I particularly enjoy photos of antique slot machines in my copy of Slot Machines: A Picture History of the First 100 Years by Marshall Fey, grandson of “the father of slot machines” Charles Fey.

It appears to be missing its slot lever, perhaps due to damage, or it never had a lever. An older coin-operated slot machine is clearly marked as “Liberty Bell”. It rests on cast feet located at each corner. The reel symbols show three Liberty Bells, but the “Paytable” shows suits – no fruits or bars.

The International Arcade Museum website shows a single slot machine. It is a very old style slot that features the Liberty Bell symbol on its face alongside three reels featuring Liberty Bell, Bar and Fruit Spool symbols.

This is probably a Charles Fey Liberty Bell but must be a slightly later version as it has obvious fruit and cane reel symbols. It also has a cast metal-like case and the distinctive “feet” of a Liberty Bell. It also has a small compartment for coins, suggesting that there are automatic payouts.

Like many website owners, I occasionally look at the data people are looking for when they find my website. A high-level question that I don’t think I’ve ever addressed is a simple one: is it better to play slots or move?

STATUS: Ultimately, it’s your decision – no damage, no foul or anything.

This is one of those things that tends to get bogged down in beliefs around slot machines that may encourage people to do a thing or another, but ultimately it doesn’t matter. For example, some players will say to move on from a “cold” slot or stick with a “hot” slot when it pays out. (They might say the same thing but call them loose or tight.)

Ultimately, however, all of these definitions relate to what a slot machine has done and not what a slot machine will do. The outcome of the next spin is not determined by what came before it, thanks to the Random Number Generator (RNG). So whether you stick with a machine or really keep going will depend more on what makes you feel good or not.

Gambling is an emotional ride in itself, so if you’re feeling down and want to move on because a game isn’t paying or stick with it because you’re having fun, that’s really your choice. Conversely, that means you don’t have to get up from a machine that just paid well because it might get paid well again.

The only exception to this is if you keep playing a machine and dump more money into it because it hasn’t paid out and is therefore ‘due’. Tommy Glenn Carmichael is one of the most notorious slot cheats in gambling history. He is in charge of the Light Wand.

Magicians like David Copperfield, Dynamo, and David Blaine may have the ability to create the illusion that something is happening, but Carmichael used his light wand to make jackpot wins magically appear out of nowhere.

The light wand would effectively blind the optical sensor on slot machines so it couldn’t tell how many coins were deposited into the machine, meaning it wouldn’t know when to withdraw or how much.

This meant Carmichael could rig a slot machine to his advantage, turning small wins into massive payouts.

7. Piano Wire

This is an oldie but a tidbit in the world of slots cheats.

A group of men worked together at Caesars Boardwalk Regency Casino in Atlantic City in 1982. A man opened up the target slot machine and attached 20-inch lengths of piano wire to the whirring guts of the game.

The wires could then be used to block the clock that measured wheel spins, allowing the group to manipulate the spins.

They hit the $50,000 jackpot but unfortunately their entire scam was filmed and the winning player was arrested before leaving the premises.

8. Top-Bottom Connection

This is one of the most sophisticated methods of cheating on slot machines and was popular with cheats in the 1970s and 1980s.

They used a special tool that was divided into two parts. A top (a metal rod with the end bent in the shape of a “q”) and a bottom (a long wire).

By passing the bottom through the coin chute and the top through the coin slot, the scammers were able to lock up the machine and force the game to release any coins stored in it.

It’s that man Carmichael again. He was an absolute genius when it came to cheating.

He was the creator of the “Monkey’s Paw”. After testing new methods on a video poker machine, he finally built the right contraption. It was amazingly easy.

He took a guitar string and attached it to a bent metal rod. He slipped it into the machine’s vent and shook it around until he flipped the coin hopper release switch.

Cue the avalanche of coins.

A simple but very effective slots cheat.

This is a small device that is wrapped around a bill to fool the slot machine into accepting a $100 bill when in reality it only accepts a modest $1 bill.

11. Replacement of computer chips

Dennis Nikrasch changed the game of cheating on slot machines with this idea.

He bought a slot machine and fiddled with it in his garage trying to figure out what was wrong.

He found that the computer chips in the machines could be reprogrammed to be manipulated to pay out jackpots on tap.

Nikrasch ordered a batch of these chips, hired a team of scammers, acquired a wad of slot machine keys, and began a fraud reign that bled casinos dry for years.

And he did it all by simply swapping the independent chips for his manipulated chips.

And with nearly 10 percent of the total votes, the world’s most popular number, according to Bellos’ poll, is…seven.

Shocked? Probably not. It turns out that the triumph of the seven only confirms a human fascination that stretches back thousands of years. Bellos points out that ancient Babylonian tablets were riddled with sevens, an observation that future historians might make about us by looking at footage of our Las Vegas slot machines and craps tables. “Seven is the only number we can count on our hands (1-10) that cannot be divided or multiplied within the group,” explains Bellos.
