them to feel it. When that feeling ends up being empowering, that’s just wonderful!

9. Do you have a preference for how your work is viewed? So in multiples, on social media or framed in an exhibition? What are the considerations?

Everyone has a time and a place. What’s interesting is how different the reaction is depending on what format the unsent project is shown in. I think there’s something special about the idea of someone reading posts from unsent projects on their phone late at night. In a way, I think people are able to have a more intimate experience with the Unsent Project by reading the news alone. I find showing my work in a gallery or museum context is just as powerful in another way. I print submissions and create large format collages organized by color. In this context, you can experience hundreds of submissions at once. Something can be experienced here that cannot be translated through a screen.

I especially enjoy the physical work because I can see how people react to the submissions. I can’t see that when people see my art online.

10. Are you currently adding to your projects? Will they continue?

After the Beep and the Unsent Project are both ongoing projects. Both are complex works that will take me years and years to fully process. I’m currently working on a subscription for the Unsent project that includes monthly stickers and a handwritten letter. I’m excited about this because it allows people to be part of the Unsent project and allows me to connect with them on a more personal level. You can contribute on rorablue.com and theunsentproject.com!

Are deleted messages gone forever?

“When the messages are deleted, they are not really erased at once, but the space where they are stored is marked as free to restore new data,” Scott explains.

Delete or turn off your message history

If you act quickly, you might be able to save that important message you threw in the virtual trash.

accidents happen

In a moment of panic you realize you have done the unthinkable. You deleted all text messages on your phone. Or at least the ones that mattered most to you. Some texts should be deleted immediately. But they weren’t. So what are you doing? how to fix this And is your Android even capable of helping you retrieve it? Read on to find out.

react fast

“If you accidentally accidentally deleted text messages, don’t fret!” says Kenny Trinh, Editor-in-Chief of Netbooknews. “You can get lost SMS (Short Message Service) back with a 99 percent chance of success, but there’s one key ingredient: time!” If you’ve deleted text messages on your Android, you need to act quickly to recover them, according to Trinh. “The messages are only recoverable until the part of the storage where they are stored is rewritten. So the longer you wait, the higher the chance that new text messages, app updates, or who-knows-what will be saved in the same place and deleted forever.” Find out 11 things well-organized people do on their smartphones .

Stop texting

It’s important to stop sending text messages as soon as you realize you’ve deleted some from your Android phone — at least if you have any hope of recovering those messages, says Ada Scott, who works for EaseUS Software, a company that does offers data recovery software for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. “When the messages are deleted, they’re not actually deleted immediately, but the space they’re stored in is marked as free to recover new data,” explains Scott. “Messages can be recovered as long as they are not overwritten.” Note that receiving new messages may also force the deletion of the text messages you’re trying to save. So, put your phone on Airplane mode immediately after realizing that important messages have been deleted. Find out the hidden smartphone codes you should use.

Just start

“As with all tech-related things, sometimes it can be a bit tricky to recover all deleted data as data can get permanently deleted,” Jennifer Willy, Editor at Etia.com. That’s why she suggests starting with the least hassle method: reach out to the person whose text messages you lost to see if they can resend them to you. Of course, that only works if you’ve just lost a text chain or two — and if you’re not embarrassed to admit you have a reason to hold on to those texts, or worse, you’ve done one of the things you did should never do over text.

Google backup

via android

Data recovery software

If your friend can’t help or you don’t want to ask, there are some other ways to retrieve deleted text messages. “If you followed all the steps to set up your Android device, chances are you’ve configured it to back up to Google Drive,” says Phil Strazzulla, CEO and founder of Select Software Reviews. “If so, all you have to do is restore your text messages from the backup.” Of course, this only works if you’ve set up regular backups – a backup from two years ago probably won’t help you much here. But if you’re backing up every week or more (like you should), you might be in luck! While you’re at it, that’s how often you need to back up your computer

If you don’t have a backup, your next step is to try data recovery. “There are a few different data recovery tools to help you with this part of the process,” says Trinh. Data recovery can be especially handy when you factory reset an Android device.

When it comes to retrieving deleted text messages from an Android, the steps may be slightly different depending on the product you use, but the general steps (and those required to use EaseUS recovery software) are as follows:

Download and install the program (one option is EaseUS Free Android Data Recovery Software). Launch the program on your computer. Enable USB debugging on your Android. To do this, you must have access to the “Developer Options” in your main settings “Menu. If you don’t do this, just go to “About phone”, scroll down to “Build number” and tap repeatedly. You now get access to “Developer options” in the main Settings” (directly above). “About phone”). Go to “Developer Options”, scroll down to “USB Debugging” (or “Android Debugging”, depending on your ROM) and check the box. Connect your Android to Your computer (with recovery program installed and program running) with a USB cable. Scan the Android device to find deleted text messages. In this step, EaseUS MobiSaver for Android can connect ellen and scan your device to find and analyze all the data. After scanning, the software can classify the found data into different categories, for example contacts or messages, preview and export the deleted text messages. You can click “Messaging” to view the detailed content on the right side. Then select the messages you want to retrieve and click “Recover” button to recover them. Here the software will ask you to specify a folder to save the recovered files on your computer.

Try the free version first

You may get lucky and find what you need with the small amount of free recovery. If not, you will need to purchase the full software program. It’s always worth trying, Scott says, since it could potentially save you money. However, Scott reminds users that it is incredibly important not to install the app or software on the same storage disk where your lost files were previously stored. “There is a risk that the installation will overwrite the lost data, then nothing can be restored.” Make sure you research the best Android cloud storage available.

utilities

In addition to EaseUS, Sarah Petrova, a software engineer at Intel and co-founder of Techtestreport, suggests trying the following:

“It’s up to you which of the three programs you use,” says Petrova. “Unfortunately, the trial version of all three only shows you what data (including SMS & Whatsapp messages) can be recovered, but for the actual recovery you need the full version.” Of course, these full versions cost money. Find out 13 Android hacks you never knew about.

Don’t let it happen again

“To avoid making a habit of restoring, I recommend backing up your SMS messages regularly,” says Petrova. “The easiest way to do this is with the free Android app G Cloud Backup. This app has a regular automatic backup that does the manual work for you, so you only have to open it yourself if you want to access an older version of your saved text messages. How do you make sure messages are permanently deleted?

Here’s how: Long-press the message thread you’d like to remove. It will highlight with a checkmark. Tap on the trash can icon at the bottom and confirm.

Delete or turn off your message history

If you keep the same phone for a while, you might notice that your messaging app becomes slower or takes a long time to load.

Deleting your messages on Android is not difficult, but it may be unclear how to delete all messages on your phone at once without factory resetting the device. We’ll cover each method below, from deleting threads to deleting entire message libraries on Android.

These methods may differ depending on the make and model of your phone as well as the version of the software you are running. Unlike iPhones, Android texting apps vary. Although instructions vary slightly for each application, we’ll cover a few different apps.

After all, let’s start.

The Android messaging app

The Android messaging app is commonly found on LG and Motorola smartphones. If you use this app, follow these instructions. If you want to use this app, just download it here.

Delete individual messages

We’ll start with the smallest and simplest method of deleting texts – deleting individual messages from a thread.

Start by opening the message thread that contains texts you want to delete. Scroll through the message until you find the text you want to delete, whether it’s a sent or received message.

Now tap and hold your finger on the text you want to delete and the message will be highlighted by itself. An action bar will appear at the top of the screen, and tapping the trash can icon in the top-right corner of your screen will delete the message.

Unfortunately, Android Messages doesn’t allow multiple messages to be deleted at once in this way. Instead, you have to long-press a message, then tap the other messages and click the trash can icon.

Delete messaging threads

Of course, when it comes to deleting entire conversations, deleting messages one by one would take hours if not longer depending on how many texts are on your phone.

Deleting old, unused threads is a good middle ground between deleting every message on your phone and deleting nothing.

It helps to keep your SMS app clean and free from unimportant threads while keeping the messages you received from close friends or family members.

To delete a thread, press and hold the thread you want to delete in the message main menu. A checkmark will appear over the photo icon for your SMS thread and another action bar will appear at the top of the screen.

Next, tap on the trash can icon and confirm by tapping on “Delete”.

Unlike individual messages, Android Messages allows multiple threads to be selected, which can be both deleted and archived. Once you’ve tapped and held on a single thread as above, just tap other threads – no need to hold – to delete them as well. The same tick marks the additional thread and you can delete or archive your threads.

Textra

If you’re trying to delete all messages on your phone, it may be too much work for some users even to select and delete message threads one by one depending on how many messages fill up their phone.

Textra is a messaging app that you can download on any Android device. When you download the app, just set it to be your default messaging app. All your current texts are automatically adopted. We like this app because it gives us a little more freedom in deleting messages than others on our list.

Note: Any messages you delete from Textra will also be removed from your phone’s default messaging app.

In appearance, Textra has almost the same layout and design as Android Messages, with two main advantages: full and complete customization, and additional options and settings not offered through the Android Messages app.

Automatically delete messages in Textra

So once you’ve installed Textra via the Google Play Store, launch the app, let it finish the optimization and dive into the settings by clicking the triple dot menu button in the top right corner of your display.

After opening the settings menu, scroll all the way down the options and find the “More Stuff” category. Here we find the easiest way to delete your text messages.

Select “Messages to keep” at the top of the list and you’ll get a pop-up notification that lets you customize how many messages are shown per conversation.

From here you can set your text and media message limits to the lowest applicable numbers: 25 and 2 respectively. This will delete all but the last 25 text messages per conversation and all but the last 2 media messages per conversation, reducing the number of on Limit incoming messages to your phone and keep your conversations private. Once you’ve selected the numbers you want, you can tap “Okay” to close the menu and your phone will do the rest.

Samsung News

If you have a Samsung device, you are most likely using Samsung’s default messaging app. If that’s the case, this section is for you.

Delete individual texts

Open your SMS app and find the text you want to delete. Then long press on the message.

A pop-up window will appear. Click Delete. Then confirm.

Unlike the other messaging apps listed above, you can’t tap on other messages within the thread to delete multiple ones. However, you can easily delete entire threads.

Delete a message thread

frequently asked Questions

How can I be sure that all messages will be permanently deleted?

With today’s technology, it can be difficult to be sure that all traces of your text messages are completely gone. Of course, if your carrier has them stored on their servers, there’s nothing you can do about it.

However, you can make sure that no traces are left on your phone. You need to search for cloud services that you have on your phone. If you have something like the Samsung Cloud setup, chances are your messages are stored on external servers (even if you can’t see them on your phone).

Look for an option to delete backups. Scroll through and delete any current (or older) backups depending on the timing of the messages you want to permanently delete.

Can I Recover Deleted Text Messages?

In most cases yes. However, it is best not to delete texts that you will need later.

Your first best option is to check your cloud service for the lyrics. If you use Textra, they may be saved in a backup. If you’re using a Samsung or LG, your phone has a native backup service. Just go to the phone’s settings and look for the “Sync & Backup” option (often found under “Accounts”).

Try to restore your last backup to recover your deleted texts.

How to permanently delete a MeetMe account for a deceased loved one

If you recently lost a loved one and want to delete their MeetMe account, then follow the steps below. From there, follow our post-loss checklist for next steps when it comes to managing your loved one’s digital legacy.

Step 1: Try to access the account from the app or online

Deleting a MeetMe Account: Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions about deactivating a MeetMe account? See below if we address your concerns.

Can you delete a MeetMe account without an email address?

It is common for people to have several different email addresses. Having multiple email addresses certainly makes deleting a MeetMe account difficult. If you don’t know the email account to open the account, contact MeetMe Customer Support at 215-862-7832 or [email protected].

Does MeetMe delete inactive accounts?

According to MeetMe’s terms of service, the company can “terminate accounts that have been inactive for an extended period of time.” Please note that no specific time limits are given, so we are not sure if the account will be deleted after a few months or a few years.

What happens when you delete a MeetMe account?

While the terms of service aren’t clear, it seems like deleting an account and removing content you’ve posted should be done in two separate steps. Deleting an account means that your email address and password are no longer active. If you would like the content you posted during any part of MeetMe to be removed, you must send an email to [email protected].

Please note that deactivating an account and asking to remove the content does not remove the app from your phone. Conversely, it’s worth noting that removing the app from your phone doesn’t delete the account.

Steps in end-of-life planning

Many think that end-of-life planning is all about choosing a headstone design and choosing the music for your funeral. There are other steps you can take to make the death of your loved ones easier.

Consider closing underused accounts or accounts that may contain embarrassing content. When you are nearing the end of your life, you may not want your loved ones to know about your dating life. Deleting such accounts (and related content) can prevent your friends and family from learning uncomfortable information about you.
